M/A-COM Federal Credit Union (MFCU) has a new product, *Rewards* Checking with 6.00% APY:

Per CSR, effective November 7, 2007, a branch visit is required to open the Rewards Checking account.

Effective 5/1/2008, the cap was decreased to 10K.

"Account will earn 6.00% APY on balances between $10 and $10,000 when account requirements are met during the eligibility cycle (Eligibility Cycle starts on first day of each month and ends the last day of each month). Rates are accurate as of 05/01/2008."

Here are the conditions:
. 12 posted debit card transactions (excluding ATM'S).
. Receive monthly account statements electronically.
. At least one recurring ACH transaction or Bill Pay transaction per month.
. If these conditions are not met during the eligibility cycle, the account will earn 0.25% APY.
. Balances greater than $100,000 will earn 0.25% APY.
. Rates and terms are subject to change.

You can join the credit union by including a $5.00 donation to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) on a check in addition to the $25.00 minimum amount to open a savings account with MFCU. Total check amount = $30.00. Alternatively, you can join the Tewksbury Historical Society. See the membership eligibility page for complete eligibility requirements/options.

FW Discussion: Automatic $1.00 Monthly Donations To Qualify For Reward Offers

Additional information from phone call with CSR and other sources:

• Bankrate.com Star Rating: 3 - Performing

• Membership application must be printed, completed, and mailed to MFCU. Include copies of two forms of ID (e.g. drivers license and utility bill), and a check (minimum $30 if you want to join by contributing $5 to MADD, minimum $25 if you join by meeting some other eligibility requirement) to fund your savings account. Indicate on the application in the section that mentions the free checking account that you want the *Rewards Checking* account, and also include a check to fund the checking account. See below for another way to become a member of MFCU.

• You can also join Tewksbury Historical Society. Individual membership fee on on-line application form is $15, but the form has a 2005 date on it, so the fee might not be accurate. If you use this method to join the credit union, you'll need to include proof of your membership with THS with the application for MFCU membership.

• If you order checks on your membeship application, they're duplicate-style checks. The cost is $15.70 for a box of 150 checks. There are other check options, but you'd have to call MFCU in order to discuss them.

• You can also order checks from a third party. The format is standard: routing number, account number, check number.

• If you use an ACH transaction to satisfy 1 ACH or 1 "Bill Payer" (on-line bill pay) transaction per month, must be ACH debit.

• Bill Payer is free if you make at least 1 bill pay transaction every 3 months.

• No incoming wire transfer fee; outgoing wire transfer fee: $18 ($20 effective 11/1). Must make physical appearance at CU in order to initiate outgoing wire transfer.

• No capability to initiate ACH transfers. ACH transfers initiated from other institutions are fine, and there is no charge or limit by MFCU for pulling/pushing funds from/to MFCU. Alternatively, you can use MCFU's Bill Payer to move money from MFCU to other accounts, including bank accounts.

• Routing number for MFCU is 211381592.

• Cashiers checks (free now) will have a $2 fee effective 11/1.

• No hard credit inquiry when opening savings or checking account. Uses ChexSystems.

• No ATM surcharge rebates, but they apparently use the CO-OP Network. From the ATM locator website:
If the back of your ATM card carries the CO-OP Network logo, your credit union is a member of the largest credit union-only ATM network in the country. CO-OP Network membership provides surcharge-free access at 25,000 ATMs, which includes 6,000 deposit-taking and 5,500 7-Eleven locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

First bank to catch up on "micro deposits" and "micro debit-transactions."

Rates and terms are subject to change. I will take it with a grain of salt. FNBOD was awsome as it had guaranteed rate till end of sep 2007.

Edit: Looks like you can gain eligibility by joining this Tewksbury Historical Society. I have no idea what that is, but I can guarantee your $5 would be better spent preserving the history of Tewksbury.

Got anything against the Tewksbury Historical Society? It's another option.

I added the Tewksbury Historical Society link to the Quick Summary. Personally, I'd rather pay the $5 towards MADD than the $15 towards THS, but to each their own.

Sounds pretty good...though it does require 12 debit card transactions per month (instead of 10) and also doesn't mention anything about atm surcharge rebates....

if it doesn't have that, then the only free atm access you would have is with the Co-Op Network atms, so you would be more limited on where you could withdraw cash (if they had both Co-Op and Allpoint, it would be alot better, but they apparently do not)......

You're correct about no ATM rebates. I added that to the Quick Summary. I usually get my cash when I go grocery shopping, so the lack of ATMs doesn't bother me.

or if you're near a 7-11 store (lol) Thanks for the clarification and adding it to the quick summary!....i thought that was the case...

I just wanted to bring this point out, before everyone starts sending off their applications (assuming that the "rebates" factor is important to them)....

I wonder since I tempted for Kelly for a month when I was 19 whether that would count as being "retired"

Tnanks mh83 for the info and the bullet character. I used it to make the Quick Summary look nicer. On November 1, we can update the QS with some of the fee information you obtained.

MADD is very effective at fundraising. 86% of donations go toward fundraising, and they cook the books.

Please continue any further discussion, pro or con, of MADD in another thread. This topic is about the MFCU *Reward* Checking Account, and isn't the place to debate and discuss the merits of any charity. I think it would be fine to provide a link to the "charity discussion thread", but it shouldn't take up any more space here. Thanks!

I added information to the Quick Summary:

    - You can request the *Rewards Checking* Account on your MFCU membership application. Just include a separate check to fund the checking account.
    - If you wish to join the credit union by becoming a member of the Tewksbury Historical Society, you need to include proof of that membership with the MFCU application.
    - No MFCU-initiated ACH transactions.
    - ACH transactions initiated from other institutions are fine, and MFCU doesn't impose a fee or limits for them.
    - MFCU's routing number is 211381592.
    - Cashiers checks will have a $2 fee effective 11/1.
    - If you order checks as part of your application, they're duplicate-style checks. The cost is $15.70 for a box of 150 checks. There are other check options, but you'd have to call MFCU in order to discuss them.
    - You can also order checks from a third party. The format is standard: routing number, account number, check number.

just to clarify....although you would have access to all those atm networks nationally and internationally, only the atms that are in the Co-Op Network will be surcharge free (though as pointed out, there are 25,000 of them across the US, including at 7-11 Stores).....

I myself, prefer CU's that have both Co-Op and Allpoint, if they don't offer surcharge rebates, because then you have access to like more then double that amount (like about 60,000 atms)...but even having Co-Op is better then no free access, as it is is pretty extensive....
