I'm giving gift cards to some folks in the office - mostly women in their 20s and 30s, with families. Given most of their precarious financial situations, but also given that this is a gift and not welfare, do you think Macy's, Marshalls, or some other card would be more appreciated? I can also buy gift cards to the local grocery/superstore which is a very popular place to shop - kind of like a Super WalMart.

Green for generosity and thoughtfulness. I would give a card for the local grocery/superstore or Target if there is one nearby. Right now they may have less of a need for clothing/household goods (and Macy's in particular might give them less bang for the buck). If this local store is like a target it should give them a wide range of things they can spend on, from the very practical groceries to reasonable kids clothing etc.

I find that Macy's is hurting so bad that I get hilarious deals on very nice men's clothes for myself very cheap. My wife finds the same thing. However, baby/kid clothes there are ridiculously expensive still. Old Navy cards are good because the whole family can get good clothes cheap there. And the ones TYP gives you are good at all Gap-owned brands: Banana Republic, Gap, Baby Gap, ON, Piper Lime, etc.

Also, every time I've ordered Old Navy $100 gift cards from TYP lately, they have sent two $50s. That might increase your bang for the point and allow you to help two colleagues. Also, my congratulations on helping your colleagues.

are you sure it's good towards purchasing certificates at restaurant.com? My guess is you just get to choose 1 certificate from restaurant.com that's "worth" $25...in orther words you're paying 1000 points or 5x the cost of an 80% off sale.

You were right! This was NOT a good deal...

When I have ordered $100 GAP cards, they have sent 2 $50 cards, which is handy for gifts.

Indeed, I just received 2 x $50 Gap GCs today, from an order of 1 x $100. I'm happy to get them this way, but of course wouldn't order them that way (2000 more points).

Has anyone ordered a $100 Chili's gift card recently? I'd be interested to know whether they sent 2 x $50 ones or 1 x $100.

I've ordered several $100 Chili's gift cards in the past few months. Sorry to tell you that they come in denominations of $100. FYI, these are also good at Maggiano's, On the Border and Macaroni Grill.

Several of the gift card redemptions can be used at related stores. May be common knowledge for some but was news to me. I added the following to the QS:

Old Navy - valid also at Gap, Banana Republic
Chili's - valid also at On the Border, Romano's Macaroni Grill, Maggiano's Little Italy

The Land's End can be used at Sears and Kmart.

Thus, even though Sears $100 is no longer available, this is the equivalent.

Since these stores are common and carry a wide variety of goods, Lands end is often the best way to use points.

Of course, a logical question is whether this will continue since what ever led to the dropping of Sears would be expected to affect Lands End (owned by Sears) eventually.

I miss the good old days of 9,000 points for Lands End $100 cards. I used it to get a front-loading washer from Sears with that 40K TYP deal Citibank bonus offer.

I miss the good old days of fixed flight points where they paid the taxes and the prices were crazy cheap for international travel.

I missed the not so old days of SLR checks redemption levels.
