I read the article about USAA offering select clients e-deposits of checks, but I don't qualify for membership. Does anyone know of an online bank offering this service for cheap or free? I could really use it, as I mail in about 25 checks a week to my current online bank.
I searched around and it looks like it's only for big businesses - I found one site (depositnow.com) that wanted $29 a month - no way.

PNC Bank, but it's for a business account. It's called 'deposit now'. PNC has a free small business checking account which qualifies IIRC. You need Quickbooks.

i took a survey from etrade about this feature... i gave it as positive feedback as possible. hopefully they incorporate it soon.
Ive found a number of banks offering it, though none for free.
USAA has a similar service using your own scanner and thats free, but unless youre eligible to join USAA bank many people can no longer get in.
I would think online banks/brokerages would be especially hungry to offer this service. USAA's service allows me to avoid my local BofA almost entirely. Or, is this just another case of FWF-ers being atypical consumers? I guess not many people worry about 1 or 2 days of float and/or have many large BT checks to deposit. 
fremontbank.com has an ad in the paper about a free remote deposit setup promotion. No mention of ongoing monthly fees on the website
Wachovia offers Free Business Checking and has the remote deposit service (although this part charges a monthly fee).
They call it Online Deposits. More info can be found here (https://www.wachovia.com/onlinedeposits). Seems like $45/month service and $17/month scanner lease for $3/day.
The first 50 deposits included free (don't know if this is 50 items or 50 deposits w/ multiple items in a deposit), then $0.25 per deposit.
I'm using depositnow (Bankserv) and it works well. I have the A/R version that ties in with QuickBooks. IMHO $30/mo is a small price to pay for the convenience, simplicity, flexibility, productivity, and ease of funds access. After you're well established and the underwriters are confident in your business you'll have funds availability within minutes. This can really come in handy if you make a "goof" and need to deposit some funds right away to avoid bounced checks, overlimit fees, etc. No matter how good your practices are sometimes we make mistakes so this can save you that headache. Not to mention if your customers checks bounce you can simply rescan the same check when they give you the go ahead instead of mailing back and forth waiting longer.
And of course the obvious benefit of not having to drive to the bank, wait in line, etc, just to deposit your funds which they will hold until the following day anyways. There's been quite a few times where we're working late and a 7PM scan will happen.
Free would be nice, and believe me, I will keep an eye out for it.. but for me at least the $30 is well worth it.

You have to mail the check to them. If they don't get the check in 8 business days you get to pay overdraft and NSF fees. Interest too I'd wager.
You have a dollar limit. I swear I recall it being $750 but don't see that on the page linked above.
It's been around at least a couple of years. It's just not a very impressive deal. The only difference between mailing a deposit in a prepaid envelope and this is that the money is immediately available.
the whole point of remote deposit is that you never have to mail checks in , or take them to the bank. You deposit them right at home, then destroy them after they are paid.
my credit union also has the "online deposit" similar to PFCU, where you can get instant credit for a check, but you still have to mail it in....
my CU has a limit of $2500, and you get immediate use of the money....the only drawback would be if the check gets lost in the mail, because if they don't receive it within 5 business days, there are hefty penalties and fines, so of course, it is not as good as when you can just scan a check and toss it out....
While it's true, the chance of it getting lost is probably small..it could happen....the biggest plus of it is that it gives you immediate use of your money (up to $2500) for a mailed in deposit....
USAA instructs their customers to destroy checks that are deposited via their deposit@home service. With DCU's service, does one need to mail them the original check or can it be destroyed, as well? Thanks.

Navy Federal Credit Union is reported to offer this type of service, too. Their public website doesn't seem to mention it, though. Does anyone have any information on the particulars of NFCU's service, as well? [Their website doesn't list an e-mail address. What's that all about? Here's their phone number if someone cares to inquire and report back. 1-888-842-NFCU. Note: their fee page is one lengthy document. (Few can beat GMACBank's short list of fees!)]
P.S. We need to start a letter campaign to the bank's we do business with advising them of this new "innovation".
