<font color=white style="background-color: #3E3E3E;">Update: Finally got my welcome letter and account number on 8/7, here is the sequence: Applied 7/23, initial deposit withdrawn on 7/28, initial deposit cleared KeyBank on 8/3, welcome letter mailed.

Haha, I do not wish to bother my employer with a new direct deposit form so I'd probably go for the CC app. My credit is awful (2 months post AoR) and this inquiry would not count by the time I would apply for credit I actually would want to get.
I'm not sure if a Nano is worth the credit hit for people with clean credit reports but it can't really hurt me at this point. I wonder if they'll revoke the offer after seeing how terrible my credit report is. If any ACH deposit counts as direct deposit, then you don't have to apply for the credit card.

Does anyone know how the banks distinguish between the two? I know this question comes up in every direct deposit deal but is the only way to find out is ask the bank?

Doesn't it just say "a" direct deposit transaction, not recurring direct deposit transactions? So just transferring some small amount via ACH, if indeed that would count as a direct deposit, satisfy that criteria?

Guessing this will only work in states listed below. Quote taken from their online direct banking site, presumes they only offer online banking to residents of states where they have no physical presence? AK, CO, ID, IN, KY, ME, MI, NY, OH, OR, UT, VT, or WA.
Unfortunately, no go in IA.
"KeyDirect® offers great interest rates directly to consumers and businesses in 37 states and the District of Columbia but not AK, CO, ID, IN, KY, ME, MI, NY, OH, OR, UT, VT, or WA. If you currently reside in one of these 13 other states, please visit KeyBank at one of over 900 KeyCenter branches or visit www.Key.com to see what rates are available in your area. Not all accounts available in all states."

Might be worth opening up a keybank platinum card instad of doing DD. It looks like you can earn 5% Cash Back for all purchases for the first three months. In addition, I believe they offer 0% BT for 12 months ($75 max).
You will earn 5% Cash Back on purchases for the first three months your account is opened. Thereafter, you will earn 1% Cash Back on purchases made during each billing cycle. Cash advances, balance transfers, returned purchases, disputed or unauthorized/fraudulent transactions, finance charges, and account fees do not earn Cash Back unless otherwise specified. You may accumulate maximum Cash Back of up to $300 per calendar year (eligible transactions appearing on your January – December billing statements) payable in checks of $50 or more only upon your request. Your account must be open and not in default to earn or receive the Cash Back. If at any time your account becomes delinquent, is closed or is in default, you will forfeit all Cash Back accrued through the billing cycle in which the account was closed, or the delinquency or default occurred. The Terms and Conditions of the Cash Back program may be changed or cancelled at any time and for any reason with 90 days’ prior written notice. Certain other restrictions apply. Please see the Cash Back Terms and Conditions accompanying the credit card. Limited time offer subject to change without notice.
I used some random address and phone number in NY, but put in my California address as the "mailing address". Hopefully this will work out for me.

Monthly maintenance service charge?!?
Watch out for this offer, may not be worth 25$ a month.

Watch out for this offer, may not be worth 25$ a month.Go to the original link in the OP, and you'll find that those minimum balance requirements only apply to non-free checking accounts.

I called a moment ago and the CSR said no hard inquiry for free checking account. FYI
Why go thru all the hassel ? why not apply for a credit card and get the nano ? Anyone know what are the requirement to be met after getting the card ?
BluePeace said: Why go thru all the hassel ? why not apply for a credit card and get the nano ? Anyone know what are the requirement to be met after getting the card ?Because you broke down the sentence in the wrong way. I just spoke with a representative and confirmed that you do need to first open a checking account, and then, either setup a DD or applying for a CC. So a checking account is a required first step. Applying for the CC would be unwise because of the hard inquiry it would generate.
