At California financial centers, CountryWide 1-year CDs are back up to 5.70% according to the Sunday Orange County Register. Their rates usually change on Fridays. Remember to bring something to read - just in case there's a line.

According to the ad in today's OC Register* Countrywide has increased the APY on its 6-month CDs to 5.70% (minimum $10K). Might be worth looking into before the Feds lower the rate again on Wednesday.

My 10% 3 month CD matured and I went into Bridgeview.

Their new offer is an 8 month liquid CD at 5.10%.
After establishing CD, you can add or withdraw up to $1,000 each month until term is up. Or you could choose to do nothing. Pretty good rate and option. I took half my original CD amount out and left remaining in the 8 month CD.

EDIT. Bank based in IL. Bridgeview Bank (800.794.2070). no details on website and it doesn't seem you can open the CD online either (only the standard terms and checking accounts can be opened online.)

San Mateo Credit Union is offering promotional CD rates of 5.75% for a 5 month CD, and 5.5% for a 12 month CD for new CU members ONLY. Both have $10K min. Link: SMCU. The 5 month one can only be opened in two of their branches; not sure about the 12 month terms (link: http://www.smcu.org/specials/12MonthSpecialCertificate2007.php

You are eligible for membership in SMCU if you are:

A resident, employee, or student in San Mateo County
An employee of one of our partner companies
An employee of a company that belongs to the Golden Gate Better Business Bureau or one of the 15 Chambers of Commerce within San Mateo County that we serve
A family member, domestic partner, or roommate of an SMCU member

I'm going by today to open the 5 month CD and will post an update on the result.

Confirmed that the rates are still in effect; I should note that the numbers are APY and not APR. The cool thing is that the max deposit is $100K, unlike the 7% teaser rate of Patelco which limits you to $1K.

BTW, getting a membership and opening the CD was a breeze.

Another San Mateo Credit Union special: Celebrate the First Anniversary of our Westlake Branch! - 7% APY CD

- 7-month term
- min/max $5K
- Available to new members or existing members who refer a new member - must be referred on 12/7 or 12/8.
- New funds
- Only in Westlake Branch in Daly City Friday, 12/7 (9am - 6pm) and Saturday, 12/8 (9am - 2pm)

You can only get one of these 7% CDs per member. The CD can be in the member's name only, or the member's name and someone else for a joint ownership. One SSN for member, so no joint memberships allowed. (You can't get around the one CD per membership limitation.) So if just you and your spouse, you can get a membership/CD for you and one for your spouse, with a $10 fee per membership. If you have a minor child, you can open up a youth membership, where the membership fee is waived, and open up a third CD, with you or your spouse as the joint owner of the CD under the youth membership.

See here for the FWF discussion thread.

Stanford Federal Credit Union - If you find a Better Rate...We'll Beat It!

"Because we are so serious about paying the highest yields on term Certificates, we will beat any recently published rate* of any California bank. It won't be easy to find higher advertised yields, but if you do, let us know and we'll verify the rate. If that published rate is higher than SFCU's published rate, we'll beat it using one of the two options listed below."

"There are the two ways to take advantage of this program: To reward you for your active Direct Deposits into your SFCU Checking Account we will give you an additional Beat-It bonus, bringing your rate a full 0.10% above the competition! Every member of SFCU, regardless of account relationships, is eligible for our basic program, which will "Beat the Rate" by 0.05%."

Small print made larger:

"*Published means advertised via newspaper, WWW, radio or television. California based banks only. Internet-only banks and credit unions excluded. SFCU Certificates will be opened on the existing schedule of maturities. This offer applies to new Share Certificate, IRA Certificates and SFCU Certificates at maturity with comparable terms and minimum balance requirements. Cannot be used in conjunction with special rate promotions by other financial institutions or other bonus rate programs offered by SFCU such as the Step-Up and Liquid Share Certificate."

Naturally, some of the best deals are from credit unions, which SFCU excludes. The phrase "special rate promotions" leaves some wiggle-room for them, but I wouldn't hesitate to try a good California-based bank CD deal with SFCU.
