I'll be making some substantial credit card purchases (don't worry, non-holiday related) over the next month. I would love to transfer that balance over to a 0% credit card. I'm thinking about the Citi Home Rebate Card, which I think I'll get with my good credit score.
My billing cycle for the card from which I'd like to transfer ends on January 6, 2008, and my bill is due on January 20th or so.
When would I apply for the Citi Home Rebate Card, knowing that I want to transfer the balance that closes on January 8? Do I have to wait until after that day? Will that be too late? How would I time this?
The reason I'm concerned is that the fine print for this card states that "The transaction fee for balance transfers is 3.0% of the amount of each balance transfer, but not less than $5 minimum, $75 maximum. However, there is no balance transfer transaction fee on balances you transfer in response to this offer." I really want to make sure I'm in the no balance transfer transaction fee category with this.
Any tips? I've looked around on different sites and read through the thread but can't figure this timing thing out.

First, why not apply right away? Worst case, you end up with a credit balance on the card with which you plan to make the big purchases and lose a few weeks of the 0%. Second, consider a 0% purchases card? AMEX, WAMU, and a few other issuers have cards with 0% APR on purchases for 12 months.

I've already made several of the purchases in the last couple of days, so 0% purchases won't work out in this case, although in the future that would be something to think about, so thanks for the tip!
Regarding the application for the transfer 0% card, I have no problem losing a couple weeks of the 0% interest, but when it refers to "balances you transfer in response to this offer", does it mean that to get the $0 transfer fee, I have to disclose what I want to transfer: 1. When I'm applying 2. When I'm approved, or 3. Just within a certain time limit?
I guess that's what I'm really getting at. I'd rather apply later if I have to list what (or from where) I want to transfer when I'm applying. I'm not sure if anyone has specific experience with that.

I would say you generally have 30 days or so from activation to take advantage of this kind of BT offer. At least I think that's right. Someone else on this board may think differently.
I bet calling Citibank and asking them directly would give you the right answer.

I think I'll give it a shot and report back to everyone here how it went, though in the meantime if anyone has any specific experience in this situation, please keep chiming in.
I spoke to 5 different representatives at Citibank this morning and after that bounce-around, the last person believed (although they could not give me any definitive information regarding online offers) that all of my balance transfers during the first 12 month promotional period would have no transfer fee. That seems hard to believe, but at least I can argue that if I get charged.
It's really crazy how companies like this can have entire application centers and customer service departments with zero information about their online offers on their websites. Someone somewhere had to have written that sentence in the promotion, so you would think that someone somewhere would be able to give more detail about it.

1) Balance transfer APR: As long as balance transfers are completed within 12 months from date of account opening, 0.00% for 12 months from date of first balance transfer. After that same as for purchases.
2) Balance transfer fee: 3% of each balance transfer; $5 minimum. There is no fee with the 0.00% APR balance transfer offer described above.
It's very clear in the terms and conditions. If they don't honor it, fax a copy to them. This is not breaking any new ground. Apply for the card now & BT when you are ready.

how does a low or zero APR for puchases CC work?
buy your stuff, statement comes, pay the CC's 'minimum' aka $25, then you can carry (and add) to your balance, interest free, until the end of the promotion?

Funny this topic is up - I was just going to post this situation.
I have a Citi Professional account and I just did a BT responding to an online 0.00% no fee offer which is also for 12 months from date of first BT. I then received an e-mail stating the rate was good until April 2008. I called and spoke to a service representative who told me that when I took out the card in April 2007 I did a BT then, which I repaid in about six months. Citibank counts this as the first transfer in the 0.00% no fee offer and any subsequent BTs are limited to 12 months from the first one.
Yes this is technically what the offer said - but I was surprised to learn my new BT was only going to be good for 4 months. I e-mailed them and received a stock response. When I asked for a specific response they said it was put into research and could take up to 30 days to respond.

I was looking at markber's list on Page 3 where the potential profit for each card is listed.
How did he come up with $1748 for potential profit from the first card. $10,000 invested at 5% or so is $500?
What am I missing?
Edit: i found it. He was talking about transferring an 18% APR card.

I think the BOA NEA card is 12 months at 0% with a BT fee capped at $30. Sweet deal.
Anyone ever heard of PartnersFirst (a divison of Torrey Pines Bank)? I just got a targeted 0% 6month offer with a capped fee (but capped at $300) It would only make sense if they give out large CLs, so I'm wondering if anyone out there in FWF land has any experience with them.
Thanks

Anyone knows the number that I can call to discuss the online application that I just filed?
I have a current citicard account with 20K limit, and want to convert it into one of the 0% APR no fee offer to take advantage of the BT offer.
I applied for the home rebate card online and see a page "we need additional time to process your application". Does it mean that I got dinged already?
Thanks,

Note: while the list below is made for a specific case (5% savings account), I hope the card order on the list will not change much if the APY on your savings account is different.
List details: I wrote a script that calculates theoretically possible profit from investing a credit card balance ($10K) to a high-interest (5%) savings account. The calculations are done separately for 6 and 12 month investment periods and for promo terms for balance transfers and purchases. The script does not take in account the likelihood of moving balance from a card to a bank account. See this thread for ideas and some starting info. Also, the script makes an assumption about 2% minimum monthly payment for all credit cards. The scripts that do calculations and build a database with card terms may still have some bugs... so if something does not look right, please let me know. You can find this list linkified in this thread.

* - Balance transfer APR is valid only if the balance transfer is requested in credit card application ** - First annual fee is waived *** - The maximal fee for balance transfers is not shown. However, I did take the fee into account when I did calculations and sorted credit cards. **** - " 'BT profit' is the interest accumulated for 6 or 12 months after a balance transfer of $10,000 from a credit card to a 5% savings account. An assumption about 2% monthly minimal payment to the credit card is used. If the 1st annual fee is waved, then the annual fee is not included in the calculations. Depending on your selection of 'Type of promotion', promo rates and periods for either balance transfers or purchases are used

Yet another card with no BT fee and 0% APR on BT (only for 6 months though). You are also supposed to get $25 ESPN gift card with the first card use.

https://www.providiancard.com/bap/envwa/jumpApp.jsp?offer_id=esp01I've had 2 of these ESPN cards in my family and I can confirm you don't even need to make a purchase to get the gift card, they just send it about 3 weeks after you get your card.

Wells Fargo Visa Platinum Card has the following terms
Balance Transfer APRs: Introductory APRs range from 0.00% to 5.9% for the first 6 billing periods the account is open.
Balance Transfer Fee: The fee is $0 for the first 30 days the account is open and after that, 3% of the amount of each balance transfer, but not less than $5 or more than $75.
In the best case scenario, you get 0% APR for 6 months and no BT fee. I assume that this should depend on your credit score.
markber said: All lists were updated on 2/14/08 OP, could you please update again? Many CitiCards' 0% transfer fee are not valid anymore as of today, Feb 28.
I am looking for 0% APR for 12 months, and 0% transfer fee, thanks.

It looks like it's Fifth Third. They are mentioned in the Ts&Cs on the application form...and the Privacy Policy and Security Statement links at the bottom of the form pull up pages from the Fifth Third web site.

It looks like Shell credit card from Citibank does not have BT fees for 0% 6-month promo for balance transfers. $20 annual fee is waived for the first year.

OP--thank you for update. Are you finding that they are giving out lower CL's?
Here's a Washington Mutual ESPN-like card through Checks_Unlimited, 0%/6mo/no fee BT, with free monthly FICOs https://www.providiancard.com/bap/ckvwa/jumpApp.jsp?offer_id=ck01&banner_id=checks/website/CKCHMPBAN016MPBTTCK0100000

I just looked for this and got it. Awesome deal!
I could not use the USBANK Baylor/etc card b/c my balance is on a US bank card, and you cannot transfer between.
I was approved for a higher limit than US Bank and only had to pay the $25 cap BT fee. Not too shabby!
Update: They will also transfer as much of your balance as you want to your checking for $30, and it is at 0%.

With the Wells Fargo Visa Platinum Card, you are not guaranteed to get the 0% (increased from 6 to 9 months). They will approve you but it may be for the 5.9% APR. FYI, you can now transfer any number of balances during the introductory period for no fee.
I have screwed up my 0% for life of balance with Discover. I was late making the required purchase every month by one day at one time but they were kind enough to readjust my APR back to 0%. But then I was late making my minimum payment this year (for just a couple of hours) and although it's for a different reason, they said that they cannot readjust my APR back again to 0%. So much for that. That only lasted a year and I had to pay a BT fee of $75 to get that card. I wish I knew about the autopay feature before.
Oh well, i'll call them again and perhaps they'll reconsider if I threaten to move to a different CC. I found Bank of America's PetRewards® Platinum Plus® Visa® Credit Card. 0% guaranteed for only 6mos but no BT fee. 0% also on cash advance for 6 months. If you're looking for a 0% for 12 months, The only available out there are business cards (from Citi). I don't know how those work do you need to have a business to qualify for them?

https://wwwa.applyonlinenow.com/USCCapp/Ctl/entry?sc=FACERM0% only good on balance transfers with no cap on 3% fee = ripoff. For example, a $10,000 balance transfer costs you $300. Over 15 months, $10,000 at 2.0 percent interest only earns you $250. So why would anyone take up this offer (unless they were strapped for cash)?
Can anyone confirm if there is a NO MAX fee on the 0% BT offers from Bank of America? They say there's a 3% fee no less than $10 but does not mention a max.

Thats what I thought too, if they didn't mention it then there's no maximum. But my current BofA card just gave me an offer for 0.00% APR until May 2009 with a 3% fee, max of $90. Just took out $14k, now time to find somewhere to put it

We threatened to close out several Citibank Credit Cards we have. In order to "save the customer account" they gave us a 1.9% life of credit line rate and a 3% Bal.Transfer fee (capped at $75).
The kicker/sweetener was the fact that they gave us close to a $30K credit line and transferred it all to our checking account for the one time BT fee of $75. We can now take the money and pay off most of our credit cards (and avoid the usual BT fee for each credit card). Pretty good deal overall.
