I did it last year when they were running the same promo. The university charges 2% to use a CC, so I netted 3%.

Its funny why wouldnt the university not accept cc's. My university is even fantastic, I pay entire tuition on cc, and then waivers are applied i get the refund in cash.

Mine doesn't accept CC's either. Sucks that'll I'll have to try to max Cash Back on electronics.

According to the CSR today, you'll earn 5% at Dell, Kohls, TJ Max, Office Max, plus some more places. Maximum $100 in Cash Back in the 5% tier can be earned ($500 in spending.)

Which is correct--max $100 in CashBack or max $500 in spending? Correct me if I am wrong, but when I did the math, it could not be be both!

Oh I've heard of it all right Bill, but Citibank turned me down (which really galls me since they're enjoying $100k of my money in an e-Savings account, and another $25k in business checking). I maintain a $30k balance on one of those rare Lifetime 1.99% Citibank rates, so perhaps they're unwilling to be more generous than that. I don't doubt they would love to convert that puppy into their 5% Dividend card. Fat chance.

I can't remember the last time I got turned down for a card (FICO 730; not stellar but not chopped liver either). This was last summer by the way. It did finally prompt me to sign up for the 5% Gas DiscoverCard though, which is better than nothing.

Uh...I don't know, my University had over a billion dollar a year budget, let's assume half of that comes from tuition from students. Assume a 2% transaction fee from the CC and you are looking at 10 million dollars in lost revenue. Businesses "have to" take credit cards or they might lose transactions to their competitors. I don't know anyone who changed schools because their school didn't take credit cards. That 10 million would provide scholarships for a thousand students. Maybe the University just has their priorities right.

If they will use that money for scholarship.
Most of the universities are more like dot com than dot edu

Or maybe they needed a new football field, or the provost wanted to go to a convention in cannes?

Remember there are costs to taking cash and checks too, depending on the merchant these can easily come close to CC transaction fees.

Absolutely not true at my school. It is great fun to bash the "dumb jocks" for their corrupt ways and all that but at the school I went to (and the vast majority of major programs I'm aware of) the sports programs are funded completely without any tuition or state/federal funding. In fact the athletic programs are net net positive to the school because direct money is donated to the general scholarship program and indirect (licensing from t-shirts and other gear with university logos but was only purchased because of the athletic events) goes to the school.

I love it when people say "oh well that will extra efficiency will go to line the fat cats wallets" but where is any basis for that fact. Like your football and vacation example, I had friend who lived in the dorms who always left his lights on when he left. His justification...utilities are "included" in the cost and it isn't like they would lower the rent if he(or everyone) turned them off. While that may be true they may analyze their profit/loss at the end of the academic year and decide due to increased cost in utilties that next year's rent will be higher. But you're right, I'm sure if I turn off the lights in the dorm then some bureaucratwill take an extra vacation, fight the system!!!!111oneondond

Right now the school doesn't take credit cards. Let's say everything else is the same but now they suddenly accept credit cards and there is an additional 5 million deficit (cut the 10 million in half due to costs of processing checks). Are you honestly trying to argue that the 5 million dollar budget shortfall will be recovered 100% from corrupt sources? It is my experience that if those exist those would be the last things to be cut for the very fact that they weren't playing by the rules anyway.

That makes absolutely no sense at all. Hey, we're corrupt and we just lost 5 million in our budget, I guess let's cut out the corruption, NOW even though we didn't do it before.

Nice rationaliztion for you wanting to game the system. Hey, I'd pay with credit cards if they took them but to say that the addition of accepting credits will reduce corrupt spending (on football fields and vactions) in other locations is absolutely silly.

I said nothing of the sort - suggest you read again.

I suggest you look a little closer at the funding of college athletics - your opinions strangely are absolutely without numeric qualification.

Two minutes on google turned up this article:

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060330/SPORTS/603300460/1004/SPORTS

This article seems to show quite clearly that student fees and govt funding play a BIG role in big time college sports.

That indystar article was excellent. I didn't know local newspapers still had it in them.

I've stopped using my Discover Card, but I signed up for the Get More promo with LNT & other home retailers. When I got my statement today, the 5% didn't come out as 5% of the LNT purchases. Does Discover not give you the 5% CB if you haven't met the required spending tiers for the year? That's the only explanation I can think of for this discrepancy, but even that sounds odd...

The Get More spending limits are completely unrelated to the general purchase tiers. What did they say when you called and asked?

Just confirming on here that it was a crock of BS, I'm gonna ring them up today...

Can I get a 2nd card and do the Get More promotion on it (and apply for it on a newly issued card)? I just paid half of my daughter's tuition today and maxed out the education 5%. If I had a 2nd card I could get another $100 off the other half.
