I lost my wallet and somebody stole it! I paid for my lunch at the student diner and after I ate, I noticed it wasn't in my pocket, I went back and searched through the lost and found, and had the custodians look for it. It was gone and stolen! I had my Student ID, my credit card, as well as my HMO card, and driver's license in it! I immediately went to my school's police department to file a report. I also immediately closed my CC account of the card I lost on my wallet (fortunately there wasn't any unauthorized charge on it). I also made a fraud-alert on Equifax for anyone using my SSN. The DMV though is closed and Im not able to do anything until tommorow... I lost about 100 bucks in cash in my wallet! But what Im more concerned about it identity theft! Im not sure if someone can use my Driver's License to fake my ID or something, but I tried all the steps the police told me... After all this, is there anything else I should do? Anyway to prevent future wallet-theft?

You should be fine unless you were using a stolen ID yourself in the first place.
You shouldn't have "closed" the CC account - just ask CC to reissuee you a card with a new number. I've lost a couple of credit cards before, and they simply sent me a new card. Plus I would usually get a statement from them later detailing charges posting on or after the reported date, and to inform them if any of those were not authorized.
I see so many students carry pretty much every single card they have in their wallets - perhaps limit your future wallet contents to stuff you need to use on a regular basis?

I don't think you have much to worry about. There isn't much one can do with a driver's license other than use it to buy some booze.

Why would you put a fraud alert for anyone using your SSN? Was your SS card in there as well or on your HMO card? Relax you will be fine and chalk it up to experience. Get a new card reissued and go get a new drivers license and student ID. Not really too much else they can do with your items.

Im not sure if my HMO card has my SSN on it or not.... If so, what should I do? I reported to Equifax already... Is there any other damage this guy can do, if he has my SSN?

Why report only to equifax? Why not the other beareaus? I would go ahead and issue fraud alert to all 4 beareaus (I forget the name of the 4th new beareau.. can someone post?)

I was recently in your position. If you want to place a fraud alert on your credit report then you actually have to place it at all three agencies individually. So call the other two also. Be advised that the fraud alert makes it harder for you to obtain credit and can be an inconvenience.
You can also join privacy guard, privacy guard trial offer and monitor your credit for a few months. Then make sure you check your credit reports again in about 6 months to a year.

Will this fraud alert be on forever? Also what other types of preventions should I look in, other than credit?

Are you sure, my SSN is not on my insurance card. I have blue shield, maybe it's different for different insurance companies.

Chances are it's not on there. There are laws in a number of states that prevent HMOs and other business from displaying your SSN on ID cards or other places.
Read here: http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs10-ssn.htm In California, a new law restricts how certain businesses can display their customers' Social Security numbers. It does not restrict the collection of SSNs, however, and it does not affect government agencies. California Civil Code 1798.85 is being phased in from 2003 to 2005. Insurance companies will not be able to print the SSN on identification cards to be carried in the wallet. Customers of banks and investment companies cannot be required to transmit the SSN over the Internet when conducting business online, unless the number is encrypted. SSNs cannot be printed on documents sent through the mail, with some exceptions. The California Office of Privacy Protection provides a guide for businesses on "recommended practices" for using SSNs. It includes a description of the new law, www.privacy.ca.gov/recommendations/ssnrecommendations.pdf. The full text of the law is found on the state's official legislative web site, www.leginfo.ca.gov

Did you lose it recently? If so then, report to the 3 credit bureaus. If it has been a long time, then don't worry about it. If something happened then it would have happened shortly after you lose your SS number. Also, a crook can't do anything with just SS number, they need name, SS number, address, and phone number to open a new CC account.

CC is not the only damage the thief can do. For example, the thief can open a cell phone account with just your SS for credit check. You won't see this fraudulent entry in your credit report until the cell phone company send the debt to a collection agency which can be several years later.

This is where privacy guard comes in, the credit checks show up there. They also email you when anyone pulls your credit.

Not to scare the OP, but just finished an article in Kiplingers about same situation. Thief that had Driver's license used it when they were pulled over. The correct person ended up with a warrant out on him because he was supposedly driving with a suspended license. He spent a couple days in county jail before they determined he wasn't the thief that was originally pulled over.

Remember he said county jail. Now we are talking sherrifs department.
I did the same thing a couple months ago. Here is a site with some useful information. don't forget to cancel store specific credit cards (Kohls was the fastest to send me a new card). Regarding the credit agencies, Experian has an online system here . You have the option of filing a 90 day or 7 year alert. They send your info to the other 2 agencies automatically (I received confirmation a couple weeks later from all 3). Good luck and its not as bad as you initially think. Replacing my driver's license was probably the most painful. I hate the DMV
How many states still use SSN as your driver's license number? I'm in Massachusetts, and my license uses my SSN. I should really get it changed..

It shouldn't be. HIPPA regulations should've had your SSN removed from the card. Blue Cross should've issued you a new one without your SSN on it.
the new cards were supposed to be issued sometime at the beginning of this year, but i still see ALOT of people use the ones with ssn on it--they either don't remember seeing a new card in the mail, or they haven't gotten around to putting it in their wallets. in fact, most people don't know about hippa law regarding id numbers. if you are a student under your parent's plan, it's their ssn on it. just double check with them to see if you had and old or new card. good luck to you.
Before you freak out any more, take comfort in the fact that common thieves on average have below average intelligence. Many of them will simply remove the cash and dump the wallet in the trash bin. People I know who've lost their wallets never had anything bad happen to them.
