Does anyone know what the expiration date for the 'start' code is?

I did not have to mail anything for HSBC. You do have to wait for snail mail before you can do anything though. One evelope with you login, one with your password, and then a third with your ATM card. And you can not setup ACH until you receive your ATM card. Lame!
Maybe a little off topic, but in general I am finding GMAC bank more user friendly to setup and use. |

They need proof of my address and want either a current utility bill or bank statement. Any idea if they'll take photocopies?
I don't see why they wouldn't, but I would scan it and email it to them. |

I would like to keep the account age for credit report purposes.
No credit report that I have seen sez anything about bank accounts, and I've reviewed a couple thousand the past few years - so i don't see any pupose that it serves to keep it open. |

What do you do with my Social Security number? Federal law requires us to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person that opens an account. Accordingly, when you apply to open an account, we are required to ask for a government-issued identification number, such as your Social Security number, to assist us in verifying your identity. This information will not be used for any other purpose. We appreciate your cooperation.
Note sure that this is a hard check but i just want to know what to expect. TIA
They just need to verify your identity, and make sure ur not a fraudster! |

Actually, I was able to set up ACH w/o my ATM card. I started the process on their website, entered a security key and then called customer service. A nice lady helped me over the phone to set up ACH by enabling me to bypass the screen that request ATM info. Once this is set up, you can add as many accounts as you want. My Citi account got verified instantly w/o the need for trial deposits, as I entered the Citi Online sign on info at the HSBC site. |

Is there a difference in fees between the debit and ATM card? Especially overseas ATM withdrawals? Does the debit card(MasterCard I think) charge the foreign exchange fee, etc? What network does the ATM card use?

I signed up yesterday and checked my credit report from the big 3 today, and they did not do a hard pull. I have had a credit union do a hard credit pull to open a savings account though. |

Has been the customer of former Fleet bank for many years. Never has this fee from the beginning. Called them they said after merged with BOA, need to have direct deposit to avoic this fee. Ok, I'll close that aaccount and looking for a new checking now. |

wow, after being curious and looking through all the pages on the HSBC website, its opened a whole new world of what investment actually means. ive learned that i know nothing about the real world of investments. its like a world for rich people. private financial advisors? accounts that need a minimum of $3 million? overseas investments in funds in currency, real estate, etc? how does it all work? the only world that ive been exposed to is the US stock exchanges, which is a pretty simple concept to learn, but theres so much more that i know nothing about. no one has shown me the way. or maybe its because im just a college student and i have control over insignificant amounts of money? oh well. i was curious so i checked the local banks i have checking accounts with and they all offer investment services. one of the sites said "private banking for the affluent and wealthy". crazy. how does one such as me who know very little learn about the financial world? oh, im just an architecture student. |

Darn I used the start code to open the account a couple of minutes ago. Any way to verify the code is still valid? When I completed the application, there was no mention about the $25. |

What is a snail mail?
I opened an account on line about ten days ago. I did not receive anything yet. But I do receive E-mail from them asking me to mail my bank statement to them. About seven days ago,I mailed my bank statement to them but I never heard of it since. Is that normal? |

"Snail mail" is what we in the US call the regular Postal Service mail. |
