I have 'all or nothing' approach: I either BT $1 less than 90% of CL on all my cards that offer 0% APR (which brings utilization to almost 50%) or pay them all down to 0 to get highest limits during a new round of applications and CL increase requests. I don't mind hard pulls for CLI since I'm getting a bunch from new apps anyway... |

Twould be interesting - although nearly impossible - to do a study on tactics in maxxing out CLs and FICOs. However I think all of us and our histories make it impossible - not to mention the opaque nature of the credit analysis folks.
For various reasons though I can't usually go to a 'nothing' before I startup again - and so far it hasn't seemed like a big deal. Right now I have 4 at essentially 100% of CL and 2 of the wife's at 100%. A lot of my recent 0% deals have been existing account/CL realignment rather than new CCs. However if Bofa/MBNA and chase get less generous I might have to sell a SB or two.
Hard pulls don't scare me either - most of mine are 9-15 month 0%s and inquiries come and go. |

Re: 10000 bonus signup miles
You can actually redeem them for a flight within your region, or for $50 statement credit or $75 gift card from B&N and many other stores. You can later convert the card into Gas, Restaurant, or whatever else you want, and the 0% for life offer should remain available. |

Hey EugeneV,
Thanks for the updated phone numbers and offer codes. Got myself one of those 0% BT for life, although with 2 $3 minimum purchases. Something else learned - BT over 20k take 72 hours to approve at Discover, so 20k seems to be a magic number with them. The CSR was very nice, which is not usual, in my experience. Thanks again!

I just received an invitation by mail for the Discover Plat Sea Life. I'm assuming the code for this is one of MFXC and SCV3 for 5% Get More. 0% APR for life, two monthly purchases but no minimum is specified. |

I just applied for the gas card, the rep had these answers to my questions: 2 purchases per month required beginning in April but no minimum purchase for 0% for life. 5% back for first $1500 gas purchase per year, 3% for the next $1500 and 1% after that. 3% fee per BT min $5/max $29. They will do a balance transfer check which you can write to yourself and deposit. BT must be done by Jan 1 2006. Phone number to check status is 800-347-2683. |

I'm going to apply for this card.
I'd like to use it to pay off my auto loan (6% int, + having to have extra insurance on a financed car). My auto loan has no early payment penalty.
Do they give you a "blank check" to do a BT with? I'd probably write it out to myself and then do an electronic payment to pay off my auto loan. |

Hi EugeneV,
I got my Discover Miles card, but no insert detailing the terms of offer. Would you be so kind as to provide a copy of the offer (scanned/pdf/etc) so I can have the terms and conditions? They gave me $100 less CL then they originally promised. But I'm not complaining.
Also, what's the minimum purchase for the miles to be credited to the account?

I thought that the code would be enough and did not save the insert, alas. It did not specify minimum purchase amount. How did you know the credit line? Did they approve your app over the phone and told you the CL right away? |

Just got off the phone with a Discover CSR.
She indicated all the BT's had to be completed by the April 2006 date. After that the BT's continued at 0% as long as you make the well document 2 charges/mo. But any BT's beyond the April 2006 window wouldn't be subject to the 0% deal. This was something that wasn't clear to me. |

New offer via mail: 0% BT for life, BUT with $75 max transfer fee and THREE transactions pre month.
Just found this thread last week, and was intrigued by this offer. Then yesterday, I received an offer from Discover in the mail (actually got it twice, addressed to variations of my name.) At first, I was glad to have to the great "0% for life" offered directly to me. But then I read the details and saw that my offer requires THREE purchases/month to maintain the the 0% BT rate, plus has a max BT fee of $75 (instead of $29). So I think I will be calling for OP's deal instead.
I wonder if three purchases is going to be standard from now on. Also, anyone know how accurate "Initial Credit up to XXXXX" is on credit apps like this? Is your credit line likely to equal that number? Just curious...
Details of this offer (FWIW) 0% APR until June 06, then 9.99 0% on balance transfers until June '06. You may extend the application of the special rate if you make three purchase/cash advance transactions each billing period thereafter. Balance transfer Fee: 3%, minimum $10, maximum $75 Sign up for Get More program to get 5% CashBack bonus from select merchants or in certain merchant categories. Cash rewards on all purchases with no earnings cap first $1500 earns 0.25%, second $1500 in purchases earns 0.50%. After $3000, earn a full 1% CashBack $20 CashBack bonus on first purchase. |

I applied on the phone and am awaiting approval. Can anyone describe how to actually make a balance transfer if I am approved? Do I just call up a CSR and say "hey I want to transfer $x into ING, here's the routing #?" |

I just called 1-800-767-8466 on OP's original post with the Source Code FKVP and the max transfer fee is $29. To continue the 0% on your transferred balance, you need to make 2 purchases per month with $1 each min.
I am going to do this with my car loan then! This sounds like a good deal.
BTW on the topic of credit score VS. maxing out your CC -- it does affect it. I know cuz I have a $37K limit CC. They offered me a 0% balance transfer for 9 months. So I cash it out and let it sit in ING for 9 months to make some bucks. I affects my credit score. I does come back once you pay it off though. It's really no big deal as long as you are not buying a house or applying for a loan.
Thanks OP!

I was approved immediately on the phone, but credit line is only $4000. That seems odd to me since wouldn't that mean I wasn't approved on my application (the card has a $5000 minimum credit line) and that they then approved me on a lesser card? Their website application form says : "You agree that if your application for a Discover Card with a minimum credit limit of $5000 and the lower APRs shown above is not approved, your application will also constitute your request for a Discover Card with the higher APRs shown above, a lower credit limit and different insurance coverage." The person on the phone mentioned this also during application, but didn't say anything about it when they said I was approved. I only know the credit line because I asked just before hanging up. Guess I'll see when I get the card. |

I called Wednesday night used code FKVR (FFmiles version; not planning on using this card for anything but BT, so the purchase discounts don't interest me.) Got instant approval on the phone for $8000, which is good, but I need $20k to transfer my entire auto loan (and, of course, I'd like it to be higher so my card isn't maxed out). Any tips for getting a CL line increase on this? Thanks in advance |

I did get approved on the phone and told my CL - I requested much larger BT than I was approved for, and had to take a CL decrease in my existing discover line, but still, that's over 10k increase in total CL with discover.
If anyone has that insert for Miles card, I'd appreciate it.
