I got my card today. I was asked to provide proof that was a student (I go to a smaller school, maybe why). They needed either 1) a copy of a current semester bill or 2) a copy of a current student ID. I photocopied both and sent it to them. They didn't have a bad turn around time. About a week and a half to get the letter after I applyed for the card, and I got my card about 2 weeks after I sent the proof back to them. If anything thing on Amazon counts as a 5% that'll make me a little mad though, seeing as my Amazon visa from Chase only gives (basicly) 3% at Amazon.

I was thinking about this card for second...isn't it essentially not 5% back? I can't find an item within the Thank You redemptions that equals 100 points = $1...it's more like 120 points = $1 unless you wait for 50,000 points and a $50 gift card. Additionally, what happens if they raise the requirements for redemptions? Those 5 points per dollar, if they don't go up, will continually be worth less and less. Any thoughts on this?

Well, I don't see any gift cards that require 50,000 points for a $50 gift certificate. Instead, you need 5000 points for a $50 gift certificate according to the ThankYou Website. Therefore if you spend $1,000 and earn 5 points/$ you can get 5% back. Additionally, they can change the terms and conditions of the program at anytime but they are not likely to devalue the program significantly without first letting you know. I would love to get this card for the 5 points/$ for dining out and at bookstores but unfortunately I am not a college student and therefore I don't qualify.

Actually, If you use your credit card sensibly - pay at least your minimum payment every month and don't go over your limit - they give you free points (25). So in all reality you are earning more than 5%, plus if you are a college student that does well academically you also get points. I think this card as well as the Dividend Platinum Select card for students from CITI (that card will save you 15% off your travel at STA Travel, which many times offers awesome rates for student-only airfare) should be in every Fatwallet college student's wallet.

Sorry...used wrong numbers, you're right about the 5,000 points. I guess my concern was just that if they changed the amount to, say, 5500 points, that'd change what amount you're essentially getting back.

ANY of the credit cards could change ANY aspect of their reward program at ANY time.

This one is just as safe as any other.

Update on the points based on GPA:

I sent a printed copy of my transcript to the address mentioned in this thread about a few weeks ago. Today, I got a letter and what looks to be the official redemption form. It's titled Citi mtvU Card Redemption Form. It asks for name, address, city, state and zip. Then, account number, exact GPA for the semester, and class year for the semester (freshman, sophomore, etc). Following that, a state reads, "Please attach a copy of your official report card for the semseter. We cannot process your award without this information." Next is school info and finally, print and sign.

The address to send the form is:

Citi mtvU Redemption Center
P.O. Box 142319
Irving, TX 75014-2319

Yeah, I got the same thing too - sorry. I called the CSR center and they took care of it. I guess the person I talked to from CITI the first time did not know what they were talkin about. Sorry for posting poor information.

Does anyone know if the 5 points / dollar spent is valid at music and DVD clubs like BMG and Columbia House? Thanks.

Personally, I decided it's a whole lot of hassle and giving out of personal info for $20 max, but to each his own.

edit: It's still a pretty good card with the unique stuff you get 5% on (movie theaters, bookstores, etc)

I sent in the Redemption form mentioned and a printout of my grades. I got a letter mentioning the 2000 points within a few weeks and they just appeared on my billing statement.

I am graduating soon and I am wondering until when I will be able to use this card. Do current card-holders sends their report card or semester bill every year? or just to open? I do like 5% rebates on restaurants!

I think they said you can use up to 6 months after graduation.

I was told by a CSR that once you get your MTVU card, you can use it essentially forever, whether you are still in school or graduate. I find it sort of hard to believe that Citi would force people to convert or close their student card after they graduate. Does anyone have confirmation of this?

$40 through Cardoffers.com. Don't know of any other promos.

I cannot register now, anyone succeeded?

First, I tried to convert my Citi Visa card, but was unable. The reason: it is a silver card and is not eligible for any conversions.

Next, I tried to convert my Citi Platinum Select MasterCard for College Students, and I was successful. The CSR claimed that it would be the same acct and still have the same history. BUT I would get a new acct number because I was converting from MasterCard to Visa. Hopefully, the acct history does stay, like the CSR said it would.

When converting the card, I was not asked for my univeristy info, but I may have given that info when I applied for the Citi Platinum Select MasterCard for College Students, and Citi may have retained that info.

phitchow, when you get your mtvU card, please tell us whether the "Member Since" year is same as your original card.
If you will have access to your credit report, please update us whether Citi did a hard credit pull for the "conversion", and later whether the mtvU card shows up as newly opened.

Thank you.

I got my card on Saturday.
The "Member Since" year is the same as my original card (2004).
A hard credit pull was not done for the "conversion."
I will update this post when the card shows up on my credit report.

UPDATE: New acct has shown up on TransUnion, but has not yet shown up on Equifax/Experian. The "Date Open" is the same as my original Citi Card (April 2004).
