I bought a big time bulky item from a merchant. The item arrived with substantial damage due to poor packing by the merchant and also rough handling by the shipping company. I complained to the merchant but he denied all responsibilities and told me to file an insurance claim with the shipping company myself. After that initial contact, I was on his "ignore list" and he ignored all my phone calls, voicemails and emails. The shipping insurance claim will take months to get processed and I may or may not get anything back. Would I get my money back by filing a CC dispute here? I still have the item.

Thanks!

Do I need to tell CC that I'm filing a damage claim with the shipping company also? Will CC deny the claim if they think I'm trying to double dip?

I recently got a new credit card issued to me since someone at DHL charged a $48 charge to it.

Bank of America immediately closed the account and opened me up a new one. I had around $400 owed on that card, with $150 pending return from Amazon.com for a package I just shipped back to them.

Now I've got two questions.

1. When the chargeback goes through, will it credit my new account? Will BofA know to apply that credit to the new balance?

2. (this one seems obvious) Will BofA put all the stuff I owed back on the new card? What will happen to the pending transactions/authorizations?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What's the difference between hard and soft pulls, for the puller? Do they get different information? Or is it just their way of contributing to the system so others know you've applied for credit?

You most likely still have the same account (and thus the same history, balance, etc), they just changed the card number. You'll need to ask BofA about the credit, and any other charges that have been authorized but not posted. Most likely they will be processed just fine (you may have to confirm each of them), and any new charges using the old account number will be denied.

You can tell them, but I don't think you have to.

The reason I suggest you don't wait for your shipping claim to be denied before filing a dispute is because legally you have 60 days to do it. After that it's at your credit card company discretion whether to process it or not. (I am not 100% certain whether it's 60 or some other number of days, but the point is that there is some fairly short period after which a credit card company is not legally obligated to process you dispute) Moreover, it seems to me that the longer you wait the weaker you claim with the credit card company looks.

1. Is GROUP term life insurance the same as normal term life insurance or is it some sort of variation?

2. Can term life can be bought through section 125 cafeteria (pre-tax) plans? American Fidelity is workplace's cafeteria provider and in their brochure they talk about a "portable term life insurance policy". I'm not sure if that means that you have to have life insurance provided by your employer in the first place.

OK, I am getting paid a big check today (12/31/07) for a project that took several months to complete. My question is simple but I am unsure of the answer.

I am receiving the check tomorrow but I have the option to cash it on Wednesday (1/2/08).

From a tax perspective, do I have the option to take the gains in either 2007 or 2008 depending on when I actually deposit the check. Or do I have to take the gains in the year the check was written?
