Thanks for explaining. So you don't consider a bank negotiating a car deal is a bank 'product' or service? I've not yet used it, but it is only one of many services that USAA has offered me over the years. I've had hours of financial planning service for free from USAA, so this fits right in. -Zer (who does not consider this to be a non-bank product, as the bank does the negotiating/financing, etc.) DaveHanson said: Zer92780, I negged your car post not because it isn't useful information--it is--but because OP is trying to keep this thread on the specified topic of USAA BANK products.
Why not start (or contribute to) a new thread devoted to USAA's non-bank products? I envision one for benefits available to "full" military eligible members, and one for non-eligible members. EDIT: Since reading about USAA on FWF, I've discovered that I'm not quite getting all the "full" benefits (such as the USAA SSavingsAcct dividends/membership that is not available to military dependents, except to widows of officers/NCOs). I do have auto insurance at a very good rate and bank accts and several annuities with USAA Insurance (a separate division from USAA banking). There may be more than two categories of membership at USAA. Perhaps it's time to alert USAA to this USAA discussion thread at FWFinance and to ask for clarification from the org itself? |

What is USAA's policy on deposits made at other bank's ATMs? If they support this, when does this type of deposit become available?
I ask this question because I don't want to open an account with them only to find out that my current method of transferring funds (ATM Deposit>PSECU>PayPal Pull>Paypal Push>Presidential) is faster.

Unless the USAA policy has changed in the past year, I think you can do a credit card cash advance, up to $500 per credit card, into you checking or savings account at any time, not just for initial funding. |

Interesting, will that be considered as "purchase" as some FWers posted above? |

USAA Credit Card Rates
Depending on creit scores the rate will fall between 7%-19%. There is no military affilation need for these rates.
Rewards options on your USAA credit card is for military only... but rates and terms are the same... |

After I got my USAA number from phone, I login and try to open a checking account. But I met this problem:
-------------------------------------- You must call USAA
We do not currently have enough security information to grant you access to this portion of the site.
You must contact us to establish usaa.com access. --------------------------------------
Do I have to call them again to open an account?

You need to open the accounts by phone, unless you have a differnt product with them. |

I can confirm from my PenFed cc statement that my INITIAL deposit of $500 to checking and savings earned $12.50, although I believe deposits after that will be handled as cash advance. |

In response to a few previous posts: USAA does not use Chexsystems. You can not make deposits at non-USAA affiliated ATMs, although you can make withdrawals. I've been a full member(former commissioned officer) since 1969, so would happy to answer questions with which I'm familiar. |

I added another section to the original post, "Other Information," where we can put any miscellaneous information that potential customers may need to know. |

I lost a lot buying USAA mutual funds, back before USAA started hiring professional fund mgmt co's. My worst loss was short-term bonds, in which my principal evaporated faster than I could add more to equalize things. I had no idea anyone could lose principal on BONDS, but you can if they are churned enough. Got out, took my losses, will never hand my money over to a mut.fund again. Found out I have zero tolerance for losing money when I pay someone to manage it. Funny, but I have pretty good tolerance for losing money on my own, but NONE at all for losing when I am paying a manager.
David Swensen, major fund manager for Yale, has just published a book indicating that small investors cannot win with funds that charge a fee and have to make a profit, sometimes at a high cost to those to whom they owe a fiduciary duty. Google's full of stuff like this: Swensen's outrage at mutual funds comes through on every page of "Unconventional Success." My vote? Savings bonds, i-bonds at 4.80%. -Zer sbsake said: Does anybody have usaa mutual funds experience ? I was speaking with one of the reps today about mutuals funds vs capitalone savings. |

Oh, I think this pertains to the tiered membership stuff, about who is eligible for what benefit, like auto insurance or the USAA SSAcct that pays dividends to elite members (which I'm not). I thought we might get a clear stmt from the horse's mouth at USAA about this tiered membership. It sure is not spelled out plain, and the CSRep I called and talked to had to be pinned down before she would 'fess up to knowing anything about any SSAcct. When I said tiered membership, she said OH, NO, IT'S NOT TIERED, but I don't know what else you call it. SSAcct appears to be a benefit for USAA employees and for military officers/NCOs (and their widows). I'm glad I found out about this, after decades of being a member and not realizing that there is stuff I've never heard about. That's just another benefit of reading posts here at FWF. Got an answer to a question I never thought to ask about! -Zer zry said: Zer92780 said: Perhaps it's time to alert USAA to this USAA discussion thread at FWFinance
