No this is not a repost about the 5% for 6 months.
I have a friend that is not "hip" to the current bargains. When the Dividend card went to 2%, I told him to cancel it. He never got around to it. A few days ago, he got a phamphlet that the card is once again 5% on gas/groceries/pharmacies. The phamphlet didn't mention a time period (6 months or otherwise). Could it be possible that he somehow got grandfathered in...or maybe for those who kept with the Dividend card...a pleasant surprise?
EDIT 5/14: Got my friend's pamphlet in my hand! Back to 5%! No time limit in sight! 5% on purchases supermarkets, drugstores, and gas stations. 1% on other purchases, Earn up to 300 Dividend Dollars in a calender year (eligible transactions appearing on your January to December billing statements payable in checks of at least $50 only upon your request. This pamphlet is printed in 2007!

Interesting thing, of course, is the phamphlet he got. If it hasn't been hit yet, why would he receive a phamphlet telling him that the 5% is still valid? I'll try to see if I can get my hands on his phamphlet and scan it.

A similar thing was just reported on SD. Unless you are the same OP as there.

Darn. All I got was a notice about an impending "upgrade" to a World card. Blast my "noteworthy card history"! Wonder if declining the upgrade would increase the likelihood of getting reverted back to 5%. (Those of you who have already rejected the new card, please let us know.)
OP: please ask your friend about his usage and credit limit. Maybe we can figure out what made him so lucky.

As far as I know, he spends only groceries and gas on it. So his spending isn't huge, and he pays it off every month. I told him to transfer to Chase Rewards six months ago, but he didn't listen or he just never got to it. To be honest, I hope he doesn't get it...that'll teach him not to listen to me!!!

Well, I gave you green but if I find out this isn't true...
I wonder if they are going to put the Thank You Card back up to 5points/dollar?

Arrgh, if this is true I'm actually gonna be pissed, seeing as how I slipped and let them close my Dividend to get a bump in my AT&T Universal (for upcoming BT). Especially since it turns out I need another 5% card as I'll be maxing out rewards on Discover Gas and Chase Rewards.
But I'm not beating my head on the desk yet, not until we get some more confirmations... if this is really 5% across the board this thread should start lighting up in the coming days.

Can you scan the pamphlet? Thanks.
I called Citi as soon as I read the original post, and asked if there was any likelihood that Citi might bump people back to 5%. Unfortunately, the CSR said that they had not heard any news regarding bumping people back to 5%. That makes me doubt that anything like that will happen anytime soon.
Of course, it is entirely possible the CSR hasn't heard about the new policy or isn't authorized to reveal anything.

I called to confirm, and was only able to get 5% for 3 months. Better than nothing, but definitely not as good as hoped. I asked whether the 5% for 3 months would continue if I allowed my card to upgrade to World, and the CSR said it would.
ETA: I have a theory. It's probably wrong, but I'm going to throw it out anyway. Last time I spoke to Citi, they weren't able to give me any offers. (Believe me I tried.) This time, I was able to get 5% for 3 months. What's different? I happened to use the card for one of their everyday categories last month, which I hadn't done for a long time (it was my comcast bill). Could it be that the one use triggered the 3 month offer? I'm going to start using the Dividend again heavily and hope that the usage pattern qualifies me for an extended 5%. It's a long shot, but I figure I have nothing to lose.

I have always used my Citi Dividend Platinum card for everything (except Discover for restaurants when I had the old 5%) and I did not receive the old 5% offer - just the "world" upgrade, due to happen in late June. I pay in full every month without exception.
I was going to close the account in protest, but what do others think? Go to world mastercard, or maybe stick w/ the dividend?
Guys maybe Citi has seen a drastic drop in charges on this Card once the 5% went to 2% and now that they see the 2% won't fly they are going back to 5% ...
Hope they see the error of their ways.
In any case I was able to snag a Chase 5% Cash Plus Rewards just as they were shutting those down, so I should be good for several months yet.
I switched everything over to it the day the Citi 5% offer Expired (April 14 in my case).
I generally charge everything to whatever rewards card I am using at the time not just gas, grocery, and drug store to build rewards faster on that card.

Ok, I went to the trouble of scanning this pamphlet...so one of you want to host it, PM me with your email addy and I'll send you the file. You all should give me green after this

Without letters from Citi like with the world "upgrade" or some actual added pennies dropped in the bonus categories on the next statement, it's kinda hard to call this deal CONFIRMED. I'd say this is more a YMMV, no?

I did say for those of us who have the card already. And I think if you print it out and dispute it with CITI, it would work.

Thanks for your post, Wreptyle. Is there any way to view the pics on the website rather than download them to my computer? If not, would it be possible for you to upload the pics to tinypic.com? That way, we don't actually have to download the files. thanks!

I got a 'similar' pamphlet with my statement for the last month. But on the pamphlet, it is saying 2% for those everyday purchase!
I guess your friends may be the lucky few.

I haven't received any mailing, but couldn't resist making a $3.20 charge at the gas station this morning on my Dividend Select card. Statement closes 5/17 so it should post and I'll see if it's good for me.
BTW: pfui on that boycott 'big' oil for a day nonsense. Filling up yesterday or tomorrow it'll be all the same to their bottom line if you burn the fuel.

I agree, instead of not filling up that day people should just not drive anywhere for 1 day. That would hurt them.

Citi is shady as hell. Luckily I'm grandfathered in for the similar credit card from Chase. They closed it to new members, but the existing members still kept their 5% - 1% (or at least I did)..

Yep I went with Chase and the wife went with Citi. She got her letter about 5-6 weeks ago on the no longer 5%, have not heard anything back yet
hmm, links to the pamphlet scans don't work anymore.
my citi also went down to 2%, and i also got the "world" offer. i've already got the chase rewards, so i'm just using that for groceries and gas for now.

yes, unlike Citi, all those who have Cash Plus and Rewards Plus cards with Chase STILL get 5%, even though the cards have not been available to new customers for a very long time now....Chase is generally much nicer about letting you stay in a rewards program long after they have stopped marketing it....I use to have Citi, but because of their much more generous attitude, i will remain loyal to Chase (even if they eventually convert the cards over to Freedom)...

I speculate that the Chase Rewards card will discontinue the 5% program within a year. The citi drivers edge card, chase freedom are probably the next best for the same categories.

You may be right. At that point, I'll toss Chase as I tossed Citi Dividend. My primary card ia AMEX Blue Cash; I only use Chase cash plus or HSBC Direct Rewards for EDP each year until I hit the $6500 tier on AMEX.

Looks like Citi is tuning their rewards. Clearly them pulling the 5% rug out of their customers was a disaster to say the least for them (somebody got fired I bet). At the moment, they are "tweaking" their reward upwards a bit, but this 6month crap is just bait and switch.
My Citi Platinum select (first ever CC no less) is now being milked for the $100 Gas rebate of the Citi Credit Protector Scam. (Come to think of it, I am getting better returns on it right now than I ever had....)

Now I am looking for a new card. Unfortunately, the 5% Reward Cards thread has not been updated in quite awhile
I started the "What credit card should I get, FAQ" sticky at the top of the forum for the exact reason that I was tired of people pointing towards expired cards and out of date threads.
I suggest you take a look at it.
Anyway, there are *some* 5% or more cards left but they tend to be more restrictive then the Dividend/Rewards Plus days. You'll either need to spend a lot, drive a lot, or only get gas and not groceries and pharmacy goods.
