Effective June 1, 2007, you will not earn rewards on any cash you receive in connection with a purchase at the point of sale through our cash-over feature. However you will continue to earn rewards on cash you receive in connection with purchases made at select warehouse clubs (.25%, not 1%) or discount stores. Does not apply to titanium card.

They did it because they could not differentiate the difference between the purchase and cash over the purchase (This is a guess, not a statement of fact).
I'm hoping that if they are now able to tell the difference, that they will at least up the amount we can get at the grocery store. I'm tired of doing separate transactions if I need more than $50.

it should be easy to do based on my supermarket receipt:
I appearantly have missed a gigantic loophole. You can get $50 over your total by doing what?

It is hard to keep up with the "prestige" inflation. Green, gold, platinum, titanium, I don't think they mean that much anymore.
Don't worry, you're not missing anything it's pretty much useless save for the few occasional deals, the reason it's not affected is because it doesn't pay any CashBack, lol.
I only keep it because I've had it a long time, decent limit, & sometimes B/T offers.

telling the cashier to pad your total by $50. (see my example above.)
and it's not a loophole. Discover allows it for up to $50. anything over $50 gets rejected.

Jeeze.. never knew that you could do this with any credit card. Besides Discover, are their any other cc issuers that allow this?!

Actually no the amount varies by retailer - at least in the past nob hill was $30, safeway was $50, and costco was $60. Safeway has a nice little option that pops up on the screen.
Been very nice, will miss the rewards. Will probably still do it now and then just the for convenience and tiny time value of money it provides.
BTW, does the OP or anyone else have a reference for this change?

it should be easy to do based on my supermarket receipt:
Total: $4.86 Credit $54.86 Change $50.00
Sure, it shows that on your receipt, but Discover never got your receipt, they got a transaction total. I assume that they will now require an upgrade to something like what Walgreens has where the CC can see what's on the receipt (or at least the category for what's on the receipt).
I wonder if this also means that we won't get rewards for gift card purchases, lottery tickets, alcohol, etc....

Yeah...if you switch to titanium be assured that there will be no rewards at all...LOL..

You were able to leave a tip at Safeway?? Was that for the bagboy??
Just being sarcastic. I know that it's becoming more common for merchants to have terminals capable of transmitting the breakdown of the transaction in addition to the transaction total. That is why I am now wondering if we'll start to see gift cards and other "cash equivalent" type transactions excluded from the rewards calculation.

How did you find out? Ddid they mail you something? No TAC change letter here...
manuel said: BTW, does the OP or anyone else have a reference for this change? I received a little booklet in the mail from Discover; the top says "CHANGES TO YOUR CARDMEMBER AGREEMENT", and on page 3 under "CHANGES TO THE CashBack BONUS PROGRAMS AND MILES PROGRAM" it has the exact words in the OP except for the "(.25%, not 1%)"

How much money (rewards) have you gotten doing this?
vrovner said: How much money (rewards) have you gotten doing this?
I'd guess the take to be 1% of $50, or $0.50 per transaction. I get more from a $10 grocery purchase on my 6% rebate Chase card.

Is it even that much? I thought Discover was tiered!

You might get more back from your Chase card for groceries, but they're not giving money on cash. As a matter of fact, you'll get bent over by Chase if you get a CA at the register, and then charged 20 something % interest on top of that. You're not thinking I buy anything substantial on my Discover card when I need some currency, are you? You are allowed to make more than one transaction.
Anyway, rebate or not I'll still keep getting the $200 or so per year of currency I need that way.

No restrictions. My local bank has a branch right in the supermarket, that helped me get apr. $300 last year by doing this. But I'm buying with that gift certs for birthdays and such, so the real value for me is $500-$600.
Also can anyone confirm that you can still get Cash Back and it will still have a grace period, just you won't earn rewards? This is still a handy way to get hard cash.
I can't find any details on the website.

This is how it looks:
Safeway STORE $54.44 Supermarkets CASHOVER $ 50.00 PURCHASES $ 4.44
So yes, still a grace period and can be used as a convenient way to get up to $50 per transaction at a supermarket...
Sure does make sence, still a reasonable benefit; getting no fees cash AND earning rewards on it was crazy.

My purchase date, post date, and statement date were all after June 1st and I received full rewards credit.
I am now looking at my July statement. I have $5,870 in purchases and received 4,900 miles. More than $1,000 of that was "cash over" cash.
So it definitely wasn't $1=1 mile but it wasn't zero miles either. Maybe by my August statement I will not receive any rewards.
Oh well, $200 off my next plane ticket for me plus large amount of float (coupled with mbna bill-pay).
$1000 cashover each month?!
you goto the market almost everyday?!?

No, they pretty much let you do whatever you want in the self check-out isle. I found a store that will give you $100 per swipe.
Scan one item, pay for one item, get $100. Scan second item, pay for second item, get $100. Repeat.
As long as no one was behind me waiting I kept going. I now have over 20,000 miles.
I was walking out of the store with over $1,000 per visit. I don't like to freeze food so I go to the store once or twice a week.
got 1/2% for cash-over at supermarket. (Could have sworn i passed the $3k tier months ago to get 1%?)
$0 finance charge.
got 5% for gas. August update:
Still getting $ for cash over.
now i'm up to .75% for non-gas purchases?! (they never used to have a .75% tier???)
Guess tiers are now .25, .5, .75, 1%?
Edit:
NOPE on .75% tier: .25% on your first $1,500 in total annual purchases—and on purchases at warehouse clubs or discount stores including grocery stores affiliated with these stores .50% on your second $1,500 in total annual purchases 1% on purchases in excess of $3,000 in annual purchases
ahh.. some of the cash over is at WalMart (permanent .25%). so it looks like i'm at 1%
Breakeven vs 1.25% credit card (ie: capitalone): .15/1.25% = $12
so if you are buying more than $12 worth of stuff at WalMart, then the 1.25% credit card is better than cashover *IF* you are at the 1% mark. if not, then i guess cashover is better to pad your total to get you to the $3000 mark.

I'm still getting rebates on cashover at Giant Food (Stop'n'Shop) but it gets broken out at Safeway.
Breakeven vs another rebate card? I don't have another rebate card which I can draw cash from. Anyway I do it for convenience. It's less hassle than making sure there is cash available in my checking account and waiting on the ATM rebate. Also I'm in one of the two stores above 6 days a week so it's easy. So what did I buy at Giant today to get the transaction through? 8 eggs for $1.09.

I buy $1 stuff and get $50 cash over every other day at Safeway and deposit the cash at WAMU next door and earn 5% interest every month on $750 that is an extra $37.5 per year.

Does anyone know if this works specifically at HEB also? Or is it just pretty much any place that allows Cash Back on credit card transactions?
