Received this email a few days ago:
"As of Monday, January 30, 2006, Amboy Direct's Business Money Market Maximizer everyday rate for balances over $25,000 has increased to 4.15% APY."

Just opened an account (have not yet verified it) and found it extremely easy. Everyone's been giving this bank great reviews - I'm surprised it isn't more popular. By the way, the website said the 5% bonus rate is good until 2/15/06. They may extend it again but just wanted to point it out in case anyone wants to get in before the deadline.

(I moved my money from ING because of some issues with the Winter Save Up sale. I deposited X amount into my ING individual account and then moved part it to my ING joint account (to keep my individual account below the FDIC limit). Apparently by doing this, I lost the right to get the bonus interest on the amount moved to my joint account because ING counts ALL withdrawals against you - even internal ones. Which makes no sense to me and the customer rep agreed it was unfair but said those were the rules.)

I find the interface confusing actually. It seems that it was first developed for employees and resembles their mainframe screens. Then they took out all unneeded functionality, added a few pieces here and there and called it online banking, still referring to customers as 'employee' here and there. But I did not fall in love with ING's UI either.

Major problems: there is no way to cancel, re-schedule or edit the amount of a pre-scheduled transfer. Once you schedule it, forget about it. You may be able to get some help over the phone; I haven't tried.

Your account number IS your user name. Major security problem.

Amboy employees can see your password as plain text and asked me to verify it over the phone. It should really be encrypted using one-way hash.

Called amboydirect and was told this offer will be extended till the end of the month. Also, spoke to a supervisor who assured me that to open the account they only do a check with checksystems. So - there will be no inquiry on our credit report.

Was also told that since I'm in Texas the initial deposit had to be an ACH transfer from an existing checking account. Afterwards they could accept deposits from checks mailed in but they strongly urge only ACH deposits from the ONE linked account set up by the initial deposit.

The CSR said that even though they may take up to 2 days to post to my account I would not lose any interest because I would still be earning it from the other bank. She said my money would not be sitting around in "limbo somewhere earning no interest." Has anyone experienced loss of interest do to slow ACH transfers? I'll be moving almost 100k so each day's loss of interest is significant.
Currently I'm earning 4.55% at Superior Savings and this will not be worth it for only 3 months if too much interest is forfieted.

Also, (for me anyway being in Texas) the only way to withdraw funds is through ACH out to the ONE linked account. Only one account can be linked.

what csr told you was correct, i also linked superior savings to amboy direct, it took about 4, 5 days to see amboy deposit my money, and the day amboy post deposit was also the day superior deducted my money

Well, I figured I would wait till ING and HSBC promo rates end before using Amboy everbanks promo deals.

Besides, amboy goes back to 4%, right ?
You lose some days interest during the switch !

Two reasons I made the switch: 1. Amboy's deal may not still be available after April 15th and 2. Because of my internal transfer at ING - I could only earn 3.8%. I looked into HSBC and Everbank but it seemed like a lot of people complained about time delays with HSBC and Everbank doesn't support ACH.

The APY for Money Market Maximizer is now 4.33%.

I have done ACH push and pull to 5 different checking/MM accounts from my Everbank account so far.

nosatalian said:Seems nice, but I think the catch is that you only make 1% on all of your money up to $30,000 and the 4 or 5% applies only to the top half of your money. Since nobody in their right mind will keep any more than 100k in this account (FDIC limit) you are effectively making at MOST 3.8% only if you have the full 100k in there, and this is only for the 3 month promotional period.

The verdict: stick with Emigrant/HSBC and make greater than 4% return on ANY amount of money.
They are not making this easy to understand, but I gather the calc for the final APY is based on a single deposit that gains 5% apr for 3 months, and then 4.33 apr for 9 months.

That is all hocus pocus. 5% apr for 3 months, and then to the best account.

Addendum: I plugged 101.25 into a finance calculator for 9 periods of 4.33% apY and got the advertised 4.53%.
So I think the first 3 months is 5% annual SIMPLE interest.

Set up a bank-to-bank link to Amboy. First, transferred out $20.54 no problem. Then attempted to transfer out $3,077.07 (leaving $1.01 in the account). It failed. Any ideas? Thanks!

It should work, but please let us know if you contact Amboy and find out what is their explanation. Anybody else had problems transfering large sums out of AmboyDirect's MMM account?

Amboy CSR said, you can only transfer out from Amboy to a bank account that is linked *by* Amboy (only one bank). No transactions are allowed for moving money out if there are initiated from other bank that have established external links to Amboy. However, you can deposit money into Amboy that way.

P.S.: I mentioned in the previous post, "First, transferred out $20.54 no problem." But that transaction is not finalized yet, and should probably fail because it was initiated from another bank (with an established link to Amboy).

Good to know, thanks.

It looks like the promotional rate of 5.00% for the first three months is no longer available.
The regular rate for balances over 30K is 4.55% as of 4/24/06.

As noted by particular in the 'Best current APY' thread, there is Premium Online Savings account offered by Amboy Direct at 4.75% APY , w/ no minimums. This rate makes it a valid alternative to GMAC and Presidential. I could not find any thread related to this particular account, as it seems to be different than the Amboy's MM Maximizer.

Does anybody have any experience with this particular Online Savings account (e.g. hard pulls, wait times for ACH transfers etc)?

I don't believe Amboy Direct offers 4.75% currently. I have an account with them. Is this 'Premium Online Savings' the same as the old 'Amboy Direct'? Mine says 'eSavings Account.' Current 'eSavings' interest rate: 4.0200%.
