any suggestions for a new general-use card?

since it seems my time with Chase Freedom is coming to an end ... sadly ... I'm in the market for a new one ... it looks like the Schwab 2% card is best and as I understand I can open the acct with no intention of using their brokerage. also considered the Citi Forward since their bonus categories are fairly good for me and their current opening offer is pretty good ... but it's a <1% card for EDP so that seems like a no-go ... I could consider opening BOTH and only using Forward for bonus categories but I haven't thought that far ahead yet.

edit: Forward opened, Schwab pending...!

I like my gas strategy more.. 5% from either my PenFed or Associated Bank and no extra work. :]

I'm thinking about the PenFed card as my first credit card. Since I currently have no credit do I even have a chance at getting a card like this? Or should I just save my $20 charity fee and go with something else? Any input would be appreciated.

FYI, my associates bank reward card was denied when I used it today. I received a letter a few months ago saying they were discontinuing it on 10/31

I just got a notice from Citi that my APR will be going to 18.99% on 12/20/09. Anyway, I've decided to opt out of this card so I'm in the market for a good general purpose card that has a low rate and offers points. I currently have a Discover that I use to get the 5% CB, but only during their CB promos. I really don't like their $400 limit. Citi is just gouging everyone...I'm done with them. Thanks for any information.

PenFed's rebate card is designed to rope people in and hope they do not pay their balance in full. This is how they pay for the rebates. They are friendlier to people who have balances to transfer. In my experience they are one of the tougher CUs from which to receive a credit card if you have no money on deposit with them, and especially if you have no other credit history.

Although they won't admit it, virtually any CU will be much more friendly to a CC app if you have money on deposit.

Here's a list of CUs anyone can join that have good credit cards (and most you join for $5 or free):

Delta
Addison Avenue
Vystar
Redstone
Alliant
Northwest

I believe all of these offer lower interest rates than PenFed.

I could use a new CC with some promo 0% purchases for a limited time with the holidays coming (quick search on the Citicard site has a couple of these), any notable cards that have any that along with some other small perk (like a certain number of points or rewards with first purchase. Like one Sony card I had like $150 off your first purchase of x amount, not looking for that much, but just wondering if anything is around) ,no annual fee preferred, thanks

Go back one page and read my post about the Capital One card. It doesn't offer a sign-up bonus, but it's still probably a good choice for what you're looking for. It has no annual fee if you have good credit. Otherwise, it's $39 a year.

I'm looking for a credit card with good rewards, specifically miles (though if there was a good CashBack deal, I might consider that). I buy practically EVERYTHING on my credit card and then pay it off every month before it's due, so I almost never carry a balance. Because of this, I don't really care about APR, since it really shouldn't affect me (and, actually, I still have my student card at 5% that I'm thinking about keeping, just in case I need to put something on there that I don't think I can pay off immediately).

Anyway, do y'all have any suggestions? Miles would be nice since I plan on traveling quite a bit in the future (aren't we all, though?), but I wasn't sure about who has the best deal out there. Capital One has a couple of cards, and so does Discover. I don't really want to be tied to a particular airline, so I think I'll pass on the Delta cards. My current daily-use credit card gets 1% CashBack on everything, so I don't know if there are any deals out there that beat this.

Also, has anyone ever signed up for a joint credit card? This card might be one in both my wife and my names, but I wasn't sure if you can even do this.

Suggestions? Thanks!

Moonlight, the quick summary at the beginning of this thread is what you'll want to consult to answer your questions. You can avoid red by always reading through that at least and it also helps to read the thread itself as well before posting.

Ah, I guess I thought that credit cards, the companies, and the offers might have changed in the more than 2 years since the thread's creation, but I suppose you're saying that everything is exactly the same? I did notice that the biggest post on page one was edited only a few months ago, but I have no idea if that means that post is kept current or not, since I'm new to the forum and unaware of what editing restrictions are in place for existing posts. I'll keep all of that in mind.

Also, I guess I also thought that 74 pages that may or may not pertain to my question was a bit much to read through as I do have class and did not feel wasting hours of time wading through possibly irrelevant information was worthwhile, but I appreciate the mild slap on the wrist as a warning that it is expected, regardless of thread content.

Thanks!

The 'big post on page one' is also known as the 'quick summary' and can be edited by anyone. If you have new information of find it to be outdated, please contribute to the FW community and update. In the last 2 pages or so of this thread, you may see new tidbits that have not been placed in the QS. So, minus your off-topic post, you only have to read 2 of 74 pages.

We all look forward to your report!

Just to confirm, this thread aims to be an exhaustive list of cards with benefits/rewards?

Thanks for adding hotels.

Yeah, that'd be nice if this was a one stop shop for benefits/rewards. I'd prefer to keep 0% BT promos in other threads but I won't object if that is how the mob votes.

The only other condition I'd ask it to only put in active cards as so many threads become useless with discontinued cards.

I'm slowly adding reward descriptions and links for most cards, but it'd be great if other people added them too.

Yeah good topic.

Of course Penfed is roping people in with the 5% so that they might not pay their balance in full and they earn money. Thank You to the people who do this, so I can benefit from the 5%. I've been loving it for the past 2 years.
