Indeed you can't fix stupid. But hey without stupid people alot of things would get crappy for smart folks.... remember there has to be stupid people paying full price for stuff you you and I to get great deals.... that how I look at buying a car.
Fixed pricing is okay if your lazy or want a car there is a huge demand for, but for me I dont mind checking the newspaper or haggling to save thousands.
I know that a bit off topic but your right can't fix stupid, but stupid people nessary... I just wish they didnt win MY dream house and squander it all away.
Speaking of allowing morons to procreate... someone should give Britney Spears or K Fed something to make them impotent... its scary thinking of my children having to deal with their inbred spawn's celebrity status. |

I agree with the stupid remarks, but there is also some illness here. When you see problems like this no one but a therapist can help. Whats worse is without the proper help a person is bound to repeat these mistakes over and over again. Why do you think we see welfare families, children also having ten kids, and on welfare like there parents. It also takes a tremendous amount of discpline, and above all wanting to change! Some people dont want to change or are so sick they dont realize there is a problem. Very sad. |

What would you have done if this happened to you?
a.) Sell the house b.) Rent it out weekly as a vacation rental
I could see them wanting to keep the house. Everybody wants what they can't have. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for them. Of course they had no clue of what it would cost to keep up a property like that. I have a question for anyone to answer. If you decided to keep the property and rent it out, what would you charge? Monthly? Weekly? I think for me I would charge no less than $10,000 a week amd that would be just to rent the main house. But is the location of the "dream house" a popular vacation spot? |

Definitely sell the house. You could probably sell the house and buy 10 decent size homes in Texas and live in 1 and rent the other 9. Some people just don't know how to handle money these days....

They were provided with a financial advisor as part of the prize package, but of course they ignored the advice. There's a reason every other winner ended up selling the house. |

Yeah, they pay to much for utilities but having 7 cars must be fun. It has to be the familys hobie.
I would like to have multiple cars but the cost is too high. The dad seems like a deadbeat, th ewife should leave him.
Does anyone think its too creepy how he watches the boy with a video camera???? eek! |

The master suite is literally a separate building from the rest of house. I wouldn't be comfortable with my kids in that kind of arrangement either. |

And, considering that you weren't comfortable with that set-up, you, as a rational person, would sell the place and live in a house that you WERE comfortable with, right?
Since the parents are NOT living in the Master Suite (which is actually a separate house), and the dad is "obsessively" watching the kid (age 10) via a closed circuit system, I think he is more than concerned, a nutcase is more what I would call him.
Check out the dad's web-site. Its rather interesting, has links to HGTV; an ad for the house, and priced at 4.9 kk; the realtors name, phone, etc.; a request for offers (in writing) directly to him (bypassing his realtor?); links to his friend's web pages; a place selling junk jewelry; etc. The site is much like what I expected from the dad, so screwed up and incoherent, unplanned, disjointed, etc. that a potential buyer would be turned off by it. (Some of the pics do not load as the pic files are corrupted, the descriptions are "weird" when paired with the pics, etc.) Its definitely worth a look-see.
Dad's web site.
WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOAD THIS SITE WITH DIAL-UP!!!! The 1st pic is 14.7 MB and others are even larger! Small pics are about 5 MB. |

My question for the tax gurus...
why couldnt have Cruz DONATED the prize (the house) to a CHARITY now, with the stipulation he gets to live in it rent free for the next 10, 20 30 or whatever years? Wouldnt that eliminate the tax burden of the house prize, the property taxes and insurance?
Further Wouldnt the deduction for this gift more than pay for any taxes on the $250k and the SUV?
Further if this scheme is workable, why the heck wouldnt a financial planner suggest it? |

If you are referring to using a service like CarsDirect, you are leaving out some valuable information here. Women and men of minority status have been getting lower prices through these venues than if they went to haggle. This info was put out a year maybe two years ago so I wouldn't suggest that ALL women and ALL men of minority status were too lazy to haggle or check prices through newspapers. Just like not all women or all men of minority status would get a better price through fixed pricing either. Just try not put everyone into one category who does their business differently than you do, insult them, just to make a point. It's not necessary. You could have made your point easily enough without it and still have made a valid point. </blockquote> |

He'd still have income of the value of the prize, which could be partially offset by the charitable contribution deduction. There are limits on the deduction. I believe it's 50% of AGI. In the absence of other factors, seems like he could get rid of at most half the income, and the associated tax, by giving the property away subject to whatever interest he could get the grantee to give him. I'd rather see the guy just sell the property and buy something he could afford. |

But I thought if you "refuse" the prize upfront and designate it to go to charity its not considered income at all? Or do you just have to refuse it outright? |
