Worst purchases: 200 shares of Gemstar in mid-2000 at $80 a share. My dad really pressured me to put my college fund into this, insisting that their Rocket eBook would take off. Turns out the price was artificailly inflated because Murdoch was doing a hostile takeover, and my $16000 was worth $520 by the time I graduated High School in 2002 (a 97% loss). Fortunately my dad took responsibility for having me buy the stock and paid that part of my tuition out of his HELOC. The stock was up to $6 a share recently (only a 93% loss), but yesterday it fell 20% because they announce a buyout by Macrovision. I'm just waiting for my income taxes to be high enough to justify selling and writing off the loss. $500 in new computer parts. After a series of power problems in my house, my power supply died. I replaced it, but afterwards found that one of my hard drives was no longer recognized. I bought a new $50 hard drive, and the motherboard still didn't recognize it, so I figured the IDE controller on the mobo was toast. Figuring it was time to upgrade, I bought a new $120 motherboard, a $100 C2D processor, a $30 heatsink (stock one was too loud), $100 of RAM (my old ram was DDR, mobo needed DDR2), and a $100 video card (old one was AGP, mobo needed PCI-e). When I finally assembled everything, the second hard drive still didn't work. It turned out that the IDE cable was bad because I had to unplug it when swapping power supplies and probably stressed the connector. I could've fixed the problem for $0.25 if I had thought to test the cable. Yes, I can now rip DVDs in 1/4 the time, but my old system worked perfectly fine for the stuff I do. |

A laptop right before taking a new job. A few days after I started they bought me a laptop that was 3 times faster and better and I haven't used mine since. That was 1.5 years ago and now it's worth about $200. |

$800 dollar gym membership, Never went and 2 years later I'm 20lbs heavier. $700 "Fixer upper" Geo Tracker ended up not having the time to touch it due to changes in work and gave it to a friend. $3,000 Avon, My wife demanded I let her try to make money while I was in college, A year later she was no longer intrested and I had a bill in my hands for $3,000 in stuff she had kept for herself. $2,200 62" Toshiba HDTV, worth $900 now and I should have gotten a friggin flat panel. All that is peanuts compared to What I have saved or even made since I have found FWF. |

COMP NERD ALTER: The first time I went SCSI hard drives instead of SATA. I've burned up probably 15 consumer grade SATA/IDE hard drives in the past 7 years. Finally decided to go SCSI, do to the much greater mean time between failures and the low cost of refurb, warrantied 15k RPM u320 drives. Huge, HUGE pain in the rear. Went through 3 controllers before I found a good one that worked and was compatible with my MoBo. Here are some of the revelations that happened: -PCI-X isn't PCI-express? -What the hell is a terminator? -But I like my terminators to be passive! - LVD? - SCSI-3, SCSI-III vs SCSI-320? Backplate adapter? SAS, 68, 80, 54pin?! Anyway all the ordering and re-ordering took over a month and it ended up costing (after reselling unneeded parts) more than a 3 WD Raptors, which I could have set up in about 5 mins. On the plus side, I've been running 3x 15k u320 Fujitsu MAU in a RAID 0 (+1 onto SATAs) for over a year now with no problems. Amazingly fast and more reliable than anything consumer grade. Highly recommended, but do a ton of research before hand, or you'll end up getting burned again and again like I did. Also, get a silent Antec case as they scream almost as loud as Raptors. |

My worst purchase was to buy a used Subaru Forester for 16,500 for my wife right after she graduated from college, in the hope that she will work and we could afford it. Fast forward five years, she hasn’t earned more than $300 is last five years combined, still drives the forester. I am still paying her student loan. We have only one income. My next car will be a small used car for around $5,000 - $10,000. |
