I used my HSBC Debit card to withdraw money from a Wells Fargo ATM. The ATM had a sticker saying it may charge non-WF customers a fee of $1.50. I withdrew from my Online Savings; during the process, however, the screen didn't say anything about the WF Surcharge. When the cash came out and the receipt was printed out, it said nothing about any fees from Wells Fargo; it only stated my withdrawl amount.
I checked my HSBC account online and it only subtracted the amount I withdrew (no $1.50 non-HSBC ATM fee nor a Wells Fargo fee)
Does this mean that withdrawls at Wells Fargo ATMs (or at any other ATM for that matter) are free? Or do the ATM surcharges come around during the end of the billing cycle?
Do you have premire checking or Interest Checking Plus with HSBC? If not they charge $1.50 for using non HSBC ATM's on top of what ever fee the ATM charges.

I have neither of those. Has anyone ever withdrew money from their online savings with a non-HSBC ATM? Should the fees have been assesed immediately or does it take longer than that (or is it free at Wells Fargo ATMs)? If the ATM displays their ATM Surcharge fee physically with a sticker, but does not display it on the screen, is it legal for them to charge me that fee?

I use wachovia, and sometimes they do not post atm fees until the 15th or the 1st, lumped together...
if you use other bank's ATMs often, just open that has ATM fee rebates (i.e. Etrade MMA) look on ibankdesign.com for the list of bank account by feature.

I don't think you'll get charged from WF. I used to work for a bank and i could see the fee being assessed immediatly after someone made the withdrawal. It would say withdrawal: 20.00 fee: 1.50 (other banks fee).
Also, when people would get Cash Back at the grocery store, that would show up seperatly as well.

I've used my USAA Debit Mastercard at a Wells Fargo ATM and the ATM surcharge was included in the transaction amount. I'm betting that either HSBC has some kind of agreement with Wells Fargo, or more likely, it was an error.

Or it may be they are using the same subcontractor to run the ATMs. When I use my USAA card at Re pub-lic Bank, there is no surcharge, even though the ATM has a stickered surcharge. In fact the first couple of times on my statement, it came up as USAA ATM, then it changed to Re pub-lic Bank ATM

Did the screen happen to say it would charge you the $1.50 fee prior to your withdrawl? Mines didn't.....so does that mean that it recognized my card as a "member" card?
This is what I got from a not-so-knowledgable rep... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Valued Customer:
Thank you for your recent e-mail to HSBC Bank USA, N.A.
This may be something Wells Fargo is doing as a courtesy due to the joint venture. Officially, HSBC states that any non HSBC ATM may apply a service charge for use. That particular Wells Fargo branch may be able to confirm more.
HSBC does not charge any additional fee if a withdrawal is made at an HSBC ATM machine. When funds are withdrawn from another institution's ATM there would be a fee from HSBC of $1. A charge may also apply from the institution's ATM machine when the funds are being withdrawn. A notice of the fee is usually posted on the ATM machine.

what joint venture? (edit answered below)
perhaps this was bc of the joint venture between WF and HSBC?

okay, so my online transactions show CASH WITHDRAWAL ON XX/XX AT WFB XXXXX US
No fees from HSBC or Wells Fargo. I was dying to know for sure: "Am I able to use my debit/ATM card to make free withdrawls at WF ATMs?"
I called HSBC, the Indian guy picked up, he looked up my transaction, placed me on hold for 5 minutes, and came back to tell to call back after 6AM so that the system would be more up to date. He says my "transaction does not have complete information" or soemthing like that, which I think is complete bullcrap. The freaking transaction already posted to my account, so what is there? I assume that if Wells Fargo wanted to, they would have added the $1.50 fee to the withdrawl amount.
HAS ANYONE EVER USED THEIR HSBC ATM/DEBIT CARD AT ANY OTHER ATMS BESIDES HSBC ATMs? IF SO, HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR THE SURCHARGES TO POST? IF IT WAS IMMEDIATE, then i will assume that I am in the "clear" and that Wells Fargo does allow HSBC members to withdraw for free. Not only is HSBC associated with WF's Trade Bank, Wells Fargo also has a deal with HSBC Mexico where the WF customer can send money to Mexico and the recepient can withdraw from a HSBC branch or ATM in Mexico.

That's still a pretty broad assumption. It could just be a fluke of that ATM. I know I can get fee-free withdrawals with my credit union card at the BofA ATM in my school's student center, but I get charged a fee with the same card at their branch downtown.

Just to get rid of his calls, a Customer Service rep is going to say "We have added a $2.50 surcharge. Thanks for calling."

Yea, but I still wanted to know. My email, however was anonymous, from an alternate email address.

While there's no such thing as a definitive answer - but when I opened the HSBC Free Checking, I was told that when I WITHDRAW from Wells Fargo ATMs in California, there will be no surcharge by both banks. The caveat is of course you can only withdraw and not deposit from any CA Wells Fargo ATMs.
This is partly due to lack of HSBC ATMS (or branches) in California.
On a side note, for those of you traveling to Germany - Bank of American offers no-fee withdraw with any Deustch Bank ATMs too.

Sweet! So unofficially, HSBC members can withdraw from Wells Fargo ATMs in California for free! I'm guessing the bank representative told you this? This is simply wonderful news.

HSBC does NOT own Wells Fargo ... they have some sort of joint venture with Wells Fargo, but they do not own them.

What about trying to deposit money into an HSBC account from an WF ATM?
