What happens to TY points related to that account if I cancel one of the credit cards(accounts)?

Nothing happens. My TYN account shows a bunch of points that are associated with accounts/cards that I no longer have.

As long as they show up in your TY account, they stay there until you use them. I currently have points listed from two Citi cards that I no longer have.

The lands end cards are now 10k points. Drat.
Plus it looks like they upped all the points to 3500 for $25.00.
At least they carry amazon. I like that the best.

That's a good question. Does anyone know the answer?

I couldn't even figure out how to check the expiration dates of my TY points from my six sponsor accounts.
Anyone?

They all have expiration dates, but most are out far enough that we never run into them.

Login to your ThankYou account.
Under "My Account", click on "Statement".
There will be a line that says "Expiring Points: 0 within 90 days View": the "View" will be a link, so click on this to see a list of your expiration dates listed by sponsor account.

Or, try this link (after you are logged in):

I got 40K from an account open promo, the exp is listed just at 12/31/2011 (for all points in the account). I wonder if that that is accurate or if I should go with the 3-4 months listed in the promo...

Which Promo was that?
I would go by the expiry date listed on the TY network but keep a screenshot saved just in case.

Wirespider, the "3-4 months listed in the promo" was about the length of time during which the points are eligible for fixed rate airfare redemption. The points will continue to be good after that, just not for fixed rate arifare (unless, of course, you take / have taken action about it).

I never heard that TY points have a separate expiration date for fixed point flight redemptions...Once your points are missed in with the rest of your TY points, how would TY network distinguish them? can anyone expand on this?

They are not really mixed in like the way you think. TY Network can still distinguish which points came from where.
If you want to find out yourself than log into your TY account and click on the link provided by downhillskier.
All your TY points and their origin with expiry dates will be displayed.

I just have them make the checks out to Bank of America, (they tried to suggest BofA Student Loans when I called, but I just casually mentioned I usually just write Bank of America), and deposit them without issues in my Bank of America checking account.

Yet something is different. I've been using TYN for about 5 years. You may be right that I haven't run into expiring points before, but admittedly this is still a strange email. Generally, TYPs expire at the end of the calendar year 3 years after the month they were earned. Points expiring Dec 31 2008 were earned at some time during the 2005 year.

I have 14,000 that will expire this year. Going to have to book a flight.

The check comes made out to the bank you specify, no other identifying info. You can pay your student loan, your mortgage, someone else's loan, or even deposit it into your checking account at that bank if you want - the check is (almost) as good as getting a handful of cash.

weird. now all my points expire 2009 or later; the 2008 expiration points are still there (my account total is the same), but no points expire this year.

Something about that email was strange. I think they goofed when they sent it out.

Are you sure the 3-4 months aren't the time it take for the points to appear in your account? It would be unusual for the points to have a variable amount of time to be elegible, and I don't recall any special restricitions on the fixed point redemptions myself.

In case anyone's interested, it looks like Citi started offering mortgage payments as a reward. The cost is 12,700 points for $100, or about $0.008 per point. Not as good as the student loan rate, but better than statement credit.

Nice, maybe Fed can ask Citi for 88,900,000,000,000 TY points for the market bailout
