Change in AU effects on credit scores has been discussed extensively on fatwallet here. Summary: many (but not all) credit issuers are still using credit scoring models which still count AU cards, and many likely will continue to do so for a long time. For those issuers, there are still benefits to having long-aged, low-utilized, high credit limited AU accounts reporting. |

I would appreciate any constructive suggestions for updating the OP in light of the emerging credit crunch, or for recent data points that might shed light on how creditors are handling increase tactics differently than in the past. TIA. |

DaveHansen: As everyone knows, this is an excellent thread on Credit Line maximization. You are very knowledgeable in the subject matter and can create a very clear to understand yet comprehensive thread. I, on the other hand, have limited knowledge on the subject matter, although I am learning more and more. Ok. Well I was wondering if you can help me on this. There is a lot of information and threads on Credit Line utilization, although there is a limited number of threads on *Unsecured Lines of Credit. So I created this thread: Strategies for Maximizing Lines of Credit: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/finance/831996/m12317008#m12317008 I'm hoping that you and other people will help me fill this thread with good information on this subject matter. That would be great, as I also would like to contribute to this board.

Does anyone know how often Chase allows you to apply for a CLI? I spoke to two CSR's and neither of them knew. I ask because I opened a new Chase card last August. I applied for and received a CLI in October. I waited until January and applied for another CLI but was denied because I "just received a credit line increase", according to the letter they sent me. The letter did not say how often I could be granted a new CLI, and it also did not say if I have to wait from my last CLI, or my last application for a CLI, before applying for another. Does anyone know? |

connectthedot, I think the reason that your new thread didn't draw much interest is that there isn't significant tactical difference between increasing limits for credit cards and for (non-card) credit lines. In any case, this thread addresses both kinds of limits. If you are concerned that this thread is missing something useful about credit limits, or can make the case that another thread on this subject is needed, I think we'll all try to give you a fair hearing. But as it stands, most of us believe that another thread on maximizing unsecured lines would be inefficient duplication. |

TIA. Regarding AU accounts. It is well known that FICO is planning to phase out this benefit over the next year or so because of abuses (people "selling" authorized status on good accounts to boost strangers' credit scores- called Piggybacking) This has upset companies like Am3x who make a lot of money providing additional cards (sub accounts) to parents who want to help establish their kids' credit. In response, Am3x has made a shift in the date they assign to additional card holder's individual accounts. To clarify: Dad has an Am3x account since 1987. He adds Junior as an additional card holder. Junior applies for his Own Individual Am3x Card. Am3x gives Junior "since 1987" status on his own card (and reports it that way to CRAs) There is no way to predict if this will last. If your parents have long established Am3x accounts you may want to ask them to add you now. |
