Where does it say that there is no balance transfer fee? All I found was this: CASH ADVANCE TRANSACTION FEE: 3% for each cash advance, with a minimum of $5 and no maximum.

It should be noted that using a card for both purchases and balance transfer means that you pay interest on the purchases (payment go to the 0% balance transfer first).
Optimal strategy is probably to do balance transfer and then make small purchase each month (which means %.50 minimum finace charge). Utility and phone bills are very good since in many cases you can pay $1.00 each month from home (put rest on another card) and get your miles. This is less hassle than carrying the card and trying to use it each month but only for a small purchase (such as a little gas).
Does anyone know what the $100 travel certificate is? If it is $100 off of any airline ticket, it is valuable, but if it is hedged in with restrictions (full fare on an airline for instance)it may be worth much less. If this is restrictive, users of the car may find the optimal strategy after getting 12,000 or so miles is to use the card for ordinary purchases until they get to the miles level that is worth redeeming given their goals, and this would make the offer less attractive.
This offer is available through cardoffers (http://www.cardoffers.com/introCreditCards/directory/cards/details/card.asp?id=951)with a $40 bonus. There is also apparently an offer out there that gives 12,000 bonus miles with first purchase (see http://find-a-creditcard.com/airline-mileage-cards/discover-miles-card.htm) but this brings no cash payment, but might have less hassle (note the asterisk on the site though that is not referenced, and the reference to 5000 bonus miles, so there appears be some confusion as to what is really offered.
The strategy of making small payments I suggested may not work (or only with a hazzle). I made 10 cent payment to Cox Cable, partially to see if they would accept it. Discover did not credit it and I got the folowing E-mail when I inquired.
" Thank you for your message regarding the Bonus 1000 Miles. As this balance was written off by Discover Card, the bonus miles were not given. Usually, a purchase needs to be for at least a dollar.
We appreciate your business and the time you have taken to contact us today. Thank you for choosing to use Discover Card.
Sincerely, "
Legally, they are wrong (I assume) since I did make a purchase. However, fighting for a bonus is hassle even if you eventualy win.
Of course, it does appear I got 10 cents free since they "wrote it off". This was the only charge on the card and I guess they figure the expense of collecting small balances is not worth it.
You don't have to be so elaborate or cheap. If $.10 doesn't work then buy a newspaper or a $1.00 soda pop the next time you walk by a newstand or covenience store. Even at 20% interest, you'll pay 20 cents in interest and gain $10.00 in rewards for a 5 minute transaction. That works out to over $100/hr which would be worth most people's time. If it doesn't work, you got a free soda pop.
I love how people aren't willing to spend 20 cents in interest to get $10 in rewards but will spend a half hour signing up for a new bank account that is .15% higher.
