Sorry for not linking. I tried my best

Hi, traderking. Here's the link you provided: AirTran Link. (Updated: This is the fixed, working link. Thanks, goofygrin.)

For future reference:
To make a link appear in your post, when you're creating the post look for the "http" button at the top of the text entry box. It has a small image of a chain -- as in "link" -- on it.

1. Copy the URL (web address you want to link to -- like http://promotion.suntrust.com/airtran/).
2. Click the http button.
3. Paste the URL in the pop-up that appears, and click 'OK'.
4. Type the text you want to appear as the link on the next pop-up, and click 'OK'. (Above, I used "AirTran Link".)
5. Pat yourself on the back for helping your lazy FW friends.

HTH

Fixed "fixed link"

edit: they are giving a award ticket, not an actual ticket. Good luck redeeming that.

edit: got the link right, finally!

How?

any links? thanks

edit: they are giving a award ticket, not an actual ticket. Good luck redeeming that.

Didn't need good luck when redeeming 4 flights (from last years Wendy's promotion) to fly to my sister's when she was sick. For example, called 9PM to get first ticket for the following day, first couple of flights for next day had no space, got one for third flight and was put at top of standby list and ended up on the first flight. Airtran was great.

Saw this in newspaper yesterday and did some figuring.
My math roughly:

1. $10000 at 6% for 90 days= 600/4= $150

2. $10000 at 2.25% for 90 days= 225/4= $60 (Lost interest is approx $90) (YMMV)

3. "Typical" RT ticket at $300 - $60 in taxes= $240 (Traveler expected to pay taxes plus fees.)

4. Savings of 240-90= $150 ("Free ticket" minus lost interest/earnings)

5. Time hassle-- sign up/cash transfer/secure award ticket= 2 hours (not counted- any excess length of flight via Atlanta, perhaps)

YMMV-- can you get a much higher value ticket than $300? Flying at short notice? Avail?
6% interest on 10K is tad high for savings account, low for other types.
Flight times/routing? Check planned itinerary--thru Atlanta from East to West Coast?

+++++++++++

So to me this is worth about $150 with 2 hours of work plus another two hours on the plane each way. Please point out the inevitable mistakes in this calculation. Otherwise, I may do this.

Edit: Instead of above (DC-Phoenix-- RT) with 21 days in advance, I then picked a more complicated RT flight-- 7 days notice and from large market to small market-- DC to Boise Idaho- deal would be worth about $400. (Still don't know about availability). Plus I am assuming this additional requirement for a checking account is "free"-- I have to check that)

++++++++++++++++
EDIT 2:
Checking account:

Not a catch (I think)... CSR says as long as you keep $1.00 in checking and 10K in the Prem MM the checking account is free and you qualify for the ticket. (Please do not flame for contacting the CSR- this is not a "sneak it by" "too good to believe" type of deal)

Requirements of Smart Solution Plus checking account

The minimum deposit required for opening this account online is $100.
$5,000 Minimum Daily Collected Balance5 (I am told this includes the PMM) or $15,000 Total Relationship Balance6 or any SunTrust First Mortgage
No monthly maintenance fee if balance requirement is maintained
$14 per month if balance requirement is not maintained

Well I have sunk an hour of time trying to figure and write this up. Ha Ha.

Roll Tide Bamadad!

When I used Airtran rewards I only had to pay the Sept 11 fee which was about $12 for a round trip cross country flight. I am considering using another one to the Bahamas...I suspect there will be more fees for this one, though I am not sure yet.

corrected some undeserved negs from "kennybrowneyes". This can't benefit me as I don't live in one of the states, but it's as valid as the other freebie with deposit deals.

No MICHIGAN ?

Several points of mention.

1. Most people can't get 6% on 3 months deposit of $10,000. It is more realistic to use 5%. Thus, the lost interest between 5% and 2.25% is about $65.

2. Most free tickets only cost "security fee"

3. When you collect interest from the financial institution, you will pay the government based on your tax rate, 10-35% as well as any state income tax on the interest.

4. Getting free flight credits "might not" have any tax ramifications. Unsure of this.

5. Airfare prices are heading up daily. A free ticket used next year could be worth more than this year. May be worth $350 on a national flight.

So, it seems a $65 loss of interest will get you a national flight on Airtran (plus security fee, etc.)

Thanks good points. I made a couple of edits before I saw you post- more expensive tickets on large to small market flights. Your big point to me is number 2-- to get a free ticket with only the security fee-- I didn't know that. The small print of the deal said the traveler pays the tax, but since the award points are dumped into the account-- AirTran would apply its normal policy, whatever that is, to the tax. Thanks for the info.

Edit:

Brokestudent says it is only the security fee on AirTran, which is great. Thanks for the info.
yes the small hassles in withdrawing funds (probably take another 5 days or so after the 90 days to get it out of Suntrust and insure the award points posted), a little bit of tracking taxes, breaking off the inevitable junk mail.

Thanks, kamalktk. I saw the red brigade run through here, but couldn't figure out why he negged everyone's comments. Thanks for making us whole, though.

Seems like these vouchers are selling for $150 to $200 on fleabay. I've got a couple from Wendy's I'm looking to unload.

Starting to see a lot of advertisements for this deal.

Everyone should note that there is an account close-out fee if you close your account within 6 months. It's $20.00 or $25.00, depending on whether you close the account by phone or mail.

See below for the details...

Customer: Hello - I was interested in opening a Money Market Performance Account.

Jody: Thank you for chatting with me at SunTrust.com. How can I help you with a Money Market account, Customer?

Customer: I am not a SunTrust customer at this time.

Customer: How do I go about opening a Money Market Performance Account?

Jody: I will be happy to assist you. In order for me to best answer your questions and/or make appropriate recommendations, I need to have a better understanding of your needs. May I ask you some questions?

Customer: Yes.

Jody: Thank you, Customer. If you don't mind me asking, what brought you to SunTrust?

Customer: I was referred by a friend who told me about your AirTran Airways offer.

Jody: Okay, Great. First let me tell you that in order to open the Premium Money Market account with $10,000 for that offer, you must first have or open a Smart Solutions Plus checking or a Signature Advantage checking account. So let's discuss the checking account first.

Jody: What is the average balance you would maintain in the account?

Customer: I prefer to keep a very low balance in my checking account, as I prefer to have the bulk of my money in a money market account, to take advantage of the better interest rate. So very little.

Jody: How much would you like to deposit, total for both accounts?

Customer: So I take it I have to deposit $10,000 or more in the money market account and at least something in a checking account to take advantage of the offer?

Jody: You will need the $10,000 for the money market and $5,000 for the checking account. How much total new money do you have that you can bring to the bank for the promotion to be applicable?

Customer: I have > $30,000 available to deposit. Is there any checking account I can open with no minimum balance to take advantage of this offer?

Customer: I would prefer to put money in the money market - not a checking account.

Jody: Wonderful. One of the requirements, however , is you must have the Smart Solutions Plus checking account. As long as you have $10,000 or more (you may keep very little in the checking account to qualify).

Jody: I would be happy to provide that information.

Jody: You can actually have as little as $1.00 in the checking and all the rest in the money market. Let me give you the details.

Customer: OK.

Customer: Great.

Jody: First the checking account details........

Jody: Thank you for waiting. I recommend the following account for you. The Smart Solution Checking account is the ideal value for those who seek one low price ($9) to cover all their checking needs. This account offers unlimited transactions at SunTrust branches and ATMs in addition to two free Non-SunTrust ATM usages per statement cycle...

Jody: You also receive free Identity Theft Protection, free checks, free Classic Visa Check Card, free Internet banking with Bill Pay, and a loan discount of 0.25% on any future SunTrust loans you apply for...

Customer: Is there a free checking account product. I won't pay for a checking account...

Jody: I apologize on the Smart Solutions Plus would be $14.00. Let me continue then I will clarify all for you.

Customer: OK.

Jody: You even receive up to 5 free custom savings accounts and receive special rates on a money market account...

Jody: Thank you for your patience.

Jody: The promotion requires the Smart Solutions Plus checking account in conjunction with the Premium Money Market account.

Jody: The balance requirement for the checking account is a total banking relationship between the Money Market and the Checking

Jody: of $5,000 between the two accounts must be maintained in order to have the maintenance fee waived from the checking account.

Jody: However, the money market requires $10,000 minimum opening deposit to qualify for the promotion.

Customer: So $10,000 in the Premium Money Market account and $1.00 in the Smart Solutions Plus checking account would be no maintenance fee?

Jody: That is correct.

Customer: Are there any other fees, for closing an account or for any other reason?

Jody: One moment while I now check the rate on the money market for you.

Jody: To qualify for the offer the money must be maintained in the money market for 90 days. However, to avoid any fees for closing the account early you will want to keep your account open at least 6 months.

Customer: OK.

Customer: How do I go about opening this account?

Jody: Okay, let me give you the details on the money market and then I will be happy to assist you to open your accounts.

Jody: The Premium Money Market Performance Account is a five-tiered money market account that is designed for those clients looking to earn a higher yield on their higher balances. This account allows for our highest yields on deposit accounts and as the balance increases, so does the rate you earn! This is an account for individuals who want low risk-tolerance, liquidity and a competitive rate of return. Also, this account allows for limited check-writing abilities. The current interest rates are as follows:

Jody: $25,000-$49,999 - 3.20% base rate and 3.25% APY

Jody: This account features no monthly fee $15 if the required minimum daily $2,500 balance is maintained. You also have 6 free withdrawals per month (3 of which can be made via checks). There is a $15 fee for excessive withdrawal per occurrence. An ATM card is available with this account, allowing you to access your funds at ATMs. You benefit by having increased convenience and more flexibility in accessing funds as well as the higher rate tiers for the higher balances. What are your thoughts on these 2 accounts?

Customer: What is the rate for $10,000?

Jody: That rate is 2.23% with an APY of 2.25%. I can take your application in the secured chatroom. Let's get started! Ok, Customer?

Thanks dippy943 ... so just leave $10K in each account until you get your A+ reward points, then drop the balances down to $2500 and reinvest the other $7500 elsewhere.

Dunno, but it beats buying $80 worth of empty cups or dumpster diving. I'm in.

Man dippy943, at first, I thought you typed up a phonecall. I thought you were a superhero.

If I'm reading that right, the checking requires $5000 in the combined accounts in order to eliminate charges.
