I got these flyers from Gerber Life Insurance offering 6-month $2500 life insurance for my baby. It is a whole life policy which I have no intention and no obiligation of continuing.
The form only ask about basic information like names and birth dates, etc. Is it worth getting the free policy? What am I going to lose? Will I get flooded with phone calls and mails asking me to supply more information or add this and that?

My guess is that you would find that the value of such a policy - given the life exectancy of a healthy infant, and the rather unimportant $2500 in the event of a infant's death - that the policy is worth exactly what they're charging you.
And yes I think you will get deluged with offers to continue - and offers to sign up for similar things.
These sleazy flyers always made me steer away from gerber baby food.

Well, this can be a touchy subject. Perfectly healthy babies die of crib death, SIDS, accidents and other things. Unfortunately, my little brother was killed at 3 months of age at the babysitter's. So, if it's free and easy, then why not? If it's a pain, then there are very inexpensive options [if you're interested in such coverage].

solonsaxon, my genuine condolences, even if this was long ago.
desperatehousemom, I think you realize correctly that this policy's actual value -- $2500 times the probability of your baby dying in the next 6 months -- is very small. If you are COMPLETELY sure you will not, under any circumstances, ever pay any money for this awful kind of insurance, go ahead and take it, if it's worth more to you than a stamp and a few minutes of your time. It's probably worth being put on Gerber Life's mailing list, even -- as long as you know you have the willpower to resist this extraordinarily stupid investment.
Gerber life prey's on new mothers and grandparents.
If you have term life insurance you can add a rider to your current policy for about $5 a month and get $5,000 of term insurance.
If it's free, then why not?

I get a term life policy for all my family members thru payroll deduction. Some people have a strong aversion to term life for their kids, but it costs me a whopping $0.24 biweekly. Its not to make money from the death, but to cover all of the unpleasant costs associated with it.

24 cents biweekly , on term coverage, is very different from the $5-20 per MONTH charges on these childrens whole life garbage policies.

Gerber life insurance is absolute crap. I also know a young couple who maintain this for their two young children but don't bother covering them with health insurance. Grrrr. Pure genius...

Just wanted to say 'thanks to all' for your kind words. My situation did occur a long time ago but as many of you probably [and unfortunately] know, the loss will be felt the rest of my life. Wouldn't normally post this, but such thoughts can't go without being recognized.
