SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 18 (Reuters) - PayPal, the payments service arm of online auction leader eBay Inc, is set to release on Tuesday a convenient way for its customers to make payments on Web sites that don't accept PayPal directly.

The new software utility, called the PayPal Secure Card, recognizes when a user lands on an e-commerce checkout page and automatically helps the user fill out the payment form in a secure way that also offers stepped-up fraud protections.

It answers an innovation by Google Inc, which a year ago introduced Google Checkout, which stores financial details to make shopping more convenient, analysts said.

Through a partnership with credit card issuer MasterCard Inc, Secure Card generates a unique MasterCard number each time a PayPal user arrives on an e-commerce sales checkout page that does not otherwise accept its payments.

Anyone know if you can set a dollar limit or expiry date? I assume you must, or else this would be useless.

I signed up for the Beta program, and they let me upgrade to the new service this weekend.

There was very little flexibility with the Beta card, and they have not changed much.

You can generate a single use or a multiple use card. For the single use card, the
default expiration is one month. The help info says you can change this to two months.

There doesn't seem to be a way to set a specific limit for each card number you generate.

The beginning daily limit is $1000. On one if the settings page it says call to raise it.
The primary funding source is your paypal account, and it seems this can not be changed.
The secondary funding source comes from your paypal settings. You can change this to any
of the sources already associated with the paypal account. Or you can use a hot link to add
a bank account.

I have to admit that I didn't look at the terms when I signed up for the beta card, and the
upgrade process didn't give me a chance to check it out. I am not sure what protections
there are beyond what you can usually expect from paypal.

One last thing. The beta program would only work with Internet Explorer. When I did the upgrade
it looked to see what my default browser was and installed in Firefox.

EDIT:

You generate a virtual Mastercard number with/from your paypal account. As I said
above I am not sure about the terms and conditions.

Can you generate a one time number with any Mastercard, even a virtual Mastercard?

does this paypal plug in browser add-on hog more memory resources on the pc?
is it always loaded? Do you need it as an addon on your browser or can you just create the virtual # on their website?

I see now, so if your PayPal balance is $0, it funds from the secondary source which can be any credit card not just a MasterCard, I hope I got that right, thanks for your detailed post.

It doesn't seem to use a lot of resources.

The beta system had an icon in the system tray that could be used
to shut it down, but this is missing from the new system. I have not
tried to shut it down or to take it out of system startup.

I am not sure about your last question. It seems that you have to have
the browser component to use the system. You can create virtual numbers
from the menu on the browser component or from the web page. It might
be interesting to see if you could sign up and then uninstall the
browser stuff, but I don't know if this would break it.

PayPal had a completely browser-based implementation of Virtual MasterCard numbers linked to PP balance years and years ago - before eBay bought them. Then, they got rid of it. Now, it's a new feature?

I'm glad to see it back, but I hope it soon becomes Firefox/Mac compatible rather than Windows-only.

That would be funny if it worked.

Using a virtual mastercard from Citi to create another virtual mastercard through paypal and then you could use that paypal generated number for Google checkout and you get maximum protection.

Does this mean I can effectively use my AMEX at online sites that only take Visa/MC?

Paypal allows you to fund your account with AMEX, so you should be able to set your
AMEX card as the secondary source for the virtual MC.

You can run two software firewalls in windows at the same time, but it may create
unanticipated problems, and is not advised.

I doubt that paypal would let you fund an account with a virtual MC and
then generate a single use MC number with the Paypal plug-in,
unless you are on double secret probation.

You can only select checking accounts as backup funding sources.
