The form to ask for a CL increase has changed. It used to be that you either got an instant increase or you got a for that explicitly stated a hard pull will occur. Now you get a simple form that asks for the increase you want and your income but abstracts on whether there is a hard pull or not. I have been reluctant to try it for concern of a hard pull. So I wondered if anyone did try and whether you can still get the instant increase now.

From 24,100 to 33,000 instantly with no hard pull.

I wasn't greedy in the CLI.
There is no disclaimer or "I authorize AMEX to review my credit report" message, so if you wanted to sue over a hard pull, I would image that you would win.

I see a lot of financial reviews coming in the future. Seems like everyone is getting a 50%~100% increase easily, a little too easily.
I was modest and went from $10,300 to $15,000 even. Nice round number for me and enough for my needs. It's my highest limit by $8,700.

Yup. I hope all the people who get hit with FRs come back to post, so that we get an idea of what the threshold is that will trigger it on the new CLI system.
As for me, I played it safe and asked for a measly $1400, just to make my CL a nice round # . Will wait and see how it pans out for everyone else before I ask for more.
I increased my CL from 28.4K to 32.3K, a 3.9K increase

I'm not sure if I had requested a CLI from AMEX in the ~3 years that I've been a cardholder until now:
Previous CL: $3600 Requested CL: $7000, approved
I think they started me off with $500 (Blue for Students) on a very short credit history. I expected to get turned down for this CLI request since they bumped my CL from $2500 to $3600 a month ago.

I think this is similar to the old one, they just changed the semantics so that you have to ask for X to get it, rather than offering it to you. Although given the magnitude of increases reported thus far, perhaps it just uses a very generous formula that takes into account your income, credit score, and past history.
More importantly- has anyone been denied at all? (I went from 10500-13500) didn't want to push it since this line is 11months old and started at 2k
Should I be concerned that I got an email stating:
Dear HKnight,
Thank you for your recent request for a line of credit increase on your American ExpressÒ Card Account.
We are currently processing your application.
You will be receiving additional communication regarding your application.
Thank you for applying with American Express. Does this mean my electronic approval is subject to human review, or is this just their standard form? The computers already increased my CLs.

Requested for 1400 increased, instantly approved. Which is nice, since I just got an increase of 1600 last month with the old CL increase button!

It's worth noting that if you ask for too much, the system will make a counter-offer. I tried asking for 25K on a 15K card, the system offered 21K which was accepted. I tried 21.5K on another card which had the same limit and was opened at the same time as the first card , and I was again offered 21K, so it doesn't seem to matter if you ask for too much, at least as far as getting approved for the CLI goes. FR might be another issue.
I am just wondering what the points of asking for so much credit limit which you probably don't even need from Citi, Chase, AMEX, etc. Then wouldn't it be harder for you to apply for new credit cards (especially those give you sign up bonus such as points, miles, cash, etc.) since you already have too much credits?

To reduce your overall credit utilization and enable larger BTs from individual credit issuers.
The more available, unused credit you have, the lower your overall total utilization will be. Which results in higher credit scores, thus allowing you to get approved for more cards.
This becomes especially important when you start pulling out large BTs. The more total available credit you have acts as a buffer to keep your utilization down.
And yea, you would eventually hit a "credit ceiling", when taking into account the ratio of your income to your total credit available with individual credit issuers. But with so many credit issuers, you have plenty of options available if you hit the "ceiling" with one.

I tried to go from 23k to 40k and got the response below. I wonder what will happen if I don't send the stuff in - I entered my true income, but it's just a huge pain (and some expense) to send in complete copies of tax returns for my wife and I (separate returns during that time) for the past 2 years.

Thanks Charlie! That's exactly what I meant "credit ceiling". Say if I already hit the "ceiling" with Citi, Chase, or AMEX. But when there are new card sign-up bonus from Citi, Chase, or AMEX, they will most likely deny my application. That is why I don't like to push my credit limit too high with them.

Tried on my Wife's Clear which was converted from a blue student about 6-8 months ago. I had tried many times under the old system, but never recieved an CL increases. Asked for 10k from the existing $500 limit. She does have a 14.5k limit on her SPG.

I have a AE Blue. The original CL is 2k and I requested to 35k today. It did not give me the Instant approval but said I would get result within 7-10 days in mail.
Does it mean I did not get the higher CL? Would it affect to my credit history and would it be a hard pull?
