5% get more Jan-March 2008

Toasters
Fly Swatters
Strip Clubs

You forgot
Nebulizers
Horseshoes
Taffy
Adhesives
and Condiments
for purchases up to $125.
This program is getting worse and worse, thought the CC deal did come in handy.

$20 measly dollars back? I officially declare the Discover Get More program worthless. Since gas is one of the purchases, you're probably just better off switching to the Gas version of the card instead of sticking with the More card.

I'm probably going to burn up my $400 limit on gasoline alone. I'll just forget about all the other offers.

Finally, restaurants again.

Every strip club that took Discover was coded as a restaurant so your facetious is actually true. Best part is that most places will treat cash advances as purchases. The bad part is you have to deposit 400 $1 bills the next day.

I save a LOT more than 5% all the time at restaurants.

I stay out of them

Cooking, try it sometime

Oct-Dec 2007 = football season

1-2 beers + 5% off + getting to see my NCAA/NFL team's unbroadcasted games on satellite for free < satellite/digital cable at my house per month

...wait, why am I trying to justify my spending habits based on your smug comment?

Getting out of the house, try it sometime.

does anyone know anything about the January 2008 quarter yet? I'm really hoping that one of these quarters will be school/office supplies... or could someone put together a Discover GetMore Thread so we'd know what's probably coming up for a quarter? Jusr curious.

i wonder if it's possible to change the credit card for NetFlix/blockbuster subscription to discover for these months and have it considered as movie? oh well...just curious

National City has a movie category for 3% Cash Back, and NetFlix does not seem to be included.

If I use Discover to pay for NetFlix for those three months, will it be easy for me to tell, from the statements or online info, whether they're actually including it in the 5%?

johnny98 said: I'm probably going to burn up my $400 limit on gasoline alone. I'll just forget about all the other offers.I would do that too, if I didn't already have a Chase card that provides 5% off gas. I used it for hotel stays. I can tell you though, it didn't take long to burn through that $400 cap. Better than nothing, but pretty weak.

OK. I payed the September statement days ago. When I checked the Cash Back bonus today, I was surprised...
Although I spent over $200 on gas, I got only $3 for the 5% Cash Back program
I have been signed up for this program since July. What's wrong?
Anybody has similar experience?

Did you exceed $400 already?

VivYip said: i wonder if it's possible to change the credit card for NetFlix/blockbuster subscription to discover for these months and have it considered as movie? oh well...just curiousThe Discover website says it applies to "Movie ticket and movie rental purchases are those made at merchants we classify as movie theaters, video rental stores, and online movie ticket and movie rental services". It certainly sounds like it should work for NetFlix, so I'll change my payment method for now. Conveniently, my account is scheduled to be charged on Tuesday.

Likely with a low enough max to make it almost useless.

Thanks for the info. I will be using my card for Air and Cruise during those months. Even if it's a low limit, I can still charge some of it on that card.

I got email from Discover in response to my question about NetFlix:

"With regards to your question about NetFlix, it does qualify for the 5% CashBack Bonus Reward"

So if I don't get it, I have something to back up my complaint.

Just FYI, my NetFlix monthly charges show up categorized quite generically and with nothing to do with movies. IE: something like "Internet Marketing Service" charge type.

Therefore I would be very skeptical that Discover would indeed qualify such charges to receive 5% cash bank in their current GetMore promotion.

UPDATE: I checked my Citi MasterCard online account information to get the exact NetFlix merchant category, from my most recent statement (September 2007). Here is how it reads:

Merchant Name: NFI*WWW.NetFlix.COM/CC 8005858131 CA US ,000
Merchant Category: DIRECT MARKETING-CONTINUITY SUBSCRIPTION

Thanks VivYip

I have updated it in the post.

When I last got charged by NetFlix (May '07) it showed up in the Merchandise/Retail category, the same as my current Blockbuster charges.

Update:

December 2007
Grocery Stores --
Up to $200 in purchase

Thanks Empty's post

Up to $800

Updated on 1st page.

The 5% on restaurants doesn't seem to add up correctly for me. Spent 100$ at restaurants last month. Only got $2.50 as CashBack - was expecting $5.00 because of that Get More program (or whatever it's called).

Anyone else seeing this problem on the CashBack calculations by Discover?

Called yesterday. Signed up for both Restaurant/Movie (Oct-Dec) and Grocery (Dec) Get More :

  • Restaurant/Movies transactions 3 days prior to Nov 11 statement close posted to Dec 11 statement instead
  • None of my grocery Get More's posted to Dec 11 statement

Discover CSR (AZ call center) asked me to wait til next statement.

Same response to me too from the AZ customer service center! It all sounds very fishy... I'm not happy about having to wait 1 more cycle and remembering to call again...Will see if others have any +ve findings to report. if not, will suspend using Discover.

thanks!

I've run into the same issue when I've purchased items close to the end of the billing cycle. They won't post the 5% back until the next cycle. There has not been an instance for me when it has not posted on the next cycle (but I also track it on a spreadsheet just in case).

Just got this in my email:

Here's what's coming up for 2008:

Apr - June: Home and Apparel

July - Sept: Gas and Hotels

Oct - Dec: Restaurants and Movies

Thanks lhendricks92
I have updated the first page.

It looks like a copy of all the category from 2007
I guess many people miss the tuition one.

Never mind, apparently I went over the $200 eligible purchase limit.

Saw this today, for the month of Feb 08 get 5% off restaurants, florists, chocolate shops, bookstores and pet stores, up to $200 ($10 of rewards)

naas said: Saw this today, for the month of Feb 08 get 5% off restaurants, florists, chocolate shops, bookstores and pet stores, up to $200 ($10 of rewards)

Bookstores huh. I wonder if that is going to include Amazon.com again.

naas said: Saw this today, for the month of Feb 08 get 5% off restaurants, florists, chocolate shops, bookstores and pet stores, up to $200 ($10 of rewards)Cool. It's the time of the year that I get to discover (no pun intended) how many restaurants do not accept Discover.

I noticed that a restaurant meal I charged on the card on 12/31 showed up on my bill with a transaction and posting date of 1/2, conveniently too late to qualify for the Get More bonus from last quarter. I just emailed them about that. Seems strange that it would have the wrong transaction date. Anyone else have this problem? I also had my NetFlix charge get posted that day, but they really did charge it then, I just forgot to change the card I billed it to.

Mid-to-high end restaurants will usually take Discover and American Express. Lower end restaurants will only take MC and Visa.

johnny98 said: Mid-to-high end restaurants will usually take Discover and American Express. Lower end restaurants will only take MC and Visa. That's actually not what I have found. The lower end places I visit are chains and they all take Discover. The fancier places, which are not chains, usually do not. And acceptance of AMEX and Discover are not at all tied together from my experience.

This is quite common especially if you charge it on a weekend (12/31 was arguably in the middle of a 4 day weekend). I usually shop at Safeway multiple times over the weekend and all the charges from the weekend show up on my CC bill either monday or tuesday at the same time.
