wrx2004 said:I haven't called for the retention offer yet. But in my most recent statement closed on Oct 12, they gave be double Cash Back for the gas category. ie 10% on gas purchase, but still 1% on everything else. Not mentioned anywhere in the statement, but the numbers show that it is true.

I calculate every month so I am pretty sure I didn't make a mistake in calculation. I guess I will wait until this goes away before calling in for retention.

Ya know, I seem to have gotten a pretty decent sized "Cash Back" myself this statement. I don't know if it's 10% for gas...but since you mention it, I'll have to go back and calculate it. I couldn't get the numbers to add up. But I'll try the 10% on gas and see what happens.

Surely aren't going to complain though!

I also got extra 1% back on airfare in March 05. It took them until April to subtract it back!

Not quite about retention, but it is too late to search for possibility of repost before starting a new thread (well, that's how I found this thread anyway): an offer from today

holiday offer As a valued Citi Dividend cardmember, instead of the usual 1% Cash Back, you can earn a full 5% Cash Back* on department store purchases** made with your Dividend Card until 12/31/05.

*Earn up to $300 Dividend Dollars in a calendar year payable in checks of at least $50 only upon your request. Additional terms and conditions apply. For complete details, see the Citi Dividend Directory of Services.

** In order to qualify for this offer, your card account referenced above must be open and not in default under any card agreement at all times. If your account is closed for any reason, including if you convert to another card product, you may no longer qualify for this offer. Department Stores are defined as large stand-alone merchants selling a general line of merchandise from departments that usually have separate checkout counters. Online catalog, mail order and telephone purchases are not eligible unless the merchants identify the transactions as being made at a department store. We do not determine whether merchants correctly identify and bill transactions as being made at a department store. However, we do reserve the right to determine which purchases are eligible for this offer.

theahnfahn said:I would advise against this. In the past I've tried to close cards and was given all sorts of offers to keep the account open. However, the last card I had offered Cash Back. I earned around $100 without ever carrying a balance. When I decided it wasn't the best Cash Back card for me I called to close the account. The CSR closed that account the instant I asked for it to be closed. She didn't even give me a single offer or at least confirm that I really did want to close the account. I felt sad that night and I'm still not sure why :'O(

So call them back, reopen it, and try again. No big deal, I've actually closed/opened the same card like 4 times. And no, there's no hard inq to re-open and they use the same #.

BTW At least twice when I've closed, they've offered me 5% on everything, but they won't budge on the cap, so I go ahead and close. (One time I closed after hours, and the retention dept actually called me a few days later). I'm thinking for 2006, I'll reopen in December, then call in January to close to capitalize on their 5% on everything offer

Edit: You can reopen a closed Citi card for 12months.

I just called and got an additional 4% on everyday purchases on my Citi Dividends Card for the next 3 months. CSR was very happy to help. Thanks OP.

Got additional 3000 points to my diamond preferred rewards card w/out any purchase requirement. Thanks, OP!

Anyone been able to get Citi to give 5/1% TY points on the PP Elite card with a $75 annual fee? I called up asked about canceling or getting any kinda of offer on it. All they offer to do it switch it diamond preferred credit card that has no annual fee. I prefer to keep the PP Elite card as I dont pay the annual fee on it anyways but sure would love the 5/1% over 2/1% I currently get.

Thank you

How do you get away without paying the annual fee?

Bank with Citibank and keep over $100K between deposit and investment accounts with them. They will waive PP Elite + Citibank American Airlines card + Diners Club.

This has been covered in another thread anyways called "ways to qualify for Citigold". 99% of the people with Citigold account dont keep large cash balances as Citibank never paid a great rate on deposit accounts. The way to do it is buy either VRCO or VRDO as they are varible rate "Corp" or "Muni" bonds which reset weekly on tuesday. And VRCO currently paying 4.80%+ and always trade at par. Only thing you give up is FDIC Insurance but if your buying a quility bonds that are rated AAA that is really a mute issue anyways. And Citibank short term "Corp Bond fund" which also trades always nav price of 1 is paying 4.87% as of last Tuesday. Again fund is not FDIC insuranced. And if AAA Corp bonds are too risky for you Citi also offers a short term "Treasury-Backed Zeros" fund that nav trades at 1 always and is currently paying 4.04 which is even better than ED. I dont think anyone here belives the US Goverment is going to default on there debit.

My orginal post had nothing to do with how to get annual fee waived. I wondering if anyone been able to get Citi to offer them 5/1% TY points on PP Elite.

Is it worth having savings which can be tapped if the cards have unpaid balances? My point here....

LOL unless you are a dead beat and planing on going BK or not paying your bills what is your point? I always pay my bills on time so if I have my money at Citibank or Bank of Mexico where Citibank can not get to it what is the point?

Only reason I even mention about the Citigold thread was if you are smart there are ways to qualify for Citigold account get the annual fees waived on your credit cards without having a true loss in effective rate paid on you balance there. Yes I understand theses investment are not FDIC insured but if you think there "Treasury-Backed Zeros Fund" is going to go under then having $100K in Citibank or ED is going to be a mute point because if the US goverment ever defaulted on it debit it would need to devaluate the US dollar making any savings you have at ED or ING as worthless as toilet paper you use to wipe your bottom.

I always pay my bills on time, but I sooner or later expect my acounts to be comprised from hackers or identity theives, so I don't trust anything anymore. Truly paranoid I guess. The scenario I find scary is someone managed to withdraw a huge sum from Penfed, Principal, or our local credit union credit card and now my savings in these banks are frozen until the matter is investigated and cleared. How long will that be? That could happen without credit card, but because I use my credit card often and not a debit card (requested to not be issued one) there is a very good chance the credit card could be a weak link.

Well I guess you had back luck. I have had my Citibank credit used illegal and the bank just had me send them a noterized statement saying I did not make the charges and they removed them for my bill. My card was used for almost $15K in charges. I also dont have a mastercard issued ATM card because I dont want my bank account getting cleaned out just like you said my fear is someone somehow get my account number and goes to town on it and cleans out my checking account. So I have a plan ATM what only works at the banks atm machines with my personal pin.

Did you have your Citi bank savings/investment accounts open at the time your credit card was compromised, and the accounts never frozen?

I'm familiar with the affidavit required in fraud cases but just wondering if your accounts were frozen also.

Yes I had my Citibank bank deposit and investment accounts open and they never froze either account. As a matter of fact they never even froze my credit card. They just canceled older number issued me a new card number. Fedex me some forms to fill out and have notarized with my new card. While they where waiting for the forms they issued me a temp credit on my account to cover the fraudulent charges. I just mailed in the forms and never heard about it again. They removed 100% of the charges did not even charge the $50 that they are allowed to by law.
