Since I can't find a thread dedicated to AMEX gold I guess I will ask here. What is the real difference between the various flavors of the gold cards, i.e., Rewards, Rewards Plus and Preferred Rewards. I read the advertisement on the AMEX website and they all seem to have the same earning and redeeming ratios, etc. Maybe someone who have/had the different gold cards can comment on this?

Rewards vs Preferred Rewards is the Membership Options difference. Major difference is if you use your points for frequent flier miles with the Rewards card 1 mile = 2 points, if you have a Preferred Rewards card 1 mile = 1 point.
Rewards Plus is $150 for up to I think 6 cards. This is good if you need more than 2 cards since with Rewards and Preferred Rewards you pay $90 for the first card and $35 for each additional. With Rewards Plus it's $150 for up to 6 cards. They also give you bonuses for your first year (Rewards Plus).
In general, my take is this: If you want 1:1 ratio for frequent flier miles and don't mind paying a little more go with Preferred Rewards. If you need more than 2 cards go with Rewards Plus.
But, off the top of my head these are the major differences!
Hope this helps.

Actually the Rewards Plus and Preferred Rewards transfer at the same ratio. So it seems the only differences are annual fee and additional cards.
