5.15% APY savings guaranteed thru 2/28/07 Cambridge Savings Bank (Boston area, don't know if you have to go to branch or can open by mail)
link
I had a similar account with them a few years ago and they are a good bank to deal with. I went to a branch to open but not sure if you have too. I was able to close by mailing them a letter and they sent me a check which included interest right to the last day. They are a decent size bank at just over 2 Billion in assets, Bankrate gives them 4 stars. Also they have DIF insurance so you could put over FDIC limits in. Might not be a bad Idea to open with $25k, if rates suddenly dropped you could add to this account and get that 5.15% till 2/07
EDIT: Apply by Mail I just remembered that my brother opened an account with them soon after I did and he did by mail. One thing I remember about them is they had a great web site and that was at least 3 years ago
csr stated you must live or work in MA to open acct. (also noted by bidhere23)

Quicksummary has been updated.
Please note, I have bumped the minimum rate to 5% as the general "cutoff" for discussion in the current rate environment. |

That must have taken some time with the very active couple days of increase we just saw. Does seem to a good time to be in cash. Got my first 6%+ CD yesterday. 12 month 6.10%. Hopefully more to come. Also my Libor based account set it's new rate today at 5.35% giving it an APY of 5.46% |

Just opened a savingslink at Countrywide. Pretty smooth process. Decided not to wait until external accounts were added and fed-exed a check on Thursday. It was signed for yesterday and shows in the account this morning. Trial deposits haven't even appeared yet in linked accounts so I'm glad we funded by mail.
It seems as if this bank is winning the rate war for now, though I hope my other banks will follow. |

Metro CU here in MA. They are offering a 12 month at 5.75% I went to open and got a nice surprise. You get a 35 Basis point bump If you also open a checking account that has no min balance and only requirement is you don't let account be inactive for more than 3 months or you get a $3 fee. One check or bill payment is enough to prevent that. By doing that I now have a 12 month 6.12% APY CD. |

If I read it correctly, it's 1% regular rate so this would be good for 3 months only (but hey, another way to look at it is a guaranteed rate for 3 months). What concerns me is that Dime is not exactly very straightforward about their account offerings (on their website). |

the OP of the Dime Bank discussion seems to be doing OK and no reports of problems on the promo |

True, I just noticed. But as far as I'm concerned, that thread never went anywhere. For the mailing list promotion that was available a few months ago for 6%, I don't know if many people actually got an offer (maybe locally targeted?). I didn't see many (or any?) posts in that thread about people receiving an offer code from the list. That made me a little suspicious/paranoid about their offers. Of course, we may have just misused/misunderstood the offer in the first place. |

Would USAA's MM account meet your requirements, OP? It's up to 5.01% for >$50K, plus an additional percent for 6 months for new accounts...
Of course, this isn't a very timely post, as it closed a week ago to new non-military members....sorry about that! But then again, lots of FW members are already customers, and may not realize what excellent rates can be had there. |

The thing is that you no longer NEED a promo code. I signed up for my account today and funded it with $20K. Another $80K will follow as soon as they've completed the initial funding. |

FYI-- Countrywide at 5.25% is turning out to be very user friendly. Nice website and was able to pull money in from Citi and Emigrant with no problem. |

Note that for the following folks, it generally may make more sense to directly invest in the T-bills as compared to the $250k account: (this is valid for current yields)
1. if you itemize federal taxes, and your state tax rate is > 6.4% 2. if you don't itemize, and are in 15% bracket, and your state tax rate is > 5.4% 3. if you don't itemize, and are in 25% bracket, and your state tax rate is > 4.8% 4. if you don't itemize, and are in 28% bracket, and your state tax rate is > 4.6% 5. if you don't itemize, and are in 33% bracket, and your state tax rate is > 4.3% 6. if you don't itemize, and are in 35% bracket, and your state tax rate is > 4.1% 7. if you believe the fed will keep raising the fed funds rate
Another interesting side note is that the bankdeals guy was told that the rate is the same if the minimum is not met, so presumably you could fund the account with $250k and then go below in the future. |
