The obvious use for this is to have a business on the side. Note that they try very hard to imply that it's for personal use without actually stating it. In other words, they DO state it's for personal use only, but don't want to discourage anyone from using it as a business account. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
What are the consequences of someone using a personal checking account for a business? Anyone know?
I do some sporatic web development contract work for a friend who has a "2nd BofA checking account" as his business checking. It was offered to him because of his advantage status. He said he's never had any problems.
On a side note, His business is retail so he deposits checks all the time that are made out to the business name. ymmv of course
Checking accounts tend to be used for multiple purposes these days - i.e. pre-authorized mortgage payments, scheduled Bill Payments, check writing, ATM cash withdrawals, and debit-card purchases. Many BofA clients would use the free second BofA account to keep their debit-card purchase transactions separate from their main account, to avoid unintentionally triggering account overdrafts or a lack of funds to pay their mortgage.
It's a clever marketing strategy since BofA knows many of their checking account clients have their mortgage payment auto-deducted - particularly if the mortgage is also serviced by BofA.

Important to some and not so with others.
This hasn't been true for me the past 7 or so times I've opened new accounts. I had a legacy Fleet student account from 2004 and have been a BofA customer ever since. I've only opened new accounts online, linked to the old ones. No hard pulls from BofA that weren't due to a CC application.
