I'm looking to replace my Citi card (with it's good for nothing "Thank You" points). I'm looking at the Capitol One Venture vs Chase Sapphire cards. I'm usually around $1500 a month and don't really travel (though I'm looking to change that with reward points). At first the capitol one seems better since I can get 2pts per $1 and lower annual fee, but the Chase bonus 50,000 points and being able to use points for Cash Back is nice (if I decide not to travel). Has anyone used the Chase Ultimate RewardsSM site? It says you can get 25% off but is it as easy to use as say Expedia or like sites?
Thanks for any insight.
PS - Since my mortgage is Chase, do you think they'd let me pay that with a Chase CC? haha
I usually keep my credit file frozen and open it when I need to apply for a credit card. In the past I have applied and got Chase and American Express. With Chase, I applied and then got a letter saying could not access file, call with reference number. I went and opened Equifax because I could do it on-line and I had no problem. They accepted that credit rating company. With AMEX same thing but they insisted Experian and I had to write to them to open it and then called AMEX and then it worked. But they were particular for Experian only. I applied for Capital One and same thing - got a letter saying all 3 credit files could not be accessed. However no phone number on it to call back just mail address. So I called and said I want to apply by phone can I give you the pin which I froze my credit file and he said, we can't do that and I need to open all 3 files and then call me. I finally thought spending $15 for 3 temporary openings and one of them I can only do by mail, this is getting to be too bothersome. So I decided to give the Capital One credit card a pass. I am wondering what has been the experience of others who freeze their credit files. What is your experience applying for new credit under such conditions?
I got an Orchard Bank card with a $500.00 deposit. After two payments I got pre-approvals one after another. I have eight cards in a year now, including a $1500 Discover and a $500 Chevron Texaco.

Rather than acquire so many cards, it might be more useful to call up every six months and request a credit line increase.
I am traveling next month and looking for a VISA brand no foreign transaction fees. Like the above poster, I am looking at Cap One Venture Rewards or the Chase Sapphire. What would you experts recommend? Is these 2 cards worth considering or something else is better? I am only going to be using this card for travel purchases not for everyday in the US. Thanks in advance for any replies. I very much appreciate it.

The Cap One Venture card does not have an annual fee. No foreign transaction fees.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred has a $95 annual fee (but also a sweet $500 sign up bonus) No foreign transaction fees.
The Chase Sapphire (Non Preferred) DOES charge you for foreign transaction fees.
any good AMEX cards with good rewards and a good sign up bonus. believe it or not, i d not have an AMEX and i am missing too many deals without. any suggestions is appreciated. i spend most on gas and groceries.

Do you want points or cash?
Here are my two recommendations: CashBack card; Blue cash everyday/preferred thread - if you're going to spend a lot at grocery stores, I recommend going with the preferred card (6% at grocery stores with the annual fee) - For gas - buy gas gift cards at the grocery store with that card - effectively giving you 6% at gas stations too.
Points card (best signup bonus + return on groceries) - others may not agree with this, and I'd only go with this card if you want hotel points HHonors AMEX - direct link - 60,000 HHonors points after spending 750 in 3 months 6-3 points structure: Receive 6 HHonors Bonus Points for every eligible dollar you spend at Hilton Worldwide portfolio of brands, and at supermarkets, drugstores, gas stations, wireless and home phone, internet, cable and satellite TV service providers. Receive 3 HHonors Bonus Points for every eligible dollar charged everywhere else.2 No annual fee No Blackout Dates: No blackout dates when redeeming for hotel stays Silver status: Complimentary Silver status for life of membership
I have both these cards - I tend to use BlueCash for most of my spending and HHonors for only Hilton hotel stays. If you're going to save up your HHonors points for a BIG vacation it can be a better deal. If you'll just redeem points for a weekend night, they're not worth much
It doesn't have to be Cap One or Chase Sapphire Preferred.
Anyone can suggest what's the best Visa card for foreign travel purposes only?
Thanks
Another option is PenFed VISA - If you're driving overseas, that 5% CashBack on gas (paid at the pump) would be nice (in addition to 0% FOREX). It's also a good card to use domestically if you drive a lot.

If you spend $3000 in the first three months you get 50,000 points, or $500 cash transferred to your Chase checking account.
I got a targeted offer for 50,000 points after my first purchase, but I got lucky... And have excellent credit"
I had a Chase bank account to get the $100 freebie for opening it. then they wanted to start charging monthly fee unless I made a direct deposit of x amount, so I did, but they didn't like the way I did the direct deposit amount/frequency. So I said to heck w/ them and closed it.
Long way around to make my point, which is if you take the $500 deposited into an acct, which would have to be opened if not existing, and then most likely jump through the same hoops I did to avoid the monthly fees, otherwise, it eats into your $500 principle.
I'm getting a divorce and my wife will needs a visa or mc. I'm kind of bewildered at what to recommend to her. I'm thinking the BofA 1,2,3 card just because it's easy for her to apply and the terms looks pretty good. You only get a $50 credit after first purchase, but they do offer 0% for 12 months on new purchases which might come in handy for her. I have a penfed visa but she wouldn't want to or know how to apply for it. Her credit is excellent, but she has no job outside of the alimony she's getting.
Any other cards we should consider? BT offers aren't important as she's leaving the marriage with no debt. Most purchases will be food and gas (if she's smart!) which is why I think the BofA card looks good. 2% back on groceries and 3% on gas. Thanks.

If you're mostly shopping at Costco, blue cash may not be the best option for you.
Costco is categorized as Category: Merchandise & Supplies - Wholesale Stores
so I think the AMEX Blue Cash preferred will only get you 1% CashBack. Right? That's not worth the annual fee.
So if you want a CashBack card - I'd suggest the Fidelity 2% AMEX card since the other AMEX cards would give you 1% at Costco. If you want a rewards card - get whatever rewards card suits your travel preferences (ie. if you fly delta, get a delta card. if you stay at Hilton properties, get the Hilton card).
On a side note, I find it ironic that the Costco AMEX cards only give 1% CashBack at Costco.
We have an old Bank of America card with a lousy 1% CB and they used to do various categories. They are no longer offering rotating categories and so I'd like to switch up the card. Which BOA is the best card for everyday spending? The new 1 2 3 card? we have equal gas groceries ect expenses with nothing more then others. Thoughts?
I have both Chase Sapphire and Chase Freedom, but I like Freedom better. They offer 5% back in some categories. This quarter (Jan thru March) the 5% back is for all gas station and Amazon purchases.
I've used a Pentagon Federal Credit Union cash rebate card for several years now.
I loved that it gave 5% cash-back on gas and 1.25% (reduced to 1%) on everything else with an automatic monthly statement credit. I also liked that Penfed allows for daily quicken downloads - although I found that it was cludgy and frequently "missed" a few days here and there. However, I was willing to tolerate the irritation.
Over the Christmas break, however, I received a letter from Penfed which announced something that didn't really matter, and then also happened to mention that the 1% rebate on everything else is going DOWN to .25%. They also encourage me to switch to a new product that will essentially give what my current card gives, but without the automatic statement credit, i.e. I'll now have to earn points and manually redeem them for "stuff" including Visa gift cards in order to use the $$.
Given the hassles with Quicken, this has pushed me over the edge, and I'm now ready to switch to a new card. I've read the stickies, but none of them tell me whether any of the cards support daily Quicken downloads.
So, here's the question: What's the best alternative to Pentagon Federal Credit union that:
(1) Gives automatic Cash Back in the form of a statement credit, and (2) Allows for daily quicken dowloads

Anyone?
Cap One Sparks Business Visa gives statement credit, but you have to request it. The nice thing is, you don't have to wait for the statement to close.
The only other card with auto statement credit I know is the SimplyCash AMEX. Earn 5% Cash Back on wireless services and office supplies, 3% Cash Back on automobile gasoline, and 1% on other purchases.

Sorry if this is posted already, but I have hunted and cannot answer it myself:
About to get married (well, in 90 days). Will spend $30K for the whole kit and caboodle. $10K catering, $2K booze, $2K honeymoon, $2.5k photographer, and so on. Which credit card should I use to get the best deal (note, I have the cash in hand, and to those that want to say spend less I have already thought this out through and through, this is not a crimp on our finances).

Maybe the AARP Visa one post above yours? 5% on everything for 6 months, hard to beat that.

Absolutely +1+1+1+1 on Chase AARP. It didn't exist for my marriage and I am on a mission to get all to-be-married folks to get it for marriage expenses (and after).

I have both cards as well, except the Sapphire Preferred instead of the regular.
I use the Chase Sapphire Preferred for most purchases. If you read the fine print, this card gives you an unbelievable amount of protection, probably one of the best in the industry. One that really surprised me was that if I book a flight with the card and get injured during the flight (such as lose a limb or life) - it will protect me with life insurance up to $500,000 to my beneficiaries. It gives 2x points on purchases made while dining and 2x on travel related expenses. Also it gives you a 7% bonus on the amount of points that you've earned in the year. Any purchases that don't beat the 1% CashBack, I make with this Sapphire Preferred card. Plus it feels great in the hand being made of some type of metal. Always get compliments on it.
The Freedom I use for the 5% categories as applicable. This month until March, it is Amazon and Gas. Other than that, it's no better than a 1% CashBack card for all other purchases.
The good thing about having both cards together, is that the Ultimate Rewards points can be interchanged, and you can transfer CashBack instantly for statement credit, or you can get gift cards, travel rewards, and even cash straight into your Chase checking account.
The Chase Freedom and Sapphire cards are a fantastic duo to have.
gosh, sounds like I work for Chase, but really I don't.
Long term: I'm a fan of the Fidelity AMEX at 2% from the first dollar supported by the Fidelity VISA (where AMEX is not accepted) at 1.5% up to $15k in spending in a 12 months period and 2.0% beyond that the rest of the 12 month period. Points may be moved between the two in 2500 point blocks. I can gift points to another person with the same kind of cards. ======== Yes, I do the 5% card rebates as much as my NORMAL spending takes me.

Well put, completely understandable for a newbie to the CashBack world. This will likely be my route.
As a student with no "independent income," has anyone other than me been denied due to this since Oct 2011? FIA said that regardless of FICO score, payment history or household income, they have to abide by the new Federal law? They will consider independent ability to pay with a "significant" independent source of income such as a bank balance (e.g. for homemakers).
