FatWally said:Tried, didn't qualify. I told them if they couldn't extend the 0% offer, I would pay it off with a 0% BT from another card and close the account. That didn't fly. I guess I don't have the touch...
DO pay it off with another card. Wait for the statement. THEN call retentions. |

Damm&*n citibank. they offered me a 5% CashBack on all purchases. prob is that I had already maxed out the 300. U took it anyways cuz i'll be spending a lot in Jan 06.
I was given an offer of 2% all on purchases along w/ the 5% gas, grocery purchases on another card, about a week ago. |

Whatchoolookinat said:This worked like a charm for me, took less than 5 minutes total, and bumped my 1%/5% to 2%/5%. Will allow my to max out my rewards right around the end of the year now. Big thanks to you OP!Got an additional 1% (on other purchases) for the next 6 months starting 5 business days from today. I still have more than $150 Cash Back to earn before I reach the 2005 limit and a whole $300 next 2006. Thanks OP! |

Auream said:dhl said:src0 said:well, it would effectively end retention offers
Explain how it would end retention offers? Getting 2% on rewards instead of 1% has nothing to do with having debt on the card.
Sure it does, in the aggregate. The only way the CC companies can afford these promotions is because they collect so much interest and fees from people who revolve balances. If everyone suddenly decided to pay off their credit cards, it's highly unlikely they could afford such lucrative rewards. We'd go back to the days of high annual fees and rewards programs that you have to pay to join.
Just thought I'd mention from the Citigroup 3Q2005 Earnings Release (http://www.citigroup.com/citigroup/press/2005/051017a.htm): North America Cards "Revenues and income declined, as a 10% increase in purchase sales was offset by net interest margin compression and higher payment rates." |

I haven't called for the retention offer yet. But in my most recent statement closed on Oct 12, they gave be double Cash Back for the gas category. ie 10% on gas purchase, but still 1% on everything else. Not mentioned anywhere in the statement, but the numbers show that it is true.
I calculate every month so I am pretty sure I didn't make a mistake in calculation. I guess I will wait until this goes away before calling in for retention. |

I would advise against this. In the past I've tried to close cards and was given all sorts of offers to keep the account open. However, the last card I had offered Cash Back. I earned around $100 without ever carrying a balance. When I decided it wasn't the best Cash Back card for me I called to close the account. The CSR closed that account the instant I asked for it to be closed. She didn't even give me a single offer or at least confirm that I really did want to close the account. I felt sad that night and I'm still not sure why :'O( |

air659 said:But don't credit cards also collect fee from merchants when you use their card and thats why some merchants might not like bank of america's new program where they will round ure purchases up to the nearest dollar and deposit the difference in the savings account. This will encourage use of the credit card whenever ythe buy anything, even small purchases, and will allow bank of america to collect more debit card fees from the merchant.

I doubt the merchant will have to pay more, because the merchant isn't receiving more.
If I buy a pack of gum for .25 and boa bumps it to a 1.00, the merchant only gets the quarter so is only charged the fees on the quarter. The other .75 is handled internally with boa. |

You misunderstood air659's point. The merchant will not like the added fees as the debit card is used instead of cash for even the smallest purchases, where the purchaser would have paid cash before. |
