Mine said:BofA mailer said:We are making this change in response to market conditions, new federal laws and regulations, and the increasing costs of providing unsecured credit. There was no mention of transaction history as a reason for that.

jlgrandam said:Which product cards are getting annual fees? I have Schwab, Merrill, and BofA worldpoints cards and haven't received any notices yet.
I'm also puzzled as to the annual fee: it appears there are several levels. The rewards program, BillPay itself or the size of CL can play a role here. It can also be customized to follow the income level, who knows?

I received a notice today that BofA will be adding a $29 annual fee to a card that I only use for BillPay. The card was originally the 10% Cash Back MBNA card from ~2003 -- it's morphed a few times over the years, and it's currently a generic 1% Cash Back card. Before the change kicks in (I have until December 7 to reject the change), I might try to move the credit line to my Schwab 2% CC (which also has BillPay). MBNA/FIA/BofA have treated me well over the years, but the current crop of credit ninjas scare me.

I only have one card with BillPay -- the Fidelity 529 2% card. I haven't receive any notice of annual fee on this card. Anyone receive a notice for this card?

My notice was apparently very similar to the one pnfisher received. I used the card primarily for BillPay, but did charge some purchases to the card with the intent to preserve BillPay. Has anyone received an annual fee notice on a co-branded card (E.g. Schwab or Fidelity) or is it just former MBNA cards that AREN'T co-branded that are being hit?

I agree, it is puzzling. There appears to be a definite degree of variability.

For those that received the letters. Are these change of terms letters you are getting? Do they show up online (next to statements)?

Also, has anyone ever successfully activated Bill Pay Choice on a card that didn't previously have it? I've got it on my 2 BOA cards, my wife doesn't.

$35k in credit lines slashed down to the $5k balance I had on the card at the time. (June 09)

I lost Billpay just before BOA closed all my credit cards during an AOR. When they transferred my old Countrywide bank account over to BOA, I got Billpay back.

Judging from the article posted in this thread, it appears BofA is conducting an experiment levying fees of $29 to $99 on a 1% sampling of its cardholders to see just how high they can turn the heat before the frogs begin to jump out of the pot.

How the unfortunate few of you who have been chosen to participate in this experiment react will determine their future course.

I will be rejecting the change -- hopefully they'll lose 1% of their customer base. It would be bad if BofA determines the move to be a success, and other banks start copying BofA's actions.

73k to 10.2k which was several hundred over the outstanding balance at the time. I was flabbergasted, they actually treated me like a responsible lender should. But the lemonade was sweet, as I was so impressed with the way they acted I bought 1000 shares of stock and it has gone up a few ticks since. That was March '09.

Looks like BOA has officially stated that the new annual fee is a trial balloon for "a limited number of its credit card customers" and ranges from $29 to $99 link:

"We're testing this to see what the feedback is. In terms of any plans going forward, we haven't made any decisions," said Betty Riess, a spokeswoman for Bank of America. She said the fee is being "tested" on less than 1 percent of its credit card accounts globally, but declined to give specific numbers.

I had no trouble activating it for a new FIA cards that previously lacked it (the Schwab 2% card). Also, the ability to pay bills from BOA credit cards is readily available if you have a BOA checking account. Unfortunately, the two systems are on different screens. While both can be accessed from the BOA site, you cannot have all of your cards available on one site. (making it harder to avoid paying the same bill twice, etc.). However, FIA/BOA seems willing to shift credit lines among cards and you can put most of the line on a card/or cards on one system and use that one. Since certain bills can be paid only from the FIA site via credit card (HSBC for instance) that is the better one to use if you have a choice.

Yes, getting selected for this "experiment" really stinks.

how do I check if my MNBA card was charged with annual fee? Even I did receive the letter, probably already threw away.

You don't look at the monthly statements?

just wait and see if a annual fee shows up on a future statement, or call the # on the back of your card so a CSR can look it up... geez!
