We're with Allstate and we don't think we're in good hands at all. Perfect record, no claims in home or auto, yet every renewal, our policy costs a little more than before. A couple of friends have State Farm and says theirs stay fixed or drop.
I did online quotes a few years before and it was all over the board. Some higher, some lower, but none was low enough to switch at the time. So we're going to do some quotes again. Counting on the FW community to help in case I missed some insurers.
Here's some that I will look at...Progressive, Amico, Geico, State Farm, Farmers, AIG.
Do many of you others have the same auto and home insurer? I always thought it was the best savings but now I don't know if it really makes a difference.

Amica, rated number one by Consumer Reports. Been with them for two years. Insurance for house plus two cars was 2/3 of my former bill with American Family, 2nd year the payment dropped another $150. While CR rated them number one as far as their claim responsiveness, I have not had to file a claim with them.

USAA. Not always the best rates (but overall very good) but their CS is hard to beat.

No claims yet, but I've been happy with Unitrin Direct for both auto and homeowners. Prices beat the next closest quotes by several hundred dollars.

Liberty Mutual lower than Geico in NJ. When I called Geico to cancel, they found additional savings on my policy, but could not match Liberty Mutual. If they had given me those additional savings before I cancelled, I might not have left them. If you have Geico, you may want to call them and find additional savings for you.
I have Ameriprise (formerly AMEX) and they were the cheapest for auto insurance at the time I was looking in PA. I am a little miffed at them right now for raising my home owner's insurance $200/yr over the quoted price after doing "an assesment", which I have now found is quite common with them

Try Metlife.
I've been shopping for the lowest quote and Metlife is so far the cheapest followed by Travelers. Not sure about MetLife service. Travelers is okay.

I have Allstate for both Auto and Home as well. While I have been with them for going on 8 years, I have not had any issues or problems with them, with the expection of when I was in college and driving a car over 100 miles to get home for the holidays.
I am not sure if you are aware, but Allstate now has an auto plan called the "Platinum Protection Plan", with which you receive a 5% discount every 6 months on your premium. Also, for every year you do not have an accident, you receive $100 off your deductible. If you qualify, you can also have multiple accident forgiveness without your rates going up. I have not really seen a better deal on the auto insurance, but I also have not had another carrier in my short time as a licensed driver. My home policy is very cheap as well, in comparison to others that I had researched.
I hope I have been of some help. Take care and good luck!

it has also been noted in other threads that Allstate is sometimes charging longstanding customers MORE than if they came in as a NEW CUSTOMER, sometimes 50% more!
If yu are currently with allstate, try to get a quote as a new customer (if your agent wont quote it, try another one) and see if its cheaper

I was with Mercury and switched to AAA when I was able to save about $400 a year. When I was with AAA I had 2 claims, I totaled a car (my fault) and had a motorcycle stolen. My rates went up but not by much.
A year after I totaled the car I checked rates with differnt places and Travelers Ins was about $500 less than AAA for 2 Houses, and 3 cars (two drivers).
Give both of them a call to check rates.
If you have any young drivers Mercury may be the best. When I started driving my parrents were with AAA. To add me as a driver so 3 drivers and 2 cars AAA wanted about $1200 more a year. With Mercury 3 drivers and 2 cars was only about $100 more a year than with 2 drivers 2 cars with AAA.

I recently moved to CA, and I shopped around quite a bit, ended up with Liberty Mutual for my auto + homeowners + EQ insurance, they were the cheapest partly because of my employer's discounted rate with them. They were also the only company out there that would write me an EQ policy. Wawanesa is another good choice in CA.

I don't know where you live, but if you are in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois and a few other states, I can't remember right now, try Erie Insurance for your home and auto insurance.

I've got Erie in OH & it's consistently the cheapest. I've had a couple of claims on the car, and the claims service was fast.
BTW, progressive does not have home....so no discounts for insuring car & house there

I agree. I have Erie (www.erieinsurance.com/) and it provides by far the lowest rates that I could find for a reputable company. Their rates were more than half of what I used to pay with State Farm. When I had a car accident Erie was pretty good (responsive, quick inspection, quick turnaround with the check, and they tried very hard to recover my deductible from the uninsured motorist who hit me). My rates do go up a few dollars each year: they say it is due to the risk associated with insuring my make and model, but they are still the cheapest so I've stuck with them.

We've had State Farm for many years, in New Jersey, and get special discount for long-time customers. Everytime I look for better rate, nobody can beat their total auto-homowners-umbrella package.
I've never had to file a claim with State Farm, however, so I've not tested how good they really are. I know they don't have a great reputation. But every time I'm tempted to switch to someone with a better reputation, I look at the rates again and stop myself... Who knows what I'm really buying.

So far we got several quotes for auto and home, auto is where I'm seeing the greatest differences, home is within ballpark. Amica is highest (home+auto), even higher than what I'm paying total with Allstate. Geico is the lowest 44% less than out we are paying for auto. The rest (Progressive, Travelers, AIG, Unitrin, Liberty Mutual, Safeco) are all clustered at 35% less my current rate.
Waiting for Farmers, State Farm, and I'll check into Erie. Of all the listed, Erie and Unitrin I've never even heard of remotely. I'd definitely recommend people look at their policies and question the rates. My family all have the same agent so when we start moving, he'll lose 6 policies in a blink of an eye.
Does everyone's rates creep up each yearly renewal or does it stay fixed or drop (considering no claims)?

Erie's been around for like 80 years. One of the reasons why you haven't heard of them is that they do not advertise. Because of that decision, they are able to keep their rates lower than other insurers. However, you can check their J.D. Power numbers as of late and you will see how they are usually number one or at least top five.

My entire family has Erie-through the same agent. We've all had great service (from corporate as well as the local agent). If you have a spotless driving record and good credit it will be hard to beat erie overall. Being a cheapskate, I've compared MANY options, what I've found is that Erie is cheaper than even most poorly rated companies...and Erie is very reputable.
The only claims experience I've had so far was for a broken windshield-I was driving down the road, rock hit windshield, cracked it. I called my agent from my cell, and within 10 minutes of the crack I had an appointment for someone to come to my house to "repair" the crack. After the repair I wasn't happy with the fact that it was still visible so I called my agent again-someone came to my office the next day and replaced the windshield on the spot...total cost=$25 deductable!! No rate increase associated with that. Also, I've had 2 speeding tickets in the past 3 years and have seen no premium increase thus far-the most recent was just registered with DMV about 4 weeks ago--so we'll see after Erie catches wind of that.

I have auto insurance thru progressive and home insurance thru a small local insurance company. They actually come inspect your house to determine if they will insure it or not. I just got a quote from Geico that was $400 higher/year than my current co.
I use Horace Mann. They specialize for people in education. Have never been able to beat their rates.

Liberty Mutual will give an additional discount (10%) if you are a Penfed member or with a few other association affiliation. I recently requested a rate quote with AARP Hartford for auto but Liberty Mutual with the affiliate discount was cheaper.

I've been with State Farm since I started driving (late 80's) since my parents were with State Farm. I have Auto and Renter's Insurance through them and have never had any problems. Had a car totaled by hail while I was in college. Had an accident in the late 90's. No problems with them. My insurance went up by less than $5 when I moved to NC from Texas but since then has dropped due to discounts. In addition, I have a guaranteed renewal clause...so they can't cancel me. That doesn't mean they can't raise my rates extremely high if I end up making too many claims, but I'm guaranteed renewal.
we switched from traveller to allstate last year, that was the lowest we could find at that time. so far so good. i'll try that 5% per 6 months thing as previously mentioned.
i have another question, how do you guys get ur quote? local agent, online, phone, or through 3rd party search? did you notice any difference?
I've been using American National for both my homes and cars for the past 8 years. I haven't asked for much out of them (one claim for a cracked windshield, which was fixed promptly). I haven't found anyone that could beat their auto rates, but the real draw for me was their homeowner policy. WAY cheaper than the rest. Two of our houses are in florida. Post Hurricane Opel, most insurance companies wouldn't even touch an older house, let alone give you a good price. I will say though that they're not much in the Corporate level lines of communication, and for a period of time we were shuffled through a number of different agents.

Keep an eye out for Allstate to see if they will bump the rate on you. We've been with ours ~10 years and each year was a little increase each time. Regarding quotes, I did the online ones through each company's site. I find that if the company requires a local agent, it is hit and miss because each one will be different and you're better off checking into relative's/friend's agents instead of blindly searching for one. Haven't done any quote comparison sites yet.
USAA is freakin sweet! USAA insurance is also available to a select group of individuals, military members, spouses, and dependents. USAA's motto is also, once a member always a member. If you left for one reason or another in the past, it would pay to check with them. A friend of mine dropped them 20 years ago, called them on my insistance, wife worked for State Farm, and saved a ton of cash, can't remember how much exactly. They switched over to their Life Insurance too, the first insurer to switch over to the new actuary tables too when they were updated a couple of years ago.

Depends on location... MEEMIC if you can get a referral (rose) from an existing member (Michigan or Wisconsin teacher). I haven't seen anyone come anywhere close yet. No advertising costs, only select group of consumers, and backed by teacher's union - all keep the costs way down.

I am looking for a way to become a member, similar to the way I became a member of PenFed.

PenFed's eligibility requirements are similar but a work-around way to eligibility there is just to join another organization, which then qualifies you for a PenFed membership. Does USAA have anything that's similar that would allow me to get insurance through them?

I know that exceptions do exist though! For instance, State Department specialists are eligible for USAA membership even though they are not listed on USAA's website.

I've been with many insurers over the years. I think the whole car insurance industry is a big scam (less than 50% of the premiums is going toward claims, the rest is overhead and fat management compensations), so I'm always looking for a better rate. Here's my personal rating of the insurance companies I've dealt with over the last 8 years. This is just my subjective rating, so YMMV.
2 drivers, age 30-40 2 cars, 1993 and 2003 model years No accidents, no claims Liability coverage only
State Farm - VERY expensive but decent service
ALLSTATE - expensive, poor service, many horror stories on the web
GEICO - one of the cheapest, 24/7 service. Was with them for 4 years but they weren't lowering my rates. Now 2nd best.
AMEX (now Ameriprise) - BEST DEAL RIGHT NOW. Been with them for 2 years now. Got an unbelievable quote on their site and they stuck to it. Paying about 20% less than at GEICO and get more coverage.
AMICA - Used to be good but now requires FULL coverage on at least 1 vehicle. Dangerous precedent. Hope the others don't follow suit. Last thing I need is higher premiums for coverage I don't want.
Also got quotes from ESURANCE, TRAVELER's, Progressive - rates were way too high.

Wawanesa and Ameriprise, followed closely by USAA pretty much own CA Auto, On the otherhand CA insurers offer up to 30% multi-line discounts for grouping your home / auto.
I hang it up when you tell me you are with those companies haha
Progressive is a turd for CA
CA does not underwrite credit on either home / auto, neither does MD to my knowledge. In all other states your insurance score plays a huge part.
