Technologist, I made this little summary on how to get the $ from BT to checking that may help out (keep in mind I didn't ask for a BT on any apps for me personally as I only had one credit card before my own personal AOR). Check with your bank first about the BT to debit card as I hear some banks accept this, some don't (I haven't had the guts to try it, but would like to collect a datapoint for my thread). |

OP, if Citi is taking some time to cut the check, is it worth doing this ? Sorry, I'm failing to understand the reason and possible hassles if my overpay is much over the CL, though I see many posting pretty large amounts that what I would. |

apparently it works for hsbc debit cards, if i remember correctly from some recent AOR threads. BTing to HSBC debit cards is definitely dead. It worked until about the end of June, but everyone that has tried it so far in July has had major headaches (me included). |

Thanks again for the replies so far (gonna do some really weird stuff this AOR, like NOT pay down the balance on several of my cards first.... just to see the affect!). I tried using the CITI online BT form with a debit card. I tried several debit cards, and they were all refused, in real time. I believe the CITI BT application somehow has a way to differentiate a debit card attached to a checking account from a credit card. |

Sorry, I'm failing to understand the reason and possible hassles if my overpay is much over the CL, though I see many posting pretty large amounts that what I would. If debit card transfer won't work anymore, and I run into problems moving overpayment from Citi CC into CC checking / savings, then I will have to go the "request a check route" (and lose several days interest while waiting on the check). The reason some people do this (BT all new CLs INTO citi) can be one of several: A. They want to pay off multiple CURRENT CC's, but don't want to pay multiple BT fees (works good if fee is capped). Make ONE large BT to citi, overpaying it,, then using the money to payoff multiple other card balances. B. People have NO balances on CC's, and want to take OPM (Other People's Money) and put it into HYS (High Yield Savings) or other money-making "scheme". The thought that putting all the money in one account, then transferring it out to HYS makes it easier to manage. C. Use X Bank to Pay X CC. As an example, I may have $10,000 bal on Chase rewards card. I apply for and receive Chase Freedom, Chase Sony, and Chase KISS cards (all with 0%, 12 Mo BT, and each with a 12K CL). But I can't pay off a Chase card using a Chase BT.... SO I BT $6,000 from each card to citi (total 18K), then pay off my original/current chase rewards with 10K of that, leaving the remaing 8k for whatever I want. D. Combination of the above (such is true in my case). Thanks again for all the data points; 30K on 5K CL is the new leader (25K over line, or 600%)! |

Technologist, thanks much for the elaboration. I do not seem to have no fee BT offers on any of my Citi anymore re-route elsewhere, and seeing some mentions of 30 day delay in processing prior to regular 7 day paper check timings, I'm putting this on hold. I guess those who have to use the reason 'C' have little choice though. |

i know i am gonna get a ton of red on this, but i really dont know anything on any of this stuff and am trying to learn but reading through all of this just makes these finance threads more confusing. i just know the basics about charge cards, cds, bank accounts and checking accounts and am trying to learn but it looks like i need to take a few college finance courses to understand this foreign language you are talking. anyways would anyone be kind enough to tell me why you would want to overpay your charge account? |

Another avenue to consider is a BoFA card. The BofA NEA card has a $30 limit on BTs, and BofA transfered the BT funds into checking in 1 day! This works if you have a massive BofA line - scattered across many is not a problem because BofA personal BT department is very quick to do credit line juggling and then BT. So in summary: 1. Get a low max-fee BT 0% offer from BoFA, 2. Consolidate as much CL into that card as possible, 3. Take out a large BT, 4. Move funds from other cards into that card, 5. Possibly do step 3 again. I know every time you do step 3 costs $30 or whatever the max is, but is still an approach. P.S. I would not advise overpaying any BofA credit card, because I remember one thread where OP got in trouble for overpaying his BoFA card 4x the credit limit. Fraud department got involved quickly and they shut down all his BoFA accts: CC, Deposit, AU, and more. |

Great thread. My AOR with my plan to pull out a bunch of cash on an existing BT offer from Citi with $0 fee first, then send all BT at application requests to them, should go down this week. (Belatedly unfortunately) I have a 25K limit, if I can send 6x that much there, that would be awesome. LOL - I'm not sure I'll even get that much new credit. But I'm hoping. |

Not that your post is off topic (although talking Boa when I asked about citi technically is ) I am maxed at BoA for right now... I have over 60K in credit lines with them, and what you proposed is too risky for me.... and won't work for my AOR, as I need to use existing lines (such as citi) to BT the money into... and @chessycatlane No red for you from me.... it is confusing, but after a while you will get used to it... no degree necessary (I have non, nor do I work in finance). The reason to OVERPAY a credit line is to get the $$$$ refunded... It doesn't work with BoA (as noted above), but DOES work with Citi (the whole reason for this thread). I am going to attempt to SERIOUSLY overpay my citi card (by tens of thousands), then move the money into a HYS (High Yield Savings) account, and get between 5 to 6% on the money I borrowed (for 12 months or 15 months, at 0% interest). I may put it into the 7%, 7 month CD (you can find the thread by searching).... AOR in a very short time now, thanks to all for the data points (I should've trademarked it, EVERYONE is using "data Points" now....) and ChumChurum, thanks for the input.... even though I can't use it... |

Did 1 last month and it took only 1 week to receive the check. Did 1 this month and it took about 2 weeks to receive the check. Going over the CL does not appear to be an issue. It's done online and should get an email that is has been approved by the next business day. (It appears the online request makes its way into a standard customer service request.) What seems like the longest part for me is waiting for the float to clear! (Don't forget checks over 5K have an extra day of float.) I love getting this letter from them (as a check is attached!): Dear XXX Below is a refund check for the credit balance on your account. It is possible that the amount of the refund check differs from the credit balance shown on your last billing statement due to charges or credit received on your account after the statement was generated. If you have any questions concerning your account, please contact the Customer Service number located on your statement. We look forward to providing you with the best service possible. |
