I think you are incorrect. The total combined fdic insurance is 200k. Thats what the rules say and that is also what the fdic estimator tool gives for a result.

Misleading!

FDIC insured limited is per category. The accounts are held in different categories such as: single accounts, retirement accounts, joint accounts and revocable trust accounts...

So you can have 1 your own single account $100k, your couple's single account $100k and 1 joint account $200k for up to $400k insured in one bank. If you open anoter category account such as retirement account, you can have insured higher than $400k.

so FDIC it is insured....how about roommate got your password and somehow got your money or hackers or however you lose the money...is it covered? for FNBO, ING and ED?

No that is not covered by FDIC at any bank. FDIC only insures against loss of deposits if an FDIC-insured bank fails.

I agree with Hoops77 and Hudendak. If you understand how FDIC coverage is calculated you won’t have to rely on the tool.

FDIC insures accounts, in federally insured institutions, at a minimum of 100K per account category, per person, per bank.

The categories* include single accounts, joint accounts, certain retirement accounts, and revocable trust accounts.

This means that if a person has funds in each of these categories at an insured bank, he will have at least $400K of FDIC coverage at that bank.

Since FNBO only offers two of the categories of accounts, namely single account and joint account, the maximum amount of coverage per person would be 200K.

For husbands and wives that pool their finances, this would mean 200K for the husband and 200K for the wife resulting in a combined FDIC coverage of 400K at FNBO.

*Maximum amount of coverage by category:

Single accounts = 100K per person
Joint accounts = 100K per person
Retirement accounts = 250K per person
Revocable trust accounts (POD, ITF, ATF) = 100K per person per qualified beneficiary

Is it a joint account ?
Insured $200K ?

yes joint account with wife..i have one more account ( single ) where I will push another $100k

I am not concerned with this bank, but FYI I think your coverage is $100k for you and $75K for your wife.
Believe they would only pay $100K per individual so 150/2 leaves only 25 covered in the second account.

I stand corrected

I will be writing one more BIG check to almost empty the NEA account...There are no minimums or penalties for maitaining less than $500 right ? I checked the link and did not find any except that the interest is much lower than 6.22 . Anyway I am planning to close it after the second check hits FNBO. Also since July 4 is a postal holiday I will mail the NEA check tomorrow ( mon ) from CA ...Hopefully FNBO gets it on Fri

I started this account about 45 days ago, have made multiple deposits and have been satisfied with the ease of use. The only downside would be that the dividend is taxed at the regular rates.

I noticed a previous poster was taking of multiple 6 figure accounts; perhaps an A3 preferred stock at the 15% rate or Master Limited Partnership (some double tax free) would be a preferable option?

I cleared my account today. They won't let me close it till Monday.

I can't stand the whole log in thing since I can never remember the username or passwords or security questions and I got so fedup of calling all the time that I just decided to close it.

They have the most retarded system. The point of a good password systems is one that you don't have to write anything down. This systems has so many variables that have to be met that it is impossible to remember everything without writing everything down.

Forget them.

I have a joint account and an individual account. Ridiculously, I can not transfer money between these accounts, will they fix this problem ?

Seems like you were looking for a reason to leave? I have no problems with my FNBO account as it only asks me those questions when I clear my cookies or log on from another computer (e.g. at work). My local bank has instituted a more stringent system where it asks questions every single time you log in from a set of FOUR random questions you selected. I have to think for a few seconds sometimes but that makes me feel better knowing that my account has at least another thin layer of protection.

I just think it's silly to leave over their log-in security measures. I see on 6/29 interest was deposited into my account. I'm very impressed. After the month ends, CitiBank takes something like 2-3 weeks to post and PayPal takes a week.

There is nothing silly about leaving a bank because of the log-in procedures. I had just emptied out all of my HSBC savings account because I kept having to call customer service because it seemed the virtual keyboard phase just never worked for me.... Then they had their new money promotion and I put it all back.

Now I use Roborform to fill out all my log-on screens and its made life easy.

They just sent out an email saying that the monthly statemnets are available. It's just the Fatwallet effect of everyone checking their statements.
