I just got a new copy of my credit report and I noticed that USAA did a soft-pull just before they closed my account. Like many here, I play the BT game. So it seems like this is a case of adverse action.

Caveat Emptor

Which credit bureau did they pull the report from?

They pull from Equifax almost exclusively.

I used to be in the military and periodically get mail from USAA, but I always used to throw it out because I didn't want another CC. I called today though to find out if I was infact eligible for an account, and they told me yes and set me up online so that I could access their products.

But now, I am moving soon so I think I am going to use USAA for renter's insurance on my new place.

In any event, I noticed on my account page that it says I am still in the military, however I can update that to discharged. I was discharged in '04. I'm not sure yet whether I should update my account correctly, or if I should leave it as is incase they try to bump me...

CSR today said it doesn't matter if I have been discharged, however they want to continue to address me by my rank, unless I specify otherwise.

Does any non-military USAA member get their email subscriptions?

There is a page: Sign Up for E-mail News and Special Offers, where there are 7 subscriptions listed. I am checked on all 7 of them, yet I have never received any newsletter. I wonder if this is still one of the military perks that are not available to non-military members.

Account verifications they generally do softs on Experian.

Credit decisioning on Equifax, although they have been pulling TU for some lately.

Correct. It was Experian.

I would be very careful about establishing a policy, even to the point of asking a supervisor if it's going to be OK to start one. Technically, if your discharge date was in 2004, you're no longer eligible, unless you did something to establish eligibility before 2004, or if you for some reason had an official date of discharge that was after Jan 1 2005. Did you ever have any type of policy? Generally you have until Dec 31 of the year after you get out to start your very first policy with them. If they start insuring you and then find out you were discharged in 2004 and not technically eligible for membership, frankly I don't know if you're going to be the one out of luck or if they're going to let you slide by.

Here's my guess as to what will happen. If they don't find out on their initial checks of records (I think they compare your info to a list of servicemembers they buy from DOD through the FOIA), they will allow you to initiate coverage. At some point in the future, whether it is a few days or longer than that, they'll figure out that you weren't technically eligible to join USAA, and they'll probably just not renew your coverage at renewal time. While that would be unfortunate for you, allowing you to continue membership when not actually eligible opens them up to a lot of complaints and possibly shaky legal footing on any lawsuits brought about by anyone else who is no longer eligible and not allowed to join.

Note to OP, if you get a chance, you might want to fix the typo in : "PLEASE NOTE: USSA SAVINGS BANK IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC." Would PM you but had trouble doing so in my web browser.

By the way, good job with the thread. It's nice to see it continue!

wise words.

I called USAA to find out what would happen when I changed my status to discharged, and suprisingly the guy told me I would still be eligible because once I have a member number I am always eligible.

Well, I signed on today to pull up a quote, and I couldn't access the renter's insurance. I called and whoever I talked to said that I was given incorrect information and that I am completely uneligible for all of USAA's services (they said it nicer than that). I wish I had known more about this back when I was discharged, but its to late for that.

In any event, I'd rather find out I'm not eligible this way vs getting a claim denied when they learn I'm not eligible.

I wish there was a way still in for me, but unless I can somehow talk a CSR into it, I don't think it is going to happen...

I tried to get into my account last night and I got the same "server not found" error. However, this morning I logged in with no problem.

No problems at all this morning, but I did have this problem really really late Friday night/Saturday morning. Others at other boards are still having trouble accessing USAA this late in the day.

since they only allow 5k in transfers a day I got a letter saying there'll be a 6 day hold on a 30k deposit. Something about refunding lost interest charges.

I'll call them tommorow. How high have they permitted in the past? I need to move 100K from a non USAA bank ACH

I would be carefull about using USAA as an ACH hub to transfer money to and from other accounts. USAA has been know to close accounts from people doing just that read the old USAA thread. Many people accounts got closed exactly for doing this.

Also if you plan to keep money in USAA you can request they raise your ACH limit. I call up when I was using them as my main savings account before everyone started paying more than them and they agreed to raise my ACH limit from $5K a day to $25k a day via there web page. Btw there is no limit on ACH transfers made via CS over the phone to any linked account.
