From another thread I started before I saw this one:

Here are a few 0% intro bal transfer deals that have shown up in my local (St. Louis Post Dispatch) Sunday coupon section over the last couple months. Because they are in the coupon section that means anyone can try them, it is not limited to the specifically "invited":

1) Citi Platinum select, rate exp 1/1/03, apply by 4/19, 1-800-654-4431

2) " " " , rate exp 1/1/03, apply by 4/28, 1-800-201-1275

3) Citi Sony Card, rate exp 12/1/02, apply by 4/15, 1-800-798-2513, get 5K "Sony points" after first purchase ("enough for 10 free movie tickets, a Sony Walkman Personal Stereo, or a Playstation game"

4) ATT UniversalCard, rate exp 1/1/03, reply by 5/13, 1-800-216-1194, also get $100 in free domestic ATT calling cards (within first 90 days)

All are 0% on bal transfers with no transfer fee and no annual fee (but make sure to confirm it for yourself if & when you call!). Hope they will be of use to some (the terms of the offer will be indicated by the number you are calling, so you can ask them what they are when you call, and since it was in a newespaper I'm sure they wouldn't be bothered if you just said you got the deal from a friend and don't have the ad in front of you).

FYI I called (but haven't actually applied yet) and be aware that they have a grindingly slow application process no doubt meant to minimize how long you can take advantage of these offers: first you apply, then you get the "welcome kit" in about 1 month, then you have to fill out CCs for transfer there, and then that can take another month to process.

Has anyone seen any published ones like these yet with promo rates going beyond 1/1/03? I have been waiting for one (have a 0% promo rate expiring at the beginning of June), but after a slew of these showing up in the coupons in the spring (there wre more before these, with rates expiring 12/1, 11/1, 10/1, etc), I haven't seen any new ones for a good three weeks or more. Would appreciate it if anyone has seen a newer one and would pass it along.

Mark

new one: In the 4/28/02 Sunday coupon insert: citi Platinum Select w/ 0% bal transfer (and no fees) until APRIL 1, 2003. Call 1-800-552-4587 and endure an annoying automated system to get (what will hopefully be) a fantastic deal!

Great posts MarkM, thanks! Lead post updated to reflect this great deal.

Haven't seen this in this thread, but I just transferred a huge chunk of my student loans on to my Citibank CC with a 10K limit at 3.9% fixed rate until paid off with zero BT fee. There's a thread in the Finance section about this.

kien -- if you haven't already done it, might want to reconsider. consolidation loan rates will soon be repriced & you might have done better with that (with stu loan interest tax deductability). just a thought

alert mods

Thanks for the advise, but I cannot consolidate this student loan I have as there are obligations associated with this loan. Again, I cannot take advantage of the tax deduction as my income is over the that limit. I don't plan on becoming disabled or joining Peace Corp etc. to have my loans forgiven. I have no other alternative but to pay this loan back. So I'm just finding out ways to get the best rate I can to pay it off.

By the way, I got another offer from CitiBusiness® Card which offers a zero percent APR until March 31, 2003 (that almost 2 years). However, Balance Transfer Fee equals 3% of the amount of each balance transfer, but not less than $5 or more than $29. Essentially, for $29, I can transfer up to my credit limit to this account and get almost 2 years of interest free loan. The catch is you have to have a business. I'm self-employed, so I think I can qualify.

Not to beat this to death, but I'm still not sure you realize that the rules have CHANGED GREATLY FOR THE BETTER as of jan 1st (i.e. there will be new rules for tax year 2002, which you will file for by 4/15/2003). I also have never been able to deduct this interest, but I will be able to next year with these new rules. The key is that they have gone a long way towards removing the unfair bias towards 2-income families. Check out [this site:

<< Beginning in 2002, the new law will increase the income phase-out ranges to $50,000 to $65,000 for single taxpayers and to $100,000 to $130,000 on joint returns. >>

I'm sure this was just a typo, but just in case -- this is actually less than one year. I think the Citibank deal I posted last weekend continues to be the best generally-available one going right now ...

If I have a CC with $5000 limit , for example, and I do a BT of $3000 and I do a purchase of $1000 and my minimum payment is say $50, how much do I need to pay to avoid any interest charges (given that my BT rate is 0% and my purchase rate is,say 5% - basically non-zero)

I understand that if all the amount on my card is a BT, I only need to pay the minimum which is stated, but if it is mix of a non zero payment and zero BT, how much do I have to pay. To my mind, in my example, if I pay $1000 (for purchases) + $50 = $1050, I am OK, what do you think ? Basically, I think that $50 minimum comprises of portions of the BT and purchases both. Or another strategy could be not to use a BT card to do any more purchase till BT 0% expires.

alert mods

sunrise, for every credit I know of, you wuold have to pay THE WHOLE AMOUNT to avoid interest charges. This being becasue CCs pretty much universally apply payments to the lowest rate balances hfirst. in other words, every payment would be applied to your 0% balance transfer amount before any would be applied to reducing your higher interst amounts.

Check the fine print of your credit agreement to confirm, but I'm almost certain this is what you'll find. this is why at's always best to pay off your CC balance to $0 before doing any low rate BTs, and to not use your card for purchases AT ALL once you have done the BTs.

alert mods

Thanks MarkM.
I also confirmed that with Discover and you are right.

However, if both the BT and the rate is 0% APR, this distinction will not apply, right ?

alert mods

MarkM,

Yes, I realize that the rules have changed, but my income is over twice the limit listed there and I do not qualify for the tax deduction. I double check on the Citibank deal and it is NOT a TYPO. They are giving a 0% APR on BT until the end of March 2003 without an annual fee. I think this is only for select members because they ask for an invitation code when you try to apply for it. I got it as an email, so those who qualify for this may find it as a spam from Citibank.

alert mods

sunrise - yes, if both are 0% it doesn't matter (unless you haven't paid off the 0% by the time the rate expires, and they change to different rates then).

Kien -- OK, just wanted to make usre you knew the rules had changed. In sounds like you got a good arrangement for your personal circumstances. The "typo" I was referring to is that you referred to 0% until March 2003 as "almost 2 years of interest free loan," when it is actually less than 11 months.

Well, the Citi Platinum deal only stayed king for one week! Courtesy of this Sunday's coupon insert I hereby annoint a new "Hottest BT Deal Open to All." Call 1-800-524-8796 by 6/23 to get the AT&T Universal Platinum card with 0% until 5/1/2003, NO annual fee, NO BT fees. PLUS get $100 in free domestic AT&T calling cards ("must be used during first 90 days your account is open ... $100 promotional credit will be applied to each calling card prior to any applicble discounts untilt he credit has depleted or is expired."

I already have this card, alas (but not my wife ). They did me a great favor, somehow I screwed up on when my first payment was due & didn't realize it until the day before. I called them to find out my options ... I thought I would have to pay $15 or something for one of those "same day payment" debits to your checking, but when I told the rep that I had set the account up for internet payment, she said "well, why don't you just pay using that & I will extend your due date three days to give the payment time to get here." Mind you this was the FIRST bill under this account! Especially nice given that they could have nailed me for 25% rate plus fees (though of course I would have done same day payment before letting it come to that).

Out of curiousity, does anyone else get these deals in their Sunday insert, or is it just us here in St. Louis? I don't see that anyone has posted one of these besides me, and there have been probably a dozen of them in my paper since the beginning of the year ...

Just to reiterate the deal with Chase.
I had a CC with Chase which I was not using for the last 2/3 years. I called up to cancel, then after initial talk, I was transferred to an account supervisor who gave me a 0% BT without any fee for 12 months and he sent me a check in that regard which I can deposit in my checking account.

alert mods

May be off topic , but can anyone figure out how to charge mortgage / HELOC payment to a rewards credit card ?

alert mods

sunrise, that's a great Chase retention deal you got.

Did you pay full balance every month on that card, or have you carried balances? What's your credit limit on it?

Alas, no mortgagers allow you to charge their loans or HELOCs via CC. However, you could always do a 0% BT of the kind you're getting to pay off a chunk of them.

alert mods

Dave,

I always pay off my balances in full until now that I see these 0% APR without any trasaction fee stuff. My chase card was inactive for about 2/3 years as Verizon stopped paying any cashback ( it was a verizon card before they changed the bank to chase). My limit is $7900. But, I will update you once I really get the check and read through the fine print. Who knows they might charge a BT transaction fee, although the person on the phone said no BT fees. I think it happened because of negotiation and I said that I got an offer from some other card who was giving me without any transaction fee.

I know that traditionally mortgage companies would not allow to charge a mortgage on a CC, but, let us say a bank would allow to put some money from credit card and give rewards fot it ( like c2it), and then somehow if we can write a check from that intermediate account, then we could have paid our mortgages using that money. So, iff a bank would allow to borrow from a CC and then allow to make use of the money not electronically, then the scheme would work. Presently, if c2it would allow us to write a check to be sent to someone else without having a c2it account, then this would have worked.

alert mods

another one, not so hot, but if you already have the others -- go to www.householdbank.com, you can get 0% for first six billing cycles, no fee. But be warned, you need to use the "checks included with your welcome kit" and must be written for at least $500. So you won't get the full 6 mos, it will depend on when they send the checks to you. (this is the same at citibank, but at least you're getting up to 11-12 months there).

alert mods

Does anyone here know that if you have just opened the AT&T Universal Card(issued by Citibank) can you still apply and get approved for the Citibank Plantinum Select deal going on now??

Thanks in advance.
