krismanten said:   I have a discover card and a starter loan im paying on. but i have not applied for any other credit cards or anything. I get applications all the time but have never applied. I have had the capone for a little lover a year now

Hopefully, others will chime in because I've never had a secured card, so I don't know how that helps/hurts your score. I would definitely call CapOne and ask if it can be converted to a no annual fee card, either secured or not. If it can't be converted, I would apply for one or two cards with no annual fees to compliment your Discover Card and start building on your credit profile. After you get them, then cancel the secured card. My gut says that cancelling the card with the annual fee is your best bet because it is costing your money, but I can't really say for sure if it will cost you more down the line if you cancel it without replacing it with something else. You do have another credit card and loan, so it would still be something on your credit profile. But, if you cancel this card without replacing it with something else, it is likely to have a negative impact because of your thin credit profile.

And, never ever cancel your Discover card. My first ever card was a Discover card and it is now by far the oldest card in my credit history (20+ years). It has been sock-drawered several times, but now I use it for the 5% bonus categories and at a store that only takes Discover cards. All of my other cards are less then 10 years old (many @5 years old from the good AOR days). The long history of my Discover card helps balance it out.

Can anyone advise on how some of these cards handle income (individual vs HHI)? I am interested in signing up for a few of these with good sign-up bonuses. My wife's credit score is great but her income is lower due to being part-time at this time (and for the next 1-2 years). Wondering if she can apply for some of these with good sign-up bonuses using HHI. (We're in a community property state but I am unsure if that is acknowledged by CC companies). Thanks in advance!

I'm not aware of any cards that allow HHI income anymore.
That being said, my wife is in a similar situation, and she signs up for cards all the time. She makes some part time $$+rental income+around $1000/month from Amazon Payments that adds up to her annual income.
you might not get some cards (like Chase Sapphire Preferred). And if you were to get triggered for an AMEX Financial Review, you might get some cards closed (since they ask for recent paystubs).

Maybe someone here can give me a suggestion as to whether or not I should try to apply for another cc. I have to pay approx. 5k in college tuition at the end of this month. The college is set up with afford.com to accept payments. They will accept Discover, AMEX and Mastercard (but strangely not VISA) but charge 2.99% fee. Are there any cards that would make this worth my while to charge? I will pay the charge off immediately; I don't need to finance the balance. Or should I just continue to pay cash. Thanks for any ideas, comments.

3% of 5k = $150. You can get any card that offers a signup bonus of at least $150 and make money on it.
Can you make multiple payments? If so, this could be used to make a few bonuses.

AMEX Premier Rewards Gold will give you 25,000 points (worth $250 in various merchant gift cards or at least $125 in cash) for spending $2K; perhaps not worth it. DW got a targeted offer last year for the AMEX PRG: 75K points for spending $3K. Look for other offers like this.

(Note: It has been confirmed here Citi Forward and Citi mtvU ThankYou point program is much worse than other ThankYou program which all manage by ThankYou.com. Don't have any good 1 TY point to 1 cent reward)
- 5 ThankYou points Citi mtvU Visa, student version of Citi Forward Visa, plus, earn TYP for maintaining good GPA
- 3% Chase Ink Cash (3% Cash Back on gas, restaurants, home improvement stores, and office supply stores)

looking for a good restuarant card since discover's bonus restuarant quarter is over.
so chase ink > citi Forward for restaurants?

Cit Forward's thankyou points dont co-mingle w/my citibank banking thankyou points?
ie: 1 point to 1 cent for air travel?

Why not Chase Freedom. 5% on restaurants & gas this quarter. Plus an extra .1% and $.10 per transaction. Come Q4, I plan to choose restaurants as my categories on the US bank Visa for effectively 6.25%.

I have both Citi Forward and a Citibank basic checking account linked together. I have been a longtime Citi mtvu/Forward credit card holder and I opened the checking account this year. The TY points for the checking account qualifying activities go into the same TY account as my credit card. You will either have to link the credit card to your existing account or combine TY accounts (if a TY account is created for your credit card).

For air travel, it is about 1 to 1 (1 pt=$0.01) in terms of regular airfare for most airlines except Southwest. Last time I booked a flight, I noticed a difference of 100ish points or $1ish (which is probably a booking fee I supposed) vs. the regular airfare cost for that flight if it was exactly converted to TY points price (aka $200=20000 pts). Since its only a few points, its not a big deal considering that using your points to book a flight is still a good deal for TY points.

it seems like 10000 TY points for $650 total spent in 1st 3 months is best i can find right now for this card

I think that is the best sign up offer for the Forward card right now. Forward is one of the best cards for actually usage out there right now, so it's still worth signing up to me. Also, 5TY points translates to 5% if used for airfare, gift cards, mortgage payment, or student loan payment. If you also have the Citi TY Premier card, 5TY points translates to 6.65% on airfare, still 5% on the others.

Moving this conversation over here from this thread.

ProjectileWallet said:   Hey imbatman, I see that you had another bonus-o-rama a few months ago. I'm currently planning a bonus-o-rama of my own (first AOR). Are there any other card offers on your radar that you didn't pull the trigger on?

imbatman said:   There are lots of good deals. I previously got a few of them. These cards fit my needs/wants. I wanted one from citi, AMEX, chase, and every once in a while I throw in a barclays.
My answer to your question is... More questions. what are your needs/wants (cash, hotel points, airline points, bank points good for transfer)?
When was the last time you had a credit hit?
How many cards do you have with each bank?
How much can you spend in the next 3 months?

I'm looking primarily for cash, or something as close as possible to cash, i.e. Visa/MC/AMEX gift card, or major retailer gift card (for instance, Amazon/eBay/WalMart). Also, I think I can reasonably tie up about $5,000 in cash equivalents to fulfill spending requirements without having to worry about liquidity.

Just pulled my free annual credit reports. Haven't taken a major hit recently. Inquiries by credit bureau:
EX: 6 (most recent July 2011)
EQ: 4 (most recent Jan 2011)
TU: 2 (most recent Jan 2011)

Score from Credit Karma/TU: 770

Cards by bank (Limit/# of cards):
- AMEX: 9,000/1 (also have a 5,000 business card for an LLC)
- BOA: 5,000/1
- Cap1: 5,000/1
- Chase: 2,600/1
- Citi: 12,500/1
- Discover: 4,000/1

Currently looking at these cards, but wondering if there's anything better going on right now:
- NFL Barclays Card: $200 statement credit toward purchases >$25 in first 3 months
- Penfed Visa: $235? after spending $650 in first 3 months
- Citi ThankYou Premier: $300 after spending $2500 in first 3 months
- Citi Diamond Preferred: $200 statement after $500 of "online purchases"
- Chase Ink Bold Business: $250 after first purchase (probably won't be able to spend $10,000 for the other $250)

Any suggestions?

I was gonna mention the 50k TY Premier offer. Please note that some people are having problems with it. I've not experienced it, but some are reporting that it sends you to a 30k offer, or an error website.
PenFed Visa is $235? That's an odd amount for a signup bonus, but I'll admit that I've not been following it closely.
I'd suggest throwing in an AMEX card or two. Perhaps Blue Cash/Blue Cash preferred. They both have something like 100-150 sign up bonuses. AMEX Gold card has a 25k MR point (good for $250 in gift cards) bonus (but they regularly have had 75k offers).
Maybe replace the Chase Ink Bold with the Chase Sapphire (40k UR points after 3,000 spent in 3 months.

Others to consider - There are a couple of BOA cards that have 100-150 offers, but run targeted 400 offers (I've not received those).
Citi Dividend card (bonus usually around $150, and gives a 5% rotating category card)
Chase Freedom (not sure what the current bonus is, I've seen up to $300, might be $100 now, also a 5% rotating category card).

In a community property state your spouse can put in 50% of your household income. Google some of the articles on the "Card Act" "Community property" and "Stay at home mom" and you'll see the recent debate on this issue.

Good call. I'll have to figure out how to spend the additional $3,000, but a pretty good deal here.

Already have Chase Freedom as a spender card, and don't want to apply for more than 2 Citi Cards. Also, not impressed by BOA's $100 offerings. I'll hold out for a possible targeted offer.

Updated starting lineup:
- NFL Barclays Card: $200 statement credit toward purchases >$25 in first 3 months
- Penfed Visa: $235? after spending $650 in first 3 months
- Citi ThankYou Premier: $500 after spending $2500 in first 3 months

- Chase Sapphire Preferred: $400 after spending $3000 in first 3 months
- AMEX Preferred Rewards Gold: $250 after spending $2000 in first 3 months
- AMEX Blue Cash Preferred: $150 after spending $1000 in first 3 months

Now I'll have to sit down and figure out how to flip $9800.

You can receive points toward any charge $25 or more and you need to have enough points to cover the whole transaction (aka if the purchase is $40, you must have 4000 pts to receive towards it).

I'm asking a question for once! I'm hoping someone in FWF land found something good that I havent' found yet.
I was planning on adding the barclay's NFL $200 bonus into my next AOR to get a Barclay's card (this week)
But it looks like that offer is now $100 (depending on the browser). So I'm debating a different Barclay's card.

I'm currently considering the US Airways 40k on first purchase. The problem is that I'm in Atlanta, and 40k US Airway miles doesn't really do me a whole lot of good right now other than to pad my miles wallet.
Anyone have any other ideas?

for those that are curious, this AOR will be Chase BA 100k, AMEX mercedes Plat 50k, Citi TY premier (if i can find a 50k link) or Citi AAdvantage 50k (if no Citi TY Premier), and Virgin AMEX 65k (45k most likely).

You should double up the Citi applications if you can meet the spend and do one of each or 2X the AA card (see flyertalk for discussion of the two browser method - may be a myth, but better safe than sorry).

I'd grab the 40K on US Air since it is first purchase. Worth more than $100. I am grabbing it in my next set of apps.

I'm thinking about the 2x AA. My problem is that I'm also working on a 10k spend for my wife's card. I'm not sure I can spend ~$25k in the next 3 months, so I'm looking for lower spend cards (why I'm taking the Mercedes Plat 50k after 1k spend rather than the regular AMEX platinum 50k after 3k spend).

I'm more interested in a Barclay's card with a low spend. I'll optimize my spends to get the best bonuses. I'd take 40k United Miles after first purchase over another 50k AAdvantage miles after another 3k spend.. . . maybe.

I'm not doing the option that nets an extra 50k miles after 20k spending. I'm doing the option that gives 50k after first purchase and 50k after the first year of card membership (no spend). no spend, 100k miles after $150 in annual fees and one or two purchases. I'll probably use it some.

I've searched for this but can't seem to find. How about adding info on what credit score is needed to obtain each of these cards? Some of us are still working on building ours up.

Thanks for all the info and the help!

Giving credit scores might confuse people since there are different types (FICO, Fakeco [spelling?], EX, EQ, TU, what version of TU, etc). Plus, the scores are only a part...credit utilization, negative information, have a mortgage or not, etc, etc. matter as well.

The last credit card I got was Sallie Mae 5% back in April. Their letter said I had 728 TU. I have CL $3000. APR 15.99%. I have like 10 credit cards...never missed payments and always paid in full for all cards...one negative info from 2008 for moving out of an apt...got rid of a mortgage before I applied for the card...I applied for a CapOne MC back in Jan, so about 3-month blank time before I applied. Oh yeah, about 4 - 5 INQ in the past 2 years. 2 of them were for mortgage applications.

That's an open ended question.
You're better off saying
"I have a credit score of [insert score here] from [insert credit bureau here] do you think I'll be able to get [insert this card here]?" Even then, the likely response will be "check creditboards.com". It's better to be specific than request an answer that could be better provided by a shotgun.

It's a moving target, and it's not something that can easily be maintained. There are some cards that require 740+ scores
some that require 700+ scores
some that require 600+ scores.
There are some cards that you can get with no credit history.

And I don't know which is which for all cards. Neither does creditboards.com. They just provide an outlet for individuals to report "I have a score of XYZ and got this card"

For Vagrants example. I too got the Sallie Mae 5% card. Their letter said I had a TU of 798, and I got a CL of 10k.
The minimum score to get that card today = Infiniti because you can't apply for the card anymore. Back when I applied for it, I had no idea what the minimum score that was required. I just know that 796 (and now 728) was good enough to get the card.

Not sure if this is the righ forum to ask. My wife received her SSN, so she is fairly new as far as credit rating goes. She is a homemaker, so no income too. Wondering if she could apply for a credit card? What are the chances she gets approved?
