First, Im going to tell you how to get to retention:
Hours: M-F 7-1am Saturday 8-10:30 pm Sunday 10-8:30 pm. All times Eastern.
After CSR answers say "Does my account qualify for retention if I was to close this account?"
If CSR says yes, ask to be transferred.
These are available to MOST card members:
Additional 1% Cash Back on Dividend/AT&T cards for 3 or 6 months. So the card becomes 2%/5% up to $300.
0% apr for 12 months, extended to 15 months if you spend $300 in purchases within 90 days with no fee. This will involve converting whatever card you have to an AT&T Platinum Card. Make sure whatever card you convert you redeem any rewards you have as you will lose them. To get the whole 15 months simply spend $300, pay it off, then do a BT.
Bonus 1500/3000/5000 points on your Diamond Preferred Rewards card with $300 in purchases.
When you speak to the retention rep, do not proactively ask for these offers. Simply state why you wish to close your account and let the rep offer it you. IE: "My MBNA card offers me more CashBack then this card." Etc, etc etc.
Keep in mind, I said this is available to MOST card members, if you don't qualify for retention or if you dont get the offer you want, don't complain as the retention reps cant make an offer to you if its not already available. However, you could have a lazy or incompetent rep, feel free to call back and try again. One thing to keep in mind, every time you speak to retention reps, it is noted on your account.
If you get offers not mentioned here, please post them as this will become an updated thread.

I managed a lower APR on my student card, 15% dropped to 8.99%, I asked for even lower rate but the rep said thats the best he can do as its a rewards(1%,5%) card.

I originally signed up for a Diamond Rewards for a 50 or 100gc, i forgot already, I had it for a year before I realized I still had it, called to cancel, was offered 5000pts to keep it, said ok, got my points, redeemed for $50gc, called again to cancel, and I couldn't believe they offere me ANOTHER 5000pts to keep it, last week I redeemed it for another $50gc, lets see what happens on my 3rd try to cancel the card, lmao
Thank you for the helpful hints, Storme. It didn't take but a few minutes to get the bonuses.

This worked like a charm for me, took less than 5 minutes total, and bumped my 1%/5% to 2%/5%. Will allow my to max out my rewards right around the end of the year now. Big thanks to you OP!

There's another way to speak to a retention person, they may actually CALL YOU after cancellation. That happened to me earlier this year with a Citi Universal card about 4 days after I closed it. They offered me 5% on EVERYTHING, however couldn't forego the $300 cap.

no go for me. told the csr about better offer from mbna and she couldn't do anything for the Cash Back. she could only offer me 0% bt and a 5% drop of the interest rate. i pay my balance full every month, so i was hoping for the 2%/5% Cash Back.

This may sound greedy but I wish the 1% extra applies to the "everyday" category also (i.e. 2%/6%).

also i dont understand the increase in CashBack rate!
If the cap is $300 - then it doesnt matter even if you get 50% CashBack - coz it will just stop at $300!
I always reach my $300 within first 6months (already did for my citi plat)
this is useful for only those stuggling to reach the cap.

Once you reach the cap you use a different 5% card, so it is not waisted.

LOL The higher you Cash Back % the less you need to spend in order to earn $300. I would not mind getting 50% Cash Back. Then you only have to spend $600 in order to get $300 in Cash Back. Then switch to the next card

fyi,
Called the number and the CSR who answered could only give 0% APR for a year which I did not want. He could not/would not give me bonus points. I asked to be transferred to the retention center and the "retention" guy was very polite and helpful but could only give me 1500 bonus points if I spend $300 in 3 months. He also mentioned to call back later again and see if they could do better!
I was offered bonus points I changed my card from Diamond preferred rewards to Dividend rewards. I did not want to do that because I can earn 75000 point/year but with dividend, the max is 30000 points or $300/year.
Thanx OP, 5 minutes got me 1500 bonus points. I shall do it again later (if I remember).
those of you getting an additional 1%, what's your usage pattern on the card?
- use regularly -- (a) pay in full -- (b) have balance (yikes! cut up the card and transfer to a 0%) - don't use regularly -- (c) never have -- (d) used to but have moved to chase cash plus, etc.
um, or options e through zz.
thx! (i'm in d)

Got the reply that my account does not qualify for retention. Too bad, they will just let me go.
I see little value in the 2% offer as I usually max out the $300 yearly limit in the 5% purchase category. 0% BT is not bad, but the period they offer is usually shorter than what new cardholders get. Bonus points look good, but all my Citi cards now are Dividend or AT&T Universal Cash Rewards. Has anyone received good retention offers for Citi Professional Elite or AAdvantage?
camiolo said: Thanks! I'll be getting 5% on my college tuition. Too bad it's only for 3 months.
How do you do that? Tuition payment deos not belong to the 5% category unless you have the "5% for all purchases" card.

Explain how it would end retention offers? Getting 2% on rewards instead of 1% has nothing to do with having debt on the card.
Sure it does, in the aggregate. The only way the CC companies can afford these promotions is because they collect so much interest and fees from people who revolve balances. If everyone suddenly decided to pay off their credit cards, it's highly unlikely they could afford such lucrative rewards. We'd go back to the days of high annual fees and rewards programs that you have to pay to join.

But don't credit cards also collect fee from merchants when you use their card and thats why some merchants might not like bank of america's new program where they will round ure purchases up to the nearest dollar and deposit the difference in the savings account. This will encourage use of the credit card whenever ythe buy anything, even small purchases, and will allow bank of america to collect more debit card fees from the merchant.
Tried, didn't qualify. I told them if they couldn't extend the 0% offer, I would pay it off with a 0% BT from another card and close the account. That didn't fly. I guess I don't have the touch...

Was offered 5 miles/dollar on gas/grocery(/drugstores?) for a year, wanted to close an AAdvantage gold MC. Perhaps not worth paying anual fee for me. Concerning the "rule" for this card, that one can cancel it within 37 days after the annual fee charged to get the fee reversed -- I am curious about the following possibility: The terms when I opened this acct promised 5000 bonus miles after "the first anniversary". It seems logical that these would post at the end of the billing cycle having the anniversary date in it. Which is definitely < 37 days from that date, as well as from the date when the annual fee is charged. So... moral issues neglected for a moment.. it looks like I can then close the card within 37 days after beeing charged annual fee, get the annual fee reversed, yet bonus 5000 miles posted. Anyone tried this game?
