I agree with Clocks in that it has to do with your usage. If you are going for a CashBack optimization strategy, you won't be spending much on each card, so I'd say True Earnings would be the way to go. I paid for my honeymoon with that - the 2% travel CashBack was nice for charging our cruise.

I love AMEX.

* No preset spending limit. On business trip I needed to go to the airport and fly same day somewhere -- $4K in expenses followed. Both of the other people I was travelling with didn't have the credit to handle it. My AMEX footed their bills, too. Company paid back and I paid the bill online... easy, breezy. My coworkers looked unprofessional and foolish. It's like the AMEX commercial with the business dinner. Dodo coworkers didn't go an get an AMEX either, when another job like this popped up... and I was on vacation, they both got blasted for not being able to make it work. Company now provides corporate AMEX. The 12,000 miles were nice, too.

* Easy contest of charges. If you have an error on your card, just call them. AMEX appears to really go to bat for you and assume you are right and wait for the merchant to prove otherwise. They immediately take the charge off your bill, too. No writing in, no forms, written notice, faxes, or other BS. You can even do this online right from your online statement -- easy as 1-2-3. If I ever feel like something may go wrong with a purchase or someone doing something for me -- AMEX all the way. A couple of Platinum VISA and MC cards have this now, I've noticed.

* BVG, Rental Car Insurance, etc. Other cards have this -- but combined with the above two items, I find I use AMEX just to be covered.

* Replacement -- separate cards for each card holder on an account, you can get expedited delivery ANYWHERE you are... many CC companys will only send a card to your home address (don't lose your CC on a vacation or you'll find out for yourself). I've had this done in 3 days when I reported it as stolen. I've had simple replacement of worn cards (hehe, I use them this much) take 2-3 weeks.

rigor said:i remember a while ago, that neiman marcus only accepted AMEX or their innercircle(?own? brand) credit card or cash. not sure if they still do that. Why? because at one point there was exclusivity to AMEX.

Perhaps when the Gold and Platinum cards really meant you were pimp. I guess all they have left these days is the BLACK AMEX card.

It makes sense if you have the need to spend absurd amounts of $$ on items at Neiman Marcus you should be able to carry the AMEX card.

I still to this day have been declined (several times) for neimans' card. Have like 160K in AMEX lines last time i checked.

Yes, they are still AMEX only.

Why NOT AMEX...that is the question

There is a very serious disconnect between front and back rooms (they say they would research the problem and don't follow thru)....so the way to handle it is ask for the "SUPERVISOR" who can make a decision on the spot. On one application the extra 5% rebate was missing and on another 5000 Delta miles...sloppy application processing and inefficient reps who don't know how to frame an inquiry and request an investigation correctly!!

After numerous calls to straighten it, each time the call being noted, there was ample proof that AMEX was clearly not getting it right, so the decision in my favor was handled by a supervisor WITHOUT an investigation. That's how you do it! (so much for tweaking...bleh)

i feel really dumb. I assumed my gold business rewards card had BVG. How wrong i was. I had to return the laptop i just bought and re-buy it with my spg AMEX. once the free year is up im dumping business gold.

alert mods

I thought pretty much all the gold cards had BVG? You must of picked the one that didn't. There is only like five different versions. lol

For the record....ONEPASS = NONEPASS, no offense but a hard system to deal with. I find Star Alliance much better.

Platinum/Centurion cards also reimburse u for LOST ITEMS, not just stolen or damaged items...this is a BOON if you lose something and I always feel safe dragging along that nice camera or laptop with me.

Gold, IMHO isnt really worth it and is really the entry level AMEX charge card. They are pushign it really hard fee free for the first year. So I guess that devalues the "wow" factor with gold, the new platinum is the centurion and the platinum I think still holds its own pretty well. Centurion was just nicked the Starwood Prefeered GUest (SPG) Platinum to Gold, something Platinums have as well.

The real difference comes in to the level seperating gold and platinum. Mostly because the platinums $400 fee is hard to justify even with BVG and EVEN if you coudl claim something was "lost"

The lounges rock though, seriously and if you travel to Mexico or "unpublished" areas in the middle east, asia and europe, there are even AMEX Platinum/Centurion lounges. I think a very private unheard of one is in MEXICO CITY Internatonal Airport.

But thats only if you travel a lot. Otherwise, I've been treated ifne as Gold but did notive I get very good CSRs (not Indian) when I do call, 24 hours a day including platinum/centurion travel services and concierge (who booked me a 25 seat table at santana row little italys in san jose the night before...HARD!)

if I may ask some stupid questions:

1. Do I still qualify for the warranty extention if I cancelled that card but now the thing stops working?
2. How can I do the warranty extension/return protection if I lost or send the original receipt for rebate?

Thanks.

Bicmos -

When you cancel the card you cancel the service since it all ties back to the card, you can always call and let us know.

You should have copy of the receipt - what if the rebate folks had lost your submission.

only reason I use onepass (continental) is because they have a Hub in cleveland where I am from.

Mastercard also doubles the original warranty time period up to a maximum of one additional year. "If, however, the original warranty is for more than one year, no coverage will apply." Will Mastercard extend the warranty if the warranty is exactly 1 year?

well said. I found myself using AMEX blue for most things rather than my citi dividends just because I needed their service to be there for a peace of mind.

Citibank also offers extended warranty as well. Because of that and the CashBack, I use my Citibank over AMEX.

"AMEX extends the terms of the original manufacturer's warranty for a period of time equal to the duration of the original manufacturer's warranty, up to one additional year (up to three additional years for Centurion card members), on warranties of five years or less that are eligible in the U.S." AMEX Link

Mastercard also doubles the original warranty time period up to a maximum of one additional year. "If, however, the original warranty is for more than one year, no coverage will apply." MC Link

Only Visa Signature cards have the extended warranty benefit and they extend up to one additional year for warranties of three years or less. Visa Link

I learned this the hard way because who really spends time to read the fine-print in the card benefits anyway? Case in point, I tried to file a claim for a dead Lexar jumpdrive that I purchased with my MC. Since Lexar's warranty is two-years, I thought that MC would extend the warranty to three years and then I can file a claim. Unfortunately, that is not true and MC customer assistance told me to suck it. In a separate incident, I tried to file a claim for a dead Canon digital camera that I purchased with my AMEX Blue. The camera was still under warranty. I originally bought the camera for $270 and it would have costed me $220 to send it to Canon and have them fix it. I filed a claim with AMEX over the phone and it was easy. They did not ask me to send in any paperwork and in a few days, I got $270 back. For this reason, I use AMEX over Citibank.

Hi, I read many posts about AMEX's good rental car insurance experience. Does that mean I can decline the insurance from the car rental company or I have to buy the car insurance from the rental car company and at the same time use my AMEX card to pay for it?

Thanks.

pruks said:This is my GOOD AMEX experience:

I rented a car from Enterprise, by the time my flight arrived at the destination it was 11:45PM, I booked a Midsize car with free upgrade. The enterprise guy told me that he has no midsize cars and he can upgrade me for $5 a day and Gave me a Nissan Maxima. I was happy, TOOK ALL THE INSURANCES THEY HAD TO OFFER (including PAI), signed the contract and left. 15 days later one fine morning I came out of my Hotel, and I couldnot believe my eyes "THE CAR WAS SITTING ON TWO ASPHALT BRICKS, ALL 4 TYRES STOLEN" . Called the cops, got the report number and then called Enterprise to tell them about the incident. Enterprise told me that the Maxima was a premium car and they offer Loss or Damage Waiver for only upto $1000, they told me that I have to pay for all the tyres and loss of business. I was very pissed as they did not tell me all this earlier and got me signed for the $1000 limited insurance in the mid of night when I was tired and exhausted. Still it was my mistake that I signed the contract without reading it, then I remembered that I rented the car with my AMEX Blue card. I called AMEX and all they asked was for the Police report Number and the Enterprise number. They covered about $3000 which is great. I LOVE AMEX.

To clarify a few points just made....Yes Mastercard will give you an extra year on a 1 year manufacturer's warranty, but if the manufacturer's warranty is more then 1 year, then there is no extra coverage by them. And there is an exception rule: if the product has up to a 1 year warranty, and you take (up to) 1 additional year warranty with a service contract, Mastercard WILL cover you for the 3rd year...
Regarding Visa's extended warranty, they will add up to 1 additional year on manufacturer's warranties of up to 3 years (example: if your product comes with a 3 year warranty, you get a 4th year through Visa)....If you have, say, a 1 year manufacturer's warranty, and purchase any service contracts, Visa won't give you an additional year).
Visa also will sell you (at very reasonable prices) a service contract to cover your item up to a full 5 years (see their website for more details).
Lastly, while it IS true that the Extended Warranty feature is standard only on the Visa Signature Cards, each bank has the option of supplying the feature on Gold/Platinum Cards....Citibank and Chase DO this...therefore, a Citibank or Chase Gold/Platinum level Visa Card DOES HAVE EXTENDED WARRANTY....
Also, a minor advantage with Visa is that you can (not required to) register the product with them in advance, so that if you need to use the service, you don't have to go looking for the paperwork....and also...you can register the product or file claims ONLINE....

Well, looks like I maxed out my AMEX Blue Cash Back spending for the year. A whole one month too soon as well.

Looks like I averaged 1.8% CashBack across the board. Not too bad, but I would have thought I would have done better... I only used my Discover card for the 5% promos they had during the year and AMEX for everything else.
Maybe I need to rethink that and save AMEX just for the 'everyday spends' and Discover for everything else.

Oh well, at least AMEX Blue received $0 in finance charges from me for the 2005 year!
I guess I'll switch to my AMEX Starwood for this month, since I'd get 0% for any new Blue charges until March.
