Why is the assumption page computers?? I didn't order nor have any charges on my AMEX. But why not Staples or some other vendor?
If you ask the 18 people that have had fraudulent charges.. how many have bought from Dell or Staples... |

I would watch who you all start blaming such as Page Computers saying there running fraudulent activities thats just a good way to get sued over libel, I mean I bet most of you have made purchases at tons of the same online stores, lets see where a community of online retailers seasrching for the best deal possible, obviously your all gonna have charges from similar stores.
That being said, my advices..

Count me in as being hit twice. I got charged in July 05 for 8.99 and then in August for 8.99. I saw the first hit immediately but oddly I had just ordered 4 books and thought it could be one of those purchases. It sort of blended right in (contextually) with the surrounding purchases even though I did see it. When I got the second charge I knew it wasn't right. I called AMEX and the guy said he had gotten a lot of calls from people wanting to protest charges from that merchant. He credited me immediately. He tried to find some sort of contact info and said they had nothing on file to reach them via, so I doubt the earlier post saying an AMEX rep said they were legit, is true. That AMEX rep just did not wanna deal with it.
Here is the kicker, I have not ordered from Page Computers. I do order from LOTS of other online stores though with that AMEX blue cash card. If it pops up again I'll ask for a block and/or to change my number.
So is that 19 people hit now with an average of 1.75 charges each? |

Good question.
Whether it's Page Computers or another vendor depends on the sensitivity and specificity pairs.
Sensitivity for Vendor A = # of them who bought from Vendor A/ # of ppl who have fraud charges on AMEX. Specificity for vendor A = # of them who didn't buy from Vendor A / # of ppl who don't have fraud charges on AMEX.
For Page Computers, so far sensitivity is about 15/18, specificity = 100%.
For Staples, sensitivity is also about 15/18, but specificity is much lower (say 30%).
The high specificity is what singles Page Computers out. |

A lot of smaller online stores process credit cards through consolidated centers. It's possible that Page Computers uses a service like this, and that service might have been compromised. |

the most recent incident was in July or June 2005 when CardSystems was breached and upto 5 million AMEX CC #'s were stolen/compromised
ESTOREONLINE probably a fake shell account to funnel the money to who knows where, unless they're stupid enough to use their own address. anybody in/near Rocklin wanna give the local PD a heads up?

My American Express credit card was hit for $15.99 from ESTOREONLINE on 7/31 and 8/30. The first time I thought it might be a card number error and initiated a dispute with American Express. The second time I realized it wasn't Kosher and something was very wrong. I went to estoreonline.com and found a Web site 'comming soon.' Then I called directory assistance but could not get a telephone listing for the merchant. Hum, smells fishy. Then I did a search on Google and found other references to the scam. Since I had bought stuff from Page Computers, I alerted them.
I also called American Express. The later was one BIG pain, as I was put on hold, transfered, put on hold, transfered, put on hold - well you get the picture. Finally, I was told they were aware about ESTOREONLINE and should send them an email about the information I found that implies other persons that purchased from Page Computers had their AMEX card number used by ESTOREONLINE.
I need to say that Page Computers has always been a good merchant as I have bought several expensive products from them without encountering a problem. I hope to hear from them and will post additional information as I receive it. Also, I am writing a book that includes information about false/ errors on credit card bills and welcome any information from other readers. |

Even more of a reason to think of one time use cc#'s as protection against 'fraudulent activity/ disease transmission/etc'. |

Anyone know if there is a way to generate a one-time CC# for an MBNA card?
i've got a Merrill + card, which is MBNA, but I don't see a link to Shop Safe when I log onto NetAccess. Isn't there a program you can download? Anyone have a link? |
