I was at a local event today and Charter Bank was there giving out promo pamphlets for this new thing. They call it turbochecking, www.turbochecking.com and the rate is really good.
It Offers:

* 6.01% APY* on balances to $25,000
* 1.01% APY* on balances above $25,000
* .25% APY* if requirements are not met
* No ATM Fees Nationwide
* Overdraft Privilege
* Free Online Bill Pay

The Requirements Are:

* Make at least 10 debit card transactions monthly (excluding ATM transactions)
* Receive one direct deposit or ACH auto debit monthly
* Receive your monthly statement electronically (e-statement)
* Access on-line banking at least once a month

There is no minimum balance, no monthly charge, and you need $100 to get the account opened. I'm not a debit card user so I'd have a tough time meeting the 10 transactions, but the no ATM fees is pretty nice.
I'll probably add this info to the ongoing thread on high rate savings accounts as well...
Brian

Available online or in branch registration only?

They have an on-line form, looks to be nationwide.

Yep they claim all you need to sign up is an email address and $100. I thought it was a good deal because it matches the top rewards checking accounts APY's but has the least requirements I've seen and Charter is a nationwide bank.

If someone signs up, let us know how the process goes!

Thanks for adding this to the Reward Checking Accounts - Available to All Thread. With the recent interest rate drop, it might be nice to have a variety of these accounts, in case the rate on some drop and others don't.

They claim you can use ATMs at any Wells Fargo bank branches (except in California)

For deposits??

Can you link external accounts online?

the customary question:

what about HARD PULL??

The above three posts have some good questions. I don't know the answers and I encourage the posters to call or e-mail Charter, get the answers to those questions, edit the Quick Summary part of this thread to add the answers, and post a separate message in the thread indicating the details on what was put in the Quick Summary. Definitely worth "green" (rating, not cash)!

Personally, I think these accounts are terrific and make an excellent primary checking account, after all, checking accounts are typically paying an abysmal rate of return. The fact that the rate is "only" paid on $25,000 would not ordinarily be a hindrance since I never keep that much money in an ordinary checking account. However, given that State Bank of Toledo is paying the higher rate on unlimited balances, were I opening a new reward checking account, I'd do it with them instead. After all, I have no qualms about keeping more than $25,000 in a checking account at these rates!

The requirements are a bit stringent. Especially 10 debit transactions each month. I don't like to use debit transactions that much as 1) less safety compared to a credit card in terms of chargebacks & 2) unnecessary hold @ gas station transactions and other places.

If you have larger amounts in the account, more risky using your debit card & pin all over the place and if you have small amounts, it is just not worth the hassle

One man's view. Then again, if you have $100,000 in the account that comes to over $80/month for every 1% in yield above what you are otherwise earning on your money. I've had my reward account for 4 months and have yet to use a pin other than at the atm machine. And I've never once had to get a chargeback on my lunch or breakfast orders.

You must be well-nourished! LOL --- I have seen your posts about Toledo Bank (thanks) and think I will open an account with them too. Wish I still worked to buy my meals --- my husband and I both are retired and we stay home and cook(he actually does most of the cooking!)

Thanks op for info about Charter -- DavidSubadiver has been very enthusiastic about Toledo, I think I will put my money there. Interesting to see over time how the rates on both Toledo and Charter compare to others. Hope they stay at 6%. Best deal I see to date.

How are deposits handled?

Assuming you don't have access to an ATM that would accept deposits for Charter Bank, you have several possibilities:
1. Mail them the deposit.
2. Deposit it into another one of your checking accounts, and either (depending on available services, fees, and limits on amounts):
A. Using that other bank's bill pay system, Make Charter Bank a Payee (using your Charter account number of course!) and pay them.
B. Make an ACH transaction from your other checking account to your Charter checking account.
C. Wire the money from that other checking account to your Charter checking account.

It says "10 debit card transactions". So, I assume you can still use "credit" option.

i read on a blog that this account is only available to those in New Mexico, even though the online application gives the impression that it is open to everywhere....anyone who is interested in this account should contact them and check....

Looks like it's not nationwide after all: Bank Deals Post About Charter Bank Reward Checking Account. According to Banking Guy when he called their toll-free number, he was told a branch visit was required in order to complete the application. I PM'ed Firedrake to ask him, assuming the bank is local to him, if he could confirm this.

oh, yes, that's right...that's where i read it (had just forgotten the name)......

I just called a CSR on the toll-free number and she said it's not necessary to make a branch visit. You can simply mail them a copy of your driver's license with the signed signature card. I'll leave Charter Bank in the Reward Checking Accounts Paying at least 6% APY (Available to All) Thread. I also posted this on Bank Deals, so we'll see if Banking Guy can confirm what the correct information really is.

I called yet again and confirmed a visit was unnecessary, and saw the same thing on Bank Deals, so the account is for sure nationally available, at least for now!

I gave charter a call to ask few questions. Here is what I got out of her:

* Soft pull. She said they use transunion to do a check system.
* Any kind of automatic bill pay (utilities, mortgage, CC) will satisfy the one auto ACH debit

The CSR this morning told me they use ChexSystems and they don't do a hard credit inquiry. This is sort of what you're saying ("check system" = ChexSystems).

Has anyone actually signed up for this account? This one seems pretty good (soft pull), and considering SBoT is lowering its rates I'm considering this. Is it easy to link up other banks for ACH transfers with this bank?

Charter Bank (as well some other possibilities) looks nice, but it's highly unlikely that I'll do anything until the first of the year. By that time, I hope we'll see the aftermath of the FOMC 12/11 meeting and its possible further rate decrease. And I hope we'll know the details of the seemingly certain SBoT rate drop. Sorry, I haven't had any actual experience with Charter Bank.

How is the banking online interface? Something like ING or emmigrants interface would be nice.

Wow! Recieved an email from Customer service along with a call with in 5 minutes. Basically I have to get my Driver license notarized.

If account is closed with in 90 days there is a charge of $10.00
Lost Debit card charge of $5.00

Folks,

I know this might be a sideline, but I feel it is on-topic.

For your Notories and Deposits for these sort of out-of-state checking accounts...open a free Washington Mutual account in your state( if available).

You will get free Notories and outgoing wires there....after they get to know you they will remove their extremely long and strict hold times on your deposits, enabling you to make a deposit and immediatley wire it to your interest earning account (make sure your incoming wires do not have a fee at the interest-earning bank!).

Any updates?

I haven't seen an update here regarding whether it is open to those outside the local area since Nov, so I tried signing up online. That part went fine, so I'm waiting for the snail mail package. I'll keep everyone posted. So far I've noticed a credit check in TransUnion only (not Equifax and not Experian).

Its definately open to all. Make sure you fund with the minimum deposit. It takes about 2 weeks to get the check cards. I should have mines any day now.

Is it ok to trust this bank? They only have locations in NM? Has anyone had experience with them?

Its FDIC insured . Charter Bank (FDIC Cert: 32498) So hopefully they are legit. Make sure you read the terms and conditions. It takes a good 3 weeks to get the account up and running.

Not sure about the soft pull, since they offer an overdraft account, and this means credit.
I haven't gone through the application process, can you opt out of the overdraft account?

According to this Bank Deals post, Charter Bank uses ChexSystems only, so there is no hard pull. Still, nothing is certain, and it's probably best to ask them.

Is their bill pay interface CheckFree? If not, I'll stick with SBoT.

They have a free bill pay service, But I don't use it.

I took the plunge and opened an account yesterday (subject to approval, additional paperwork yadda yadda yadda). Primarily, I did not wish to pay a $50.00 membership fee to join the credit union because I am not all that confident the higher cap on that account would stay in place long enough for me to recoup my investment (that, and I am content with having $25,000 of my own money in a checking account now that my 0% offers seem to have dried up and gone away). Heck, I don't recall ever having 25k in cash of my own money that did not get dumped right into the stock market!

From Charter's Funds Availability Disclosure statement:

In addition, funds you deposit by check may be delayed for a longer period under the
following circumstances:
....
- You deposit checks totaling more than $5,000.00 on any one day.
....

We will notify you if we delay your ability to withdraw funds for any of these reasons,
and we will tell you when the funds will be available. They will generally be available no
later than the 11 business day after the day of your deposit.

Doesn't that limit/delay seem excessive?

Unfortunately, it's not excessive per existing regulations. Of course, interest will start accruing even while the funds are on hold, usually upon collection of the funds from the issuing bank. See the Wikipedia Article - Expedited Funds Availability Act for information about hold times.
