iPod Nano Checking/Savings Account Bonus at TCF Bank
TCF Bank is offering a free iPod 1G nano when you open any personal or small business checking account (with recurring Automatic Payment and Direct Deposit services) plus a new Savings account. Establishing just one service qualifies for a $50 Visa Gift Card. This special doesn't seem to be listed at their website, but an ad was published in the March 26th Denver Post newspaper and is available online here.
TCF Bank has a Totally Free Checking account; however, the savings accounts seem to have minimum required balances to avoid a fee.
Some of the important small print of this deal includes:

The new savings account requires minimum opening deposit equal to the minimum balance required to avoid a monthly fee, or $500, whichever is greater. TCF has 453 banking locations in six states, including Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado and Indiana.

I heard ipod deal on the local radio too. I just got my $75 with two etrade deposit transferring and two credit card payment pulling. Also you will get 1500 points for opening account and 2500 points from referral if you put your friend name. You can order gift card or stuffs from TCF reward shopping site. The shipments are from Amazon.com without extra shipping cost. 1500 reward points is about $10 gift card or more.
Unfortunately the only way to open an account is in-branch. Nothing on-line, nothing over the phone.

Anyone know if you can do an automatic deposit from another bank (e.g. ING) to qualify? My company won't let me split my paycheck direct deposit to two banks, and I really don't want to mess with changing it to TCF just for this. Also, I think TCF has some other types of checking accounts where you get free checks. I wonder if you even have to get checks - I haven't used them in a long time, and I definitely don't want to pay for them. I'm sure an upgraded checking account has a minimum deposit.
I guess the key to all this is what the minimum term is. I don't mind parking $500 there (assuming I get get around the direct deposit issue) for a few months, but I don't want it there for a year.

Stay away from TCF for your primary bank!!!! I opened a checking account a few months ago (free personal DVD player) and a $50 bonus when direct deposit went through....
Yes, they have nice perks for opening an account, but their customer service is the worst! They run a skeleton crew at out local branch and it takes forever to deposit/withdraw at the bank. the drive-through can take up to 10 mins. when you are the ONLY car. The lobby isn't much better, I've waited for a teller for 5-10 mins. when the bank was EMPTY.
I got this offer in mailer. I went to the branch today, and opened both checking and savings accounts. I was told I need to set up automatic dd and dw in a month. But I wasn't told how to get the nano. Anyone knows?

I would have made it clear I was simply after the nano before I opened up the accounts and saw what they said...but that's just me.

That is what I've told the branch manager, who opened the accounts for me. She told me I would get it in about 10-12 weeks, but didn't tell me how. I will call back tomorrow.

I was told that after I setup my DD and automatic payment, come back and take a rebate form sort of thing to mail it somewhere to receive my Nano.. a#$#$oles... Made it pretty clear to them direct deposit would be from paypal which she mentioned as long as its electronic deposit it should be fine but i really dont know if thats true. mailed a check to myself via their bill pay and plan to stop by tomorrow to get the rebate form.. will update when i come back from there.

I'll be interested to know if the Paypal deposit qualifies as the direct deposit. I stopped by a branch to get some info, and the teller there didn't think an ING deposit would work. She thought it had to be from an employer (i.e. a paycheck direct deposit).

I love it when people take a sketchy deal (i.e. not really well defined terms or plan of action), do something more sketchy (like an ACH/EFT to fulfill DD requirements) to kind of fulfill the deal they aren't really sure they have, and then complain when the whole thing falls through.

I opened my accounts today! I also got an opening gift, a free pair of binoculars. The minimum to keep in savings is $300, but the fee is waived if you have a monthly transfer into the savings from the checking account. I set up a monthly transfer of $10 from the checking -> savings to avoid keeping $300 in there.
AS FOR THE NANO - there is a rebate form, it is folded up and printed on the front to look like a nano. When you unfold it, there are the two rebate offers (iPod or $50 gift card). For the iPod after two direct deposits and two automatic payments post to your account, you bring it in to the branch. The iPod is mailed to you. On the redemption form you need to list the source of your direct deposit AND the recipient of your automatic payment.
I don't have a scanner so I'll type out the important stuff:
SELECT YOUR REWARD! Please select ONE reward based on the accounts and recurring services established, complete this form and drop it off at any neighborhood TCF Bank location by August 15, 2006. Your reward will then be shipped to you.
New Checking (with recurring direct deposit and automatic payment) and New Savings iPod 1GB Nano Select the iPod 1GB nano when you open a new TCF Checking account and establish BOTH a third party recurring direct deposit to AND third party recurring automatic payment from your TCF checking account. Transactions must post by July 31, 2006. Also required is a new TCF Savings account which requires a minimum opening deposit equal to the minimum balance to avoid the monthly service charge, or $500, whichever is greater.
Fine print: Only one reward per household. Available as of March 19, 2006, to households and small businesses without a TCF checking account within the past 90 days. Not available with any current of previous offer(s). TCF reserves the right to cancel this promotion at any time. The value of the premium will be reported as interest income on your current year 1099-INT. Account holder is responsible for any applicable taxes. See a TCF representative for additional requirements. iPod Nano is a registered trademark of Apple Computer, Inc. Apple is not a participant or sponsor of this program. Please allow up to 12 weeks for processing and delivery. www.tcfexpress.com

I don;t think you get the ipod and the $75. IIRC, you get the ipod for opening both a savings and checking account, or the cash if you just open one.

"Transactions must post by July 31 2006" so calculate accordingly. I get paycheck every 2 weeks so my dd (2 trans) will be done by mid june. BTW the dd must be minimum $100. For 3rd party recurring auto payment I'll setup my internet service bill & Cell phone bill, which are 10 days apart.
So here is my Plan: May 5 openning of both checking accounts May 20 1st dd tranx May 17 1st auto pay May 27 2nd auto pay Jun 6 2nd dd tranx Jun 7 I'll go to TCF with filled out ipod nano form Jun 21 enjoy music on my new ipod nano.
Hope its helps

I'm expecting my plan to be: 5/19 - First DD 5/24 - Cell Phone AutoPay 6/2 - Second DD 6/26 - Cell Phone AutoPay #2 6/26 - turn in form for ipod Wait up to 12 weeks....lalala 9/18 - I better have my iPod by this date. lol
I think the form seems like we need the same AutoPay to post twice, that's why I'm waiting a month for it... I also heard that the savings must have $500 in it at one time, which makes no sense, but to be sure I'll make sure it hits that balance at least 1 day.

I was in a TCF branch location today in Minnesota and the branch manager informed me that the offer had been modified. To qualify for the free Ipod Nano you no longer need to open both the checking and the saving account, but only the checking (a $25 minimum deposit, no minimum balance, free checks, no closing fee after 45 days). Also, you no longer need to set up both a Direct Deposit and a bill pay, but only the DD, which must be a minimum of $100 each time. They didn't have this new offer in writing yet, only a branch memo that they had received from headquarters (which the manager did let me read). She assured me that the new qualifications were effective immediately and said the complete overhall of the offer details was due to a logistical nightmare trying to sort through thousands of existing TCF account holders who believed they were eligible for the Ipod. I don't know if the details can vary at all from state to state, or even branch to branch, so I would advise anyone to speak to the manager before trying this anywhere else, especially as the employee originally helping me open the accounts knew nothing about the change. Hope this helps!
I went to my local TCF in Colorado Springs, CO. I can confirm that the requirement is to open a checking account and have DD into it. (To get the iPod).
The customer service was quite good. I might even start using these guys on a regular basis.

I went to a TCF branch in Michigan today and opened a Totally Free Checking account with Direct Deposit from my payroll in order to qualify the IPod offer. The checks are not free for Totally Free Checking, however, the charge will be reversed once they receive the first DD.

anybody noticed that TCF pulled a hard credit inquiry on the opening of this checking account? I don't want to risk my credit score for an ipod nano. or is it worthy?

it might be a hard on your credit report as Citi usually does. But not confirmed as I haven't got chance to check my report since I opened the account. worthy or not? it is your decision to make. good luck!

dose anyone no how long it takes to get the nano ipod
the branch i open the account at said i had to set up an automatic payment via the website. the phone csr said it had to be 3rd party. this is very misleading to be told one thing in person and another thing on the phone. would a paypal automatic withdraw from my account work do you think? after they told me that i stopped putting my paychecks into my account...

This is still active. I opened an account at a TCF Chicago branch two weeks ago, and the pamphlet I received said the offer is for "New Checking with Recurring Direct Deposit (Or, recurring payments from two or more third party sources for Small Business customers only.)" According to the fine print, you can get the 1GB nano "when you open a new TCF checking account and establish a third party recurring direct deposit to your TCF checking account. Or, recurring automatic payments from two or more third party sources for Small Business customers only. Transactions must post by August 15, 2006."
So either there's a different program with different requirements, or the phone CSR got it wrong.
I just spent 15 minutes waiting in line at my TCF branch trying to take advantage of the new account offer where you turn in your old checkbooks at get a $1 credit per check pad (up to $10). Thought it was a great idea, but the line was really long. And I got to the front of the line, the teller took a few minutes to figure things out, and said I needed to talk to a supervisor, and the line for the supervisor was 6 people long. Lousy, lousy customer service during the lunch rush.
I'm happy to report that my TCF Bank iPod arrived yesterday (7/24), approximately 6 weeks after I submitted my paperwork at my local branch on June 9th.
I can't see any requirement anywhere that the funds have to stay on deposit for a specified period, so since I've generally been underwhelmed by their banking service I reckon I'll yank the funds and move on now in search of the next freebie somewhere...
