I just got the ABN letter..these fu****g idiots are gonna get major crap tomorrow. 90 days monitoring ??? Are you friggin kidding you morons. What about when someone uses my information in 5 years ? You are on the hook ABN, for as long as I live, to cover ALL costs plus damages if any misuse occurs.
I take EXTREME pains to avoid any compromise of my personal info, and ABN just hands it to a thief on a plate. I am so upset and angry I can hardly stand it.
Please post back here if you are personally affected, and we'll work out a legal plan to make ABN accountable.

The website is:
www.truecredit.com/entry/GCEntry.jsp
The gift certificate code is: AAMG-DGJG-BKKB-XFRB.
Quoted for posterity and to note that the GC listed shows up as a 1 year monitoring. Thanks. |

Got my letter yesterday. I know exactly what you mean about protecting your information only to have someone else give it away. I had my identity stolen a few years ago by someone at a professional organization. They had my SSN for state licensing/continuing education filing. Someone there sold info on 25 of us to someone else. The only good of it is that the common thread was found by the police, the total amount got so high that the Secret Service was pulled in, and most of the folks went to prison. The most important part (which doesn't fit ABN, I guess), is that they went and deleted all SSNs in their database, and you have to write it in on the form that they sign/verify and pass on to the state each time you need education credit through them, now. |

Me neither. Didn't work last night, and still doesn't. This is REALLY aggravating.
<sarcasm>At least I already had my identity stolen, so the fraud alert is already in place.</sarcasm> |

At least they are following through with the credit monitoring after finding the tape. When I first saw the headline, I thought maybe that's why the Truecredit link wasn't working: "We found it, so no worries." Hopefully it was just a stupid mistake (that was learned from), and a bunch of us just get free credit monitoring out of it. |

qblunt said:I work for a major bank, Bank of America. The bank has lost data tapes before in the same way as ABN AMRO. We ship all of our data tapes off site to a data recovery center. There are two data recovery centers in the U.S. one in GA and one in Arizona. Each coast ships the data tapes to the nearest one. They are sent in these red hard turtle cases with a regular small masterlock that requires a key to open it. We use FEDEX to ship these turtles. Each major city has hundreds of servers and hundreds of tapes that get sent out daily to the data recovery sites. Quite a few end up "missing" or "lost." People see these turtles and probably think it's money or something of value inside, but when they get it home to break into it all they get are stupid DLT or LTO tapes that they can't do anything with it. Most people or even computer nerds couldnt get access to the data tapes if they tried. Almost everyone uses LTO tapes and more than likely they use Veritas Netbackup to do the backup of data. A common thief wouldn't have a $3-4K LTO scsi drive and they also wouldn't have the power to setup a Veritas master server to do a "restore" of the data. And on top of all of that, they would need a catalog tape from Netbackup to tell the server what serial # tape has what data from what day and from what server. So in other words, if someone stole a data tape, they would need the catalog tape that tells Netbackup what that tape contains. What does this all mean? Your average Joe, who would steal or find this data tape couldn't do shi1t with it if he or she even tried too. FYI, I bank with a credi union and not with BOA. Pretty sad.
Edit: When I say "lost." I don't mean one tape gets lost but a "red tub" will get lost. We use two different red tubs. One hold 10 tapes while the other holds 20 tapes. If some of you don't know, the LTO tape we use can hold 200 GIG of data per tape. There is no way any company can transmit that much data/info daily to an offsite data recovery center from every bank site. BOA has thought of it but the bandwidth and time involved was way to expensive to get the links big enough on both sides and to purchase data silo's to hold hundreds of terabytes of data.
LOL. Thanks for the detailed post. Now the common thieves who previously didn't know how to acess the tapes, do. |

Just got to the web site and registered. The next screen said: "Attention - Your credit report indicates that additional security precautions must be taken before we can grant access to your credit report online. What to do: Please call the Customer Service Team for assistance. A Service Team representative will assist you in confirming the necessary information and, if appropriate, grant you online access to your credit report in minutes."
I called and was on hold for 15 minutes. The CS rep told me there is nothing they can do tonight to fix this. It was because of a fraud alert I had put on my CR because of the Scottrade "Mishap" last week......They said to try and log on tomorrow morning and if I could not log on, call back in the morning....
Great customer service....
Good Luck to the rest of you
After 2 days and 3 calls (total of 45 minutes on hold) to Transunion, I finally got access to my credit reporting (upgraded to 1 year) this morning.

I still can't get to the site. I did get through on the 800#, and the guy said that they "are updating the site because they found the tape" and it should be back up tomorrow. |

Got my letter(s) yesterday (one for me, one for my wife).
I wonder when I will start to get telemarketing calls from other lenders about refinancing. If I could get the same rate with no closing costs, I would think about taking my business elsewhere. |
