Promo Code = start

Crap, I just opened up one for my parents without it. I wonder if I can scheme it in...

thanks OP, i've been waiting for this to open an hsbcdirect account!

thanks OP. but i started filling out the application and it doesn't say anything about $25. How do we know if it's for $25 ?

I found it. sorry

Thanks Op,

My experience is that HSBC and promo codes don't work well together. I used a
DM100 code for $35.00 when opening an online savings account in September, called
and verified it valid before use, and now cannot get them to pay the bonus. They want
me to send them documentation about the code.

Do we have some documentation about the code? Can someone post a scanned version of flyer, email etc?

Cool; been waiting for another promo from HSBC. Signed up.

They need proof of my address and want either a current utility bill or bank statement. Any idea if they'll take photocopies?

I was planning on merging my EmigrantDirect and INGDirect funds into this account, but there is a $15 Funds Transfer-In charge for each transfer (that's $30 man!). It seems like there are a lot of charges and underlying fees for this account if you actually take the time to read the Terms and Charges page. They even charge you $25 if you close the account within 6 months of opening it. I think I'll just keep mine at good old EmigrantDirect, although the ATM card here would be a nice touch.

I found this on their web:

Bank to Bank Transfers fee

* No transaction fees if you transfer money into your HSBC accounts from your non-HSBC accounts
* A $3.00 transaction fee will be charged for each outbound transfer from your HSBC accounts to your non-HSBC accounts
* No transaction fees will be charged for HSBC OnlineSavings, Domestic Private Banking or HSBC Premier customers

So I guess we can move money between ING and HSBC OnlineSavings. Am I right? The other question is: if I want to move from ING to HSBC, should I push from ING or PULL from HSBC? which way is better? and how about move from HSBC to ING?

Yes, you can move money from any bank to HSBC. There are no fees whatsoever. I have had a HSBC Online Savings account for a few months now and have moved money from ING, Emigrant, USAA, Compass Bank, and ETrade... no fees at all. As a note, I usually pull from HSBC; however, there is no particular reason as to why I do so.

I signed up for an account under the $35 October acount opening deal. My Account was credited about a month after opening. No problems at all.

Can you access what the routing number and check style account number through the site so you can set up an external pull transfer?

Ok so I cracked and opened a new account with them. :-D After hearing everyone add that they have never been charged for having funds transferred into their HSBC account, it sounds like a pretty nice deal. You can even specify if you want an ATM or Debit card assigned to the account. To keep myself from blindly spending the money, I chose the ATM card. It will be nice in case of any emergencies.

As far as the charges go though, I guess they could technically charge you if they wanted to for transfering money into their account since it's in the Terms and Charges disclosure that you agree to when opening the account. They do have conflicting information between the two above links however. I'm not sure why a bank would charge someone for bringing money to them, other than being overly greedy. Does anyone know about any underlying charges for closing my Emigrant and ING accounts? They've both been open for about 3 or 4 months now so I'm not too sure. Thanks for your help in advance.

Forgive a newbie question.

External pull, what exactly does that mean? How is that set up?
If I needs some money from my HSC account in a week or so.. how do I get it into my checking account? Do they send you a check by mail?

I have an ING account and I can transfer in and out with no fees..
That doesn't seem to hold true with HSBC.

What about Emigrant Direct?

Thanks in advance

Everything with HSBC Online is free, pushes and pulls.

When you login to HSBC and TAKE money out of your checking, you are pulling. When you send money OUT of HSBC, you are pushing. All are free, I'm setting up my first pushes & pulls this month, and they have a great setup.

On this page:
Bank to Bank Transfers fee
No transaction fees if you transfer money into your HSBC accounts from your non-HSBC accounts
A $3.00 transaction fee will be charged for each outbound transfer from your HSBC accounts to your non-HSBC accounts
No transaction fees will be charged for HSBC OnlineSavings, Domestic Private Banking or HSBC Premier customers

Are we not HSBC OnlineSavings customers if we sign up for this online account? So it must be free?

Correct. It is free. That was my point of posting the link.

I have been a HSBC customer for a few months, have done many transfers (in and out), and everything has been free. There are no service charges.

Are you Sure you transfered from ING and Emigrant directly to the HSBC online savings account without going through a checking account?

I have two checking accounts liked to my HSBC but I could not Link ING. The Bank-To-Bank transfer would not recognize INGDirect's routing number.

You are correct about no fees, I have not been charged for any of the transfers.

I also read in another thread that since INGDirect is a Saving account and not a checking account that is the problem with HSBC's Bank-to-bank feature.

I know you could transfer from ING to a checking account either at HSBC or elsewhere and then send it to the Online savings. I have done that, but its two steps.

If you really did INGDirect Orange Savings to HSBC Online Savings, how about giving us the steps required. This would be cool as it would save the double transfer and lost interest time.

Also if you are applying for a new account be sure to get the ATM card as they require it for the Bank-To-Bank transfer feature.

Cheers

There are no fees on the HSBC account. It was set up to compete with ING and ED, with the added benefit of an ATM card good globally. Great when traveling overseas, as it helps you avoid charges from overseas banks.

As for transferring straight from ING, I haven't been able to do it either and have to go through a checking account...but I may be missing something.

The only drawback to HSBC as I can see it is that they use ACH via an outside vendor to transfer funds which takes at least 3 days. ING was really fast and wires the next day in or out. ACH is like trying to clear a check. If you are moving out of ING to a checking account to HSBC, you lose a few days of interest, though it is soon made up by the 50 bp higher interest rate.

Hopefully, HSBC gets their systems updated and joins the modern world someday. I love the higher rate, but the ING system is still better and slicker looking.

If you are travelling overseas, does anyone have experience if HSBC is better / worse that Citi in terms of exchange rates when you withdraw from ATMs worldwide?

MosDeft said: Everything with HSBC Online is free, pushes and pulls.
Let me clarify. ACH push is free. ACH pull is also free and that is nice. However, wire transfers are not free. $15 for incoming wire transfer is not nice at all (I was charged that; most banks don't charge for incoming wire). $30 for outgoing wire is ok.

Well yeah that's what I meant, but what FWers wires money anyways

I'm in. $25 and a quick place to stash some BT money until I find a better place for it.

I always thought it was a Fed regulation that online savings bank accounts have a primary link to a checking account.

Is it possible to convert an existing HSBC Branch savings account to a HSBC Online Savings Account?

I would like to keep the account age for credit report purposes.

Your savings account is on your credit report? I've never heard of that before.

Sorry, I was thinking of the major three--I tend to forget about the others.

I've always had all my bank accounts listed on my credit reports- and I'm talking about the major 3 bureaus.

LOL, troll, go away

Great post, OP, I've opened an account today. Still have my ING acct and will hang on to that also for now.

Just received my $25 bonus for account opened in Sept.

Already got the $50 bonus for checking.

HSBC does not charge any fee. But the bank of your checking account or whatever account will not charge anything on both pull and push either?

its been a long time since i opened a deposit account of any type. can someone say if opening this account results in a hard credit check? the reason i ask is the following pop up while starting the application -

What do you do with my Social Security number?
Federal law requires us to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person that opens an account. Accordingly, when you apply to open an account, we are required to ask for a government-issued identification number, such as your Social Security number, to assist us in verifying your identity. This information will not be used for any other purpose. We appreciate your cooperation.

Note sure that this is a hard check but i just want to know what to expect.
TIA

After typing in 'start' - I dont see any place where its mentioned that i will be credited a $25 bonus. Where you do see the bonus info?
