Geico is one of the cheapest??? Not in my experience. I had to drag my mother off Geico kicking and screaming, but a lower rate is a lower rate and cannot be ignored, so she did it.
When I first bought my car, Geico quoted me a rate that was higher than the actual car note!!! |

i ditched allstate long time ago, they raised my rates a lot for no good reason, for a long time I was with AAA, and when AAA raised my auto rate, I found Wanwanesa was the lowest, so i switched to them, my home is too old to pass their underwriting though |

Well we were with Allstate and just as others said the premium was going up slightly every year. Well this last year I asked them and they just said its because of the market, well I work in Insurance and its not going up its going down or atleast flat. Well I looked around and got a local agent here in Atlanta and she did the research and for the two cars and a house she beat Allstates price by 900$ a year in total. I was alittle shocked. THe limits were higher and deductible better. I guess that I what I get for not checking around. I tried to get with USAA since my father was in the army but it seems that he too was not on there plans ever. I would like to know how to get on just so I can have the opportunity.
If you want my agents contact info just let me know. |

No kidding. I lived in Buckhead for a while. You have to go about 85-90 MPH on the Interstate through ATL just to keep up with the other cars... |

We don't qualify for USAA so they are out of the equation.
Yep, Allstate agent gives me the same crap when I question the higher rates; it's the market, hurricanes, other disasters. Then, he goes on thinking he'll help me by seeing if I want to increase my deductibles...to offset the raised rates!
Geico did give me the lowest quote out of the ones I listed so far.
I still have Farmer's and State Farm to get back to me but the picture is clear, I won't be with Allstate by the time things are done. |

I'm from Texas, so i know the hail there. But how does it "total" a car. Of course I'm the guy who's at the dealership the morning after a big hail storm. My car looks like someone took a ball pean hammer to it, but oh god was it cheap.
Great thread, I'm in NC now. Will have to check out this Erie place. One thing i found by moving here is that ALOT depends on your state. NC actually regulates what discounts you can recieve within the state no matter who you go with. So in NC you basically can get a multi-car and 3 year good drive and that's about it. The state forbids the "association" discounts like 10% off for being in a credit union or whatever. I think they also forbid the good grades thing for under 18 drivers. |

I just changed from Allstate to Amica for my homeowner's insurance. Amica was 25% lower, and they are one of the best in the country! |

The cost to fix the body damage from the hail was more than the car was worth. We (my dad anyone) took the money from state farm, finished the payoff on the car, and we drove it for a couple more years with all the dents. That was in Fort Worth around 1992 I think. |

I have a stupid question about changing your homeowner's insurance? If you change during a policy, does your current company refund your escrow account the amount you already paid in advance for the remaining time on the policy? Or do you have wait until the policy expires? Do you have to notify your mortgage company of the new insurer, or do they handle that for you?
I've switched car insurance many times, but just bought a house and not keen on the homeowners yet. TIA for any help. |

I'm with Nationwide, who keeps inching up each year too. I just did a quote for the 2 cars and home in the Chicago suburbs and ended up with a 15% savings with Amica. They beat the cars by 25% and beat the house by about 10%. They also beat the quote I got on the cars by Geico. |

Is there a site that can take your information and give you the best rates from a bunch of companies at once to save time? I seem to remember a site like that, but cannot remember at all.
I would recommend for everyone to avoid Nationwide (which it seems like no one here has anything positive to say about them anyway) |

Progressive supposedly does that, but when I did it they only gave me 2 other quotes besides their own. |

We had an awful time with Erie. Back when hubby used to take care of things we were paying 600 per year in 1996 for a 1986 Dodge K car. Hubby did not know we should only have liability Any way it was hit by a hit and run on Christmas Eve. We called and left a message. After the holiday weekend was over we called them back and they gave us crap about not calling them right away. So that was strike one. Strike two was DH dad had the same agent(STILL has the same agent). He hit a deer they were thinking about denying the claim because they said he did not hit a deer. I don't know what the adjuster thought he hit, but the blood and hair kind of gave it away to me. |

I have had State Farm for years, but have shopped my insurance around about every 3 years or so. Each time I have done so, I have been unable to find any insurers that could compete, since I have all of the discounts that come with multiple insurance lines. In fact, I called Progressive and they said that they rarely are able to beat State Farm with the multiple line discount. |

Do yourself a favor by checking with an Independent Agent because you never know and a quote is for free. Independent Agents represent multiple insurance companies instead of only one. I saved a whole bunch of money by combining my coverage for home/umbrella/vehicles under one company. One thing my brother inlaw learned - YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR EVEN IF IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!!! He had an Allstate auto claim and they jerked him around. I was hit by another vehicle and my insurance agent called the other company and set up a "3rd party claim" without calling my company. If you have a direct writer insurance company you have to report it to them directly no getting around this. The other company paid for my car to be repaired at my local body shop and gave me a comparable car to use (I drive an SUV and let me rent another SUV). I asked why not go thru my company I mean I've been paying premium - they said until the claim is "subrogated" (meaning they get the money from the other company) it is known as an "incident" on my policy and companies can cancel you if you have too many "incidents" on your policy within 3 years. I said but it wasn't my fault - they said the companies look at it this way. Too many not-at-fault accidents - what are you doing wrong to have this happen to you. Get hit in the rear too many times? Are you jamming on your brakes, not a safe driver, etc. Comes down to this in auto insurance - look for companies that will provide you with ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER PARTS - say you buy a brand new or have a relatively new Ford/Chevy/Import and someone hits you - you want your car to be repaired to how it was before not with some after-market parts that can bring down the vehicle's value. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL - if you ever get your car's windshield replaced - make sure it is with original glass. It was a story in Consumer Reports or something about a year or so ago. Glass is considered to be part of the car's structure now and when hit the glass send "energy" to the frame of the car. If not the right glass or installed improperly can cause to break or pop out which could mean getting throw out of the car where the glass should be. Just wanted you to know - I rather pay a little bit more for a company that will pay to fix my car right and to protect me if someone tries to sue me than have to pay big bucks on the other side to have my car or life back to normal. Good luck hunting for insurance. |

This is just not true. Try researching a little more. |

progressive gets you with a nice discount on your 10th (6 months per term) term discount too.. i'm about to shop next term for new insurance, but i need to see how much they chop off. I think my bro got 15% off (stacked) for being a long term customer which was several hundred dollars.
of course everyone knows auto insurance and such should be paid in full, since making payments equates to 24-28% APR if you add it up.. |
