- free overdaft, if you don't use it, then it will roll over to next year
- earn 3 cents everytime you use your ATM card, plus at the end of the year WAMU will deposit the money into your account. Maximum you can earn is $250/year.
If you already have an account with WAMU, just ask the teller to convert the account for you. Edit by Moderator: Edit topic to clarify
Time to change my account. Had opened one recently with their $100 AMEX GC. Thanks OP. Free wire-transfer and checks, a really good deal for free checking accounts.
Sounds interesting, but I can not seem to find out more information on this offer (i.e., nobody at Washington Mutual seems to be aware of this new offer).

Is the 100$ promo still available? tried searching and it looked old.

This is a great feature. Much faster than ACH. This account has great potential as a funds hub.

i was told about this at a WAMU a few days ago. She also mentioned that WAMU will no longer charge you to use non-WAMU ATMs (ATM might still charge though).

I got an invite letter in the mail. I am not sure it is available to everyone.
did you signup on the phone or in a branch? If on the phone could you give the phone number so others can try for the 100$ bonus as well?
Thanks

earlier this week when i went into wamu to make a deposit I saw a bunch of promo banners advertising "something new and great coming to wamu on saturday" blah blah blah. at the end of the transaction the teller reminded me of great new features coming to wamu - naturally i asked whats up? he said he couldnt say but they were going to be great. i said ok thanks.
if the OP's post is correct, i like what i see.

I think the $100 promo might have been limited to the Chicago area. I also signed up for an account at that time. It was a pretty good incentive IMO.
There was no promo code or anything. The bottom part of the letter was a coupon to bring in to a local branch.

I got a letter for $75 AMEX Gift check if you open a free checking. There are 2 ways you can open the account: 1) call them with the promo code in the letter 2) bring the letter in when you open the account at a branch
just open an account w/ $75 AMEX gc. They mailed my checks to the wrong address, and. my atm was returned back to them. I have to wait 30 days, before I can request for a new atm card to be sent out. But this is good!, I will stop by there on Sat. to make my request in person, don't need to wait the 30 days.
this sounds good, if anyone could find a link that would be nice

I'm glad to here this. I use Wamu, becuase they were the only ones who really offer free checking without any requirements and they are locally here, so I use mostly the online banking, but I like to transfer funds now and then when i withdraw money and for other reasons.
I'd like to see some news about this or a link, instead of word of mouth. If it's avaiable to everybody by Saturday there should be something online, wouldn't you think?

Sweet! I'm moving to Orlando in a couple months and there's a Wamu 1 mile from the house. I just creamed my pants.

I just spoke to WAMU, this is in fact true, as of tomorrow.
Thanks OP, would have never known, even though i have all my banking with them.

$250 a year, getting $0.03 each time means 8,333.3 transactions? 22 transactions a day? Good luck, unless you can set this up with auto bill pay or something.
Called the guy that I opened my account up with. Confirmed the benefits from the OP. Ask to switch, and he recommended instead to open a second account and leave a penny in my current account. I told him I did not like that idea, and asked if I could just convert. He said yes, but I would lose out on my forth coming $100 gift check.
So then I called the general Wamu 800. The rep said the new account is call "Wamu Free Checking", vs "Free checking" for the old. He said I could not convert, that I would have to open a second account. I asked if there was any downside to this new account. He said no, everything was the same except there are more benefits. He said he can't set anyone up until tomorrow.

The transfer system is a welcome addition but doesn't match up to the competition.
When adding a transfer account, 2 test deposits are made - like other banks. But they take the pennies back via one debit after you verify the 2 amounts. I was aware of this from fw but saw no notice at wamu. So make sure you account for this debit from an account that is "withdrawal limited".
And my biggest gripe is the scheduling system. Your first transfer date choice is after 2 business days- e.g. Mon...Thu.
